I have been using Amazon cheepies OPK’s  for so many months and while I seem to get a spike some days I can't tell if it's a true positive.

DH and I are getting super frustrated with this whole TTC thing.

I have super normal cycles.  We have been timing everything with the calendar and the OPK’s for months and nothing. I think I ovulate (I get ovulation pain)

Last month we started using pre-seed, and this cycle I am ready to chart, use the  clear blue easy fertility monitor (as well as the cheep Amazon ones) and take extra B vitamins just in case I have a progesterone defect.

(I suspect I do because I spot about a week before my period -- let me tell you that is so frustrating because it happens right when implantation bleeding would happen)

    Something has got to give.

Is anyone using (or have used) one of these monitors? Do you like it?  Was it worth the $200?

There is another thread that you may find helpful.  I liked using the monitor to double-check what my chart was telling me.

I'm a fan, I can't attribute it to being our only reason for success, but we got a BFP our third month of using it (and no luck the seven months prior even with charting) so I can't complain!

I was slightly disappointed with only a thing or two- it was pretty automatic once you hit a low, you stop using the sticks and the month runs on automatic until you hit the "m" button.

It was a good double check for my charting and while expensive, gave me peace of mind that I wasn't missing anything.  It locks you into a certain time window every day, I just liked how it saved information as opposed to individual sticks guessing if you are gearing up to O or not.  It definitely picked up subtle changes in my cycle, so ovulation is definitely not expected only on CD 14.

@panterapeach: I know this isn't your question, but since you mentioned the spotting.... If you consistently start spotting about a week into your LP that turns into your period, you may have a luteal phase deficiency and need actual progesterone supplements to correct vs. just B vitamins.  Or does the spotting go away again for a week before your period arrives?  If it turns into your period, it might not be allowing enough time for implantation, and you may want to talk to a doctor sooner rather than later.

My 10-11 day LP with a day of spotting prior was the biggest red flag my RE found at my first visit, indicating low progesterone.  She put me on progesterone suppositories starting a few days after O that have lengthened my LP out to 16-18 days.  Feel free to ignore me, but just wanted to give you a heads up in case it might help :)

@lemondrop: Im hoping this will help clear my O day up.  I usually get a fade in pattern on the sticks and its so hard for me to tell a true positive.

@MerryC: oh thank you so much for your post.  I am so confused with this spotting.  It usually happens about 7 days before my actual period and typically only lasts for about a day or so.  (this might be tmi, but sometimes it's more sometimes it's less)

I'm seriously concerned that it might be a progesterone defect.  Can I see a RE even if we have only been trying half a year or so?

I've been using it for 5 months now.  I really like it because I feel like it tells me things are working!  I've gotten a peak every cycle although the first two were super late in the cycle.  A few pieces of advice:

    1) there is a shiny side and a rough side to the pee stick.  If you pee on the shiny side, you will get a misread.  (Figured this out after 3 in a row.)

Hmm...thought I had another, but I guess I don't.  I hope it helps.  My doctor said that it doesn't guarantee everything it says it does.  But it definitely gives me piece of mind.

Are you charting too? I didn't start until 3 months ago, but it is AMAZING.  I cannot overstate how much it has helped me understand what is going on and actually lessened the stress.

@Mrs Green Grass: I am not charting, but I will start this month.

You start charting on CD1 right?

@panterapeach: My first month charting I was halfway through the month, and it still picked up my Ovulation and the temperatures after.  So as long as you haven't ovulated yet, I don't see why you can't start now.

As for the monitor, I DON'T like being locked into the window every day.  My window ends at 7:30, so, for example, DH and I were up until 12:30 last night, I take my temperature at 5:30 (because that's when DH leaves for work), and you can bet I didn't want to drag my happy ass out of bed to pee on the stick before my window closed.  But, it's a small price to pay for the peace of mind it gives me.

Except this month, and I'll tell you the story, so you can be prepared:

As it's learning your cycle, it asks for less and less sticks.  If you O on day 19, for example, it won't ask you for your sticks on day 6, because why bother?

So this month it asked me on Day 7 (Day 15 O here), and when it put it in, I already got a High reading.  Why so early?  I have no idea, I'm on Day 9, so my 3rd high reading, and from what I can google search, this sometimes happens to people.  That would be the only time it takes my peace of mind, because now, I'm vascillating between "Am I going to ovulate early?" or "is the monitor being weird?"  We'll see, but, if I DO ovulate early, then, I never would have known without the monitor.

And now I'll accept my award for the longest post reply ever, and slowly back offstage...

@Mrs Green Grass: I saw your advice about the shiny side/rough side on the other thread, and seriously, THANK YOU.  I never would have thought to look, and you've saved me so much money in sticks, because I would be dumb and just let the pee hit where it landed.  Thanks :)

You. Need. To. Chart.... simply just chart and make sure you are taking your BBT. That can confirm for you if you are ovulating, have any deficiencies, etc... You don't need to be taking all kinds of tests, spending money on predictors, etc. Your body will tell you, you just need to learn the signs and ask the right questions to it. If you haven't read Taking Charge of Your Fertility, go to Barnes and Noble or another quality bookstore, TODAY, and get it.

Your "egg white" CF could be at any point day/night and for some lasts a while... some it goes as quickly as it comes... as soon as you experience "Egg white" I would ahem.... take advantage :) Sperm can live 2-5 days, your egg only about 24 hrs or so...

