My fiance and I have decided to elope in Scotland with only our closest family and friends to celebrate with us (probably 12 people in all).
We are in need of some advice and guidance. We are going to be planning everything completely remotely from New York City to be able maximize our vacation time that we can use for the wedding and honeymoon. We love the idea of being able to be married in or outside a castle with some spectacular rugged scenery outdoors for a ceremony and photos. After the ceremony we would love to be able to have a small private reception with a seated dinner and cake. By the way, the ceremony would be completely ceremonial. We will be legally married beforehand in NY.
Does anyone have any advice on possible venues? What time of the year would be best to really enjoy the scenery? Also, if anyone has a local wedding planner they could recommend it would be very helpful!
Thanks in advance for all the help :]

@mad815: I’ve never been to the countryside in Scotland, only Glasgow. I would say try the Summer as it can’t half rain there.

@mad815: You honestly, honestly cannot predict the weather in the UK EVERRRR. Last year April and May were GORGEOUS, June and the first half of July were OK. August was awful and it didn’t get better until the middle of September for a month….. UK weather is a nightmare. So if it was me, I’d be looking at May or June to hopefully get the best of the weather. And while you can’t go wrong with rural Scotland, can I just suggest you research the heck out of transfers from the airport to the potenital destination. Because our roads are really small…. so while it may not look far on GoogleEarth it’s probably longer than you think

What do you mean by local Scottish planner? You can’t have local for a country.
What part of Scotland are you thinking of ?
What sort of ceremony are you thinking of (I know not legal one but type)?

@mad815: I’m Scottish and PP are right it’s a big country so you need to maybe narrow down the area you would like, before anyone can give recommendations for a wedding planner. As others have said the weather can be unpredictable at best altthough Jul/Aug/Sep as usually your best bets for getting at least some sunshine. There are some gorgeous castle locations though that can be used for weddings, have a look at the below for a few ideas.
The bottom 2 are both obviously near the capital city of Edinburgh and Balgonie Castle is in Fife on the east coast so about a 40 min drive from the capital.
It’s worth mentioning that Edinburgh hosts a festival during August which is fantastic but means more expensive hotel rooms and a necessity to book quite far in advance.
Also the Commonwealth Games 2014 are being held in Glasgow (on the west coast) 23 Jul – 03 Aug 14 which I’m sure will bring a lot of visitors to the surrounding areas.
If I can be of anymore help just give me a shout as I love Scotland and am massively proud to come from such a beautiful country.
