I'm meeting with a DJ tonight and could really use some advice! Thanks!
I was in the same boat as you - totally confused about who to pick and how to decide. What I did was emailed a few that made my short list to get an idea of how they did their pricing, etc. Those that communicated well via email (where responsive to my questions), I set up appointments to meet. Things that impressed me (post-meeting) was professionalism, experience and willingness to work with us. Punctuality, proximity to location, backup plan, ethos of music playing, etc all played into my decision. After meeting with them, do some searching on line for reviews - that also helped me make my decision. And, definitely meet with more than one. We ended up meeting with two - and picked from between them. I would have liked to have met with one more, but it didn't work that way. It will become more clear after you meet!!

So how do you pick a dj? Obviously I'll be looking at all the boards for Chicago DJs, and read reviews on other websites, and price is always a factor, but once I have a list of people to meet with how do you pick? For venues you can go walk around or taste the food, for photographers we oggled page after page of their work and got a sense of what they wanted to capture in our day. But with DJs, unless we actually go to a wedding they've worked, then how can we get a sense of their style? And of course, we'll be giving them a "do play" and "don't play" list, so they know that we don't want a night full of Miley Cyrus or Nordic Death Metal (nothing against either if that's your thing!)
I'm just nervous because we've been to weddings with some pretty questionable djs - one time everyone was rocking out to the Cha Cha Slide, and the dj stopped the music to inform all of us that we were doing it wrong, and needed to be corrected. Killed the dancing mood for a solid half hour. Anyway, the point is I know that a good dj can make or break a wedding, but I don't have a good sense of how to make sure I find one... How did you choose your dj?