Don't be frustrated, with more talk about "unwanted" pregnancy in place of "desired" pregnancy we're conditioned to think it's an easy whenever we're ready thing... it's not, but as long as everything is in order, it will happen. If there is anything out of order (again, could be a simple hormone issue) you will only know what to "fix" by fully charting.

Regardless, a lot of people fail time and time again... and once they start to chart and interpret their fertility signs properly get preggers asap :). Also, don't forget about secondary signs of fertility like cervical position, etc...

@panterapeach: If the spotting is only for a day or so and it's another week until your period, it's likely less concerning, since it sounds like your overall LP is pretty normal.  I got this kind of spotting (w/o being pg) one month trying naturally and both months I've been on fertility meds and progesterone sup.  My RE doesn't seem overly concerned about it at this point, but it wouldn't hurt to call up your OBGYN and ask - if you already have one you like.  If you feel like they aren't giving you the time of day (mine didn't), it may be worth contacting an RE to ask - but they'll probably want you to come in for a full consult.  I'm not sure how old you are, but after 30 yo, most REs will see you after 6 months.  That said, it might be helpful to have a few months of charting under your belt before going to an RE - it's a really easy diagnostic tool that can eliminate the need for other tests.  Most of all, good luck!  Every time I try something different to help ttc, I get a renewed hope.  Hopefully you get good news before you make it to the doc :)

I used IC's for a while and even restocked but ended up being fed up with it. It seems that OPK's require you to check twice to make sure you don't miss the spike. So around lunch and then afternoonish. That was a whole lot of POSing! Then I had to stare at the lines to compare them and it drove me crazy!

I charted instead and I found it was less invasive. Buy one that keeps the last temp so you can write it down later and you don't have to wake-up and scribble it down. Have your hubby do it for you if possible -- as in sticking the thermometer in your mouth while you're sleeping. Once you both have a routine, it'll be easy peazy!

@Quietserenity:  I wonder if you just O'd early.  I think getting up to temp and pee is going to be a challange for me too.

@KLP2010: I have been doing everything but charting so far.  I have been doing cervical position/mucus checks, using cheep OPKs.  This month, I am going to start charting for sure and continue to check cp/cm as well as use the CBEFM.  Thanks for the reminder about how hard it is to actually get pregnant. You are absolutly right, people just dont talk about fertility struggles, just unwanted pregnancys.

@MerryC:  thats comforting to know my spotting may not be as big of a deal. (it does only last a day or so).  I am 32 and I am on the fence about my doctor, I really like her but I have only seen her once (I recently switched)  I think I am going to call her up in the next month or so if we havent had any luck.  I want to know but another part of me is terrified of going to a RE, because what if something is really really wrong. (stupid logic, I know)

@Vitsippa: thats very true, I was POS every time I went it seems with these cheepies. Plus now I think I need an eye appointment from trying to figure out what shade the line is.  Im hoping the CBEFM should clear some of that up.    I have a bbt, and it does keep the last temp.  I told DH last night that he needs to help me, and he said with what and I said "I dunno, but if I have to wake up everyday to chart, so do you" lol

Have you tried the CBEOPK's (the smiley face tests?)  I used the cheapie amazon ones and feel like the results are confusing - I end up with faint second lines for several days whereas the smiley face test is digital and therefore seems more reliable.

I haven't started temping, yet.  Maybe will start on that next month.  We got pregnant pretty quickly (second cycle) but then I miscarried.  So this will be our third cycle trying (but really our fifth month).

@winniewolf: i had not tried the digital ones. you are right the amazon ones are so confusing some times.it

My CBEFM just got here 5 min ago -- Amazon rules! I wanted to get it before CD1, (should be tomorow).  We have been trying since January.  (for two of those months we didnt BD during our good week, stupid stress)

So sorry for your loss, I hope you and DH get pregnant quickly again and it sticks!

@panterapeach: I don't think you "can even" get tested or referred to a RE until you have been un-succesful for 1-2 years (depending on age) and even then they'll make you chart anyhow... lol. So charting can only get you ahead if for any reason you do wind up needing specialization. I keep track of temp/symptoms etc using FertilityFriend.com (we use STM to AVOID for now) and it always helps interpret and keep track of everything. It's free, no spam, etc... It's AWESOME.

@KLP2010: My Dr starts testing after 6 months if you've been doing your "due diligence." He's on OB specializing in infertility, not an RE...

@Quietserenity: Glad I could help!  I don't even remember writing that before! : )  Isn't the window 6 hours long?  3 hours before you set it and 3 after?  I set mine around 7...usually temp at 5:45, but on weekends I'm not too late if I sleep in.

I'm on Day 8 today and it didn't even ask me to test!  But I went through A LOT of sticks the first couple of months.

@KLP2010: actually if you chart for 6 months THEN call for an appt they will usually see you with no trouble.

My baby making days are over (last adoption finalized a few months ago!) but I wish all of you ladies peace and serenity in this journey!

@Mrs Green Grass: Yeah, that was my problem, the second half of my last cycle I had such good readings and I was so happy about it, I couldn't get back to sleep.  So, when I got my period, I was still waking up early, so i just set my monitor right after I temped, so it got set at 4:30 because I'm a lunatic.

The first month I used 10 sticks, it was not bad!  But this month since it asked for a test on Day 7, and I keep reading high...I don't know how many sticks it will end up being.  And since DH is a babymaking tyrant, we've been BD since that day.  Which will be good if I end up Oing early, but right now, I sort of feel like it's a hassle.  Is that terrible of me? He's fantastic, and I can't get enough of him, but sometimes, I get really bitter about having sex according to the machine.
