Hi bees. I’m getting a bit confused here and thought maybe you could chime in and give some opinions/advice… I’m getting married in August and the more I plan the more confused I get about what I want my wedding to be like!!
I’ve never in my life dreamed about a wedding. I always wanted to get married but never really thought about it much and definitely did not think about what style of wedding I would have, what I would wear, etc. Living in NY and SF not a lot of people have gotten married over the years. Even though I’m 38 now, most of my friends are still single and the odd few who got married are mostly divorced, with a few exceptions. So I haven’t been exposed to too many weddings, and the ones I’ve been too I mostly hated and had a terrible time. (on a side note, I think that’s because I had a food allergy I didn’t know about, so I was really bloated and uncomfortable at the weddings I went to!)
Anyways. We got engaged in December (yay!) and now I am planning. We were just going to have a courthouse wedding and then two picnics (east and west coast); originally planned as potlucks, similar to two of our other sets of friends who got married a couple years ago. But now as we plan, one of the ‘picnics’ will be catered and in the garden of a historic house; the other is at a restaurant with a big deck and lawn. as for ceremonies, now we might have a friend do the ceremony at the first one, and my uncle do a religious blessing (not legal) at the second.
ok, i’m ok with all this. feeling good… it’s a bit more formal and traditional, but still feels ‘me’.
so now for the dress part. my original instinct was a tea length 50s style. i’m a former goth girl so go for that alternative style, even though i dress pretty basic for work these days. i still have my flare! 😉 so i went to dolly couture in LA and picked out a dress; i’m getting it custom with a champagne (pink-ish) silk, with a sheer ivory polka dot overlay; sweetheart neckline with sheer ivory polka dot off-the shoulder sleeve thingies. a black sash and black petticoats… a custom length a little longer and an a-line skirt which will flatter my figure better. it’s all picked out. it’s all decided…. if i order now it will be here in 6 to 12 weeks, with enough time to get altered for the weddings in august.
but i’m having trouble pulling the trigger!! i keep seeing photos of long wedding dresses on the internet – the ones you guys have all picked out, the ones that pop up on my browser because the internet knows i’m getting married. they’re all so pretty and long and etheral… isn’t that what i’m supposed to get? is that what my fiance will want to see me in? is my dress too cutesy? and not elegant/romantic enough? …wouldn’t i look dumb in a long dress because i am tall (5’10”) with a small-ish head (it’s not that bad, but still)? and if at the second party i want to play croquet and badminton with the guests, wouldn’t a short dress be more appropriate?
my coworker and a couple friends say go for the one i picked out – the polka dots are very me, my fiance (when i told him i was dress shopping) asked if i was getting a pink dress, it has black in it as a nod to my goth years… but is it two cutesy??
what do you think?
i don’t really want to post pics of me, but check out these websites for the style:
although i’m hoping the skirt will be more like this
