There are so many beautiful girls names out there. I do love Scarlett but I think it would be a little odd using it now as it’s the dogs name. Middle name would probably be ok!

According to the baby name wizard, the sister names for Scarlett are :

  • Amber
  • Ava
  • Chloe
  • Elizabeth
  • Harper
  • Imogen
  • Isabella
  • Juliet
  • Lily
  • Molly
  • Natalie
  • Olivia
  • Ruby
  • Savannah
  • Sophia
  • Stella
  • Violet

And just for good measure, the brother names

  • Hudson
  • Jack
  • Hunter
  • Jackson
  • Luke
  • Noah
  • Samuel
  • Sawyer

Maybe one of those will speak to you, since they are the complimentary names to the one you love.

nutMeg13:  Could you change the dog’s name? She’d learn her new name pretty fast, I think. We’ve adopted several dogs where we didn’t know their previous name, and it always worked out fine. When we adopted our greyhound his racing name was Talc’s Falcon. Yeah, no. We changed it was never a problem!

Personally I would change the dog’s name. If you really love the name than use it for the baby.  The dog isn’t going to care.

nutMeg13:  When my friend was pregnant they could’nt think of boy names and I suggested August, nickname Gus. Then I felt like dumb because I’d forgotten their dog’s name was Gus, and I told my friend that. My friend was like, “we actually LOVE the name Gus, and we could always change the dog’s name- he’s a versatile creature.” I thought that was pretty funny. Yeah, it’d be weird, but if you changed the name now people would adjust. If you love the name that much I’d sure consider it!

PS My friend ended up having a baby girl whom they named Anja, so the dog is still Gus!

nutMeg13:  I totally feel your pain. My absolute favourite girl’s name is Luna, but we stupidly named our rat (yes our pet rat) Luna. My thought is, use it as a middle name. My brother’s name is Zachary, after my mother’s cat, but the cat had already died before my brother was born, so it was a bit different.

nutMeg13:  If you are super set on it, then like PPs said you could change the dogs name (we did it with a dog when I was little.. 3 times! he was fine and learnt really quickly!). Dogs and cats don’t actually learn their ‘name’ as such but the sound of the name, they’ll essentially register anything with a similar sound as being their name.

Its maybe not ideal but I’d be really devestated if I couldn’t use my favorite names too!

crookedframe:  Off the subject, but your Mom sound’s like a woman after my own heart, naming her baby after the cat, LOL. That is totally something I would do!

If I were you I’d change the dog’s name to “Carlette” or “Scar” and name my child whatever I want. It will be a fun story to tell your baby. Plus, let’s face it, your child will probably outlive your pup.

If not I’d just name the baby Scarlett and tell people “Yeah we named her after our doggy!” then laugh and tell the story of how you adopted the dog, etc. People will get it. It’s endearing : )
