I made DH take his car, car seat installed, to the local police or fire station to have it inspected.  I thought the hospital needed to check before letting you go, but they didn’t (well, they look to make sure there’s a car seat in there, but they didn’t look to see if it had been properly installed).

We have the system with the snap-n-go base, so the carrier also snaps into the stroller (yay for not waking sleeping babies!)

…however, I have a hard time now that she’s a little older/heavier reaching the carrier all the way up and over the base in the middle of the back seat.  It’s just too heavy and awkward.

So, I usually buckle her seat into the middle of my back seat with the seat belt and I don’t use the base anymore.

@DaneLady:  +1

You CAN do a “class” for free at either the police station or fire station, they will inspect your car seat and installation for you.

@urchin:  The best piece of advice is to install your carseat then take it to a certified technician (I believe every police station and fire station should have one) to get it inspected.  They hold monthly car seat inspections in various locations where I live. We will definitely be going to have ours checked out when the time nears.

@urchin:  I think it would have been very helpful if in one of our baby-prep classes they went over proper car seat installation as well!  I know the laws vary internationally because the car seat straps/harness/whatever-ma-jiggies are different as well.

Haha, I once babysat for a family who kept two carseats, because “We got it in the car. We can’t get it back out until (their son) is done with it. We’ll never get it to work again!”

My DH works with cars, and I worked with infants! We got our carseat in the mail, looked at it, and immediately went “So, police station?”

the police station around here will install them for you. either the police or the fire station, i can’t remember. or maybe both do it. i can’t remember. i just know that one or the other or both install carseats for you.

we won’t move carseats around. if we have two cars? we’ll have two carseats. it’s just not safe to move them around between cars.

as for coats and clothing, i will keep my comments to myself. because i will get flamed.

These were helpful visual aids in determining if I had the straps on correctly.
