Went and met with the Florist and the Baker. Ordered our 3 tier, buttercream icing with vanilla and red velvet layers, cascading purple, lavender and orange flowers… so I am super pumped about that! Here is an inspiration pic to show y’all..
we will have flowers cascading down the side in the wedding colors:
So if those two cakes had a baby it would be my wedding cake!
A couple of things I took away from the cake experience:
1- Buttercream is always going to be less exspensive than fondant ( duh), BUT, bakers may be willing to make a fondant like cake ( think square tiers), with buttercream icing and not charge you as much since the corners will not have to be perfect
2- You will more than likely be charged with a fee for them to deliver it. No real way around this one, so adding it into the budget may make it easier for you. Hey, if they dont charge it … less you have to pay!
3- Let them know what type of budget you have to work with up front, because the “piping”, icing, cake size, type of cake, etc will make the price just increase on top of what their base price already is. If you’re not dead set on one thing, entertain the idea of switching icing up or doing without filling to help cut corners
Also met with the florist and ordered all of our flowers, bouts…. everything! Here is my inspiratation pic on that one:
Here is my advice to anyone ( like me, who doesn’t know much about flowers) who is interested. My florist gave me great suggestions:
1- have flowers in a “color group” so that it gives them more to work with and can potentially get you a flower in your color for less than another stem you might have had in mind
2- use the bridesmaids arrangements as added decor after the ceremony — this is a pretty “duh” type of thing, but she gave some suggestions I wouldn’t have thought of like: at the bar, next to the card box, guest book, etc…
3- you can contribute: my florist is really willing to work with me adding ribbons, burlap, twine, etc… to add my own touches as long as I provide them to her. She also has offered to arrange the flowers on my cake if I do not want the bakery to use silk flowers, so asking them may not hurt and save some $$ in the long run!
4- Tell them your buget up front. Instead of wasting their time and mine, I told her over the phone, ” I have $$$ amount to work with, can we make that happen?” and she told me yes, she could. So, before you make your appt and if you are doing this like me and not making it a priority, I would be very honest with them up front.
hope this helps other brides out there going through the same process!
