I have had the worst luck now buying online. I tried the custom bolero, huge fail. Tried a petticoat.. the bolero person in China offered a petticoat to replace the crappy bolero, and showed me a pic of what they’d send and it looked awesome. Well it came and was NOT what they promised. When I asked they said they couldn’t find the one promised so sent another instead, way too narrow and not at all what I need. Arrgh!!
So that’s been handled and I got a refund but still, arrrgh!
Bought a traditional lace up corset off ebay: too small, even though I followed size chart to the letter. Getting a larger one but who knows when it will come.
I also tried a merry widow / bustier from another company, and it was way too big (38C). Sent it back for a refund and started scouring ebay, got a longline seamless strapless bra, in a 38C. Came yesterday and it is RIDICULOUSLY small! Like a 32 or something!
I really want a bra AND the corset, so I still need a bra.
I give up. I am going to hit the brick & mortar stores. I won’t buy online unless I’ve tried it on first. I know that whatever they put me in at David’s Bridal was okay, I guess I could go back there and try them on again? I wonder if they keep a record of that when you are there to try on dresses?
I’m just so frustrated with the bra thing. I need something with a lot of support, and some waist – cinching effect as well. I really do NOT want to drop $75 for it though if I can help it.
Thoughts on good bras I can find in local stores / department stores / etc?
Thoughts on how to know, without dragging my dress around town, if the bra is going to WORK well under the dress?

@MsInterpret: No ideas on where to buy them other than Davids Bridal or even Frederick’s of Hollywood, but I would purchase whatever I was interested in, take it home and try it with the dress and return it if it didnt work. Most department stores allow you to do that…just make sure before you buy it.

@kate169: LOL yes, I can’t believe I didn’t think of that. I am sooo used to buying online where returning it is a huge pain in the butt!
Thanks. I called David’s Bridal to see if they kept a record of what bra size I was, when I was in there trying on. Since I didn’t buy my dress from them they don’t seem thrilled to help and told me they didn’t record it. Darn.

Seriously, I’d just go to David’s. I tried on a corset there that had a bra thing built in and it sucked my fat rolls in and gave my tiny breasts some lift–it gave me a smooth sillouette.

@MsInterpret: maybe you could pretend shop for your dress and get another measurement?

Will Victoria’s Secret have something like what you’re looking for? (I’m not American, can you tell? Ahem). I’d also definitely look to get a fitting done before you shop – sometimes just a fitting can work wonders on your shape if you’re wearing the wrong size.

I have a corset bra type thing I bought at Dillard’s that works well. I’d assume other dept stores would have similar items. And I love, love, love the fit and support of Victoria’s Secret bras, but I don’t know if they have the type you’re looking for. I’d hit the mall and check places out!

@littlemissmoo: I never have good luck with them because I’m pretty busty. Victoria’s secret goes up to bigger sizes now but in my experience it’s still less than ideal. I can try them again though, admittedly I swore them off years ago becuase they always had flimsy straps.
The thing is, I was fitted within the past 2 months so I was going on that info.
@helenberrycrunch: Maybe I should do that! I could always just make another appointment.
@beekiss2: Yeah, whatever I tried on there originally with my dress made enough difference that without it my dress is struggling a bit to zip up but WITH it it zipped up easily! 🙁 I was just annoyed; with the way they wrote everything down and asked a million questions I figured they’d write down the bra size I tried!
I want something I can hopefully use after the wedding for dresses I have that have skinny straps or are strapless… so i want it to suck in my waist/gut some.

You want an underbust corset and a bra? Giligan & O’Malley bras are a good quality for the price at Target. As for a corset, you will have to buy that online. I dont know of anywhere to buy real corsets at a brick and mortar store. Corsets are such a specialty made item. I am ordering mine from absolutecorsets.com. Yeah if you dont buy a dress from a bridal store they usually dont want to help you out much. VS is the only other bra place I can think of.

Have you tried figleaves.com or bravissimo? I know you said you didn’t want to buy online but I know at least Bravissimo have customer reviews for their bras so you know in advance if the corset runs a bit large or small!
Hmm. Maybe the sellers have just been a bit awful then!

@gulbraa44: Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I already have the corset part covered but not sure if I want to wear it all day for the wedding, so I want a longline bra / bustier / shaper thing too, in case I change my mind.
Didn’t know Target had them.. I really want one that comes down to the top of the hips if possible.
@littlemissmoo: I’d be okay with it if I could find a site that offers free return shipping or whatever, like the shoe sites do! I just need to stay off ebay for this purchase at least! 😉 I got a really good deal on one before from Orchard Corset, it was a longline strapless “merry widow” type but I didn’t realize until I got it that it only had one row of hook & eyes and therefore wasn’t very adjustable at all and it ran big. So, I sent it back, but didn’t order another because I had to pay return shipping and couldn’t imagine doing that 3 or 4 times to get the right fit, you know? I called customer service and they didn’t help much as far as figuring out my size, so I just blew that one off.

I’m pretty sure that figleaves do free returns! A search for “merry widow” turned up some… interesting items but you might have some luck there.

I’ve been told that Nordstroms has a great selection of bras and lingerie in lots of sizes. I’ve also had lots of personal luck with Fredrick’s of Hollywood, especially in the larger sizes which I appreciate. 🙂 And since FOH is very umm…lingerey, I think they have a lot of different types of items.

I got mine at David’s Bridal online. I knew I needed a long line. I also wanted to make sure it was long enough so it didn’t push my pudge into the middle of my midriff, the way many LL do. It’s a Dominique. This brand is available on several websites but their sizing is weird. I tried it on in a DB store for size. They only carried it in white in the store so I ordered off their website in ivory. If you do order from the website, make sure you try it on in a store first. Like I said, their sizing is off.
I didn’t want to pay that much but I looked at: Nordstrom, Macys, JCPenney, Saks Fifth Avenue, Intimacy. This was my best option.
