Everyone has guilty pleasures. Just let him enjoy them when you're not around
If it makes you feel better my FI used to LOVE the Hills when it was on. lol
Mr.ND watches the Kardashians but refuses to admit it. I think they find it hilarous, and it's like a soap opera but not as shameful to admit. LOL. He always says he was 'waiting for me to come watch it with him' when I come over and he's got it on. Same with Jersey Shore. Cheap, hilarious entertainment. I wouldn't worry.
I laughed when I saw your title - hehehe
I think its cute. My dad LOVES bold and beautiful and he's in his 50's
LOL!! Oh he loved the Hills too! And the Real World and Jersey Shoreand pretty much any other reality show.
I used to like Real World 10 years ago, but now that we are older I just feel like we are in a different stage in our lives to watch this stuff
FI and I sometimes indulge in our guilty pleasure shows together and other times we don't. He has some that I don't and vice versa. Since it is just television, I don't think it's a big deal or even telling of a person's personality or desires. I like trashy TV sometimes because it requires little to no thought. It's just crazy people living their lives on a stage - with lots of money to throw around. Something about it is fascinating. (That being said, I can't stand the Kardashians.)
Basically? Yeah I wouldn't make a big deal out of it. If the tables were turned and you liked that type of show, don't you think you might find it silly that he had an issue with it?
My DS and I love reality shows. I do watch the Real Housewives of ___________ and the Kardashians. He'll sit with me and watch or if he's flipping channels and I'm in the other room he'll say "Hey babe one of the Housewives shows you like is on". It could be he also likes to watch them or maybe it's to support me and the shows I watch just like when I watch football with him.
I will admit our guilty pleasure is watching these types of shows. Although he has no shame and admits to friends and family we watch them. He'll say "You know, I'm a 51 year old man and I like to watch Jersey Shore, Teen Mom 2 and 16 and Pregnant". I think that we have got tired of watching sit coms and enjoy TV that's real life or as much as a produced reality show can get. Unless you're watching "Cops".
Why does it bother you? There's nothing wrong with having guilty pleasure TV shows.
DH knows all the Tabetha Salon Takeovers by heart, LOL. I find it more hysterical than anything. He is always watching cooking competitions and UFC fighting shows, I hate them, but he loves them. It is just something that we enjoy apart, I watch my SciFi shows and he has his shows.
I wouldn't worry about it at all. Those shows are trainwrecks (and I LOVE my RHOBH) that are fun to watch.
The best part about the Kardashian shows is watching Bruce Jenner wander thru the room every once in a while. (before he heads off to SYTTD Atlanta, where's he known as Monte)
@GroovyHippieChick: Yes! Or when he's just hanging out in the 400-square foot bathroom when people come in and start fighting.
I also love watching the big doofus husband of Kim. I'm kind of annoyed they're getting divorced.
My DH used to like the housewives shows but he got tired of them. He'll watch other girly shows with me too. I also have a 54 year old uncle who watches all the Real Housewives shows and talks about how crazy they are.
Most TV is just mindless whether it's geared towards men or women so I don't think it matters what people watch.
@turtle62212: I like both of those shows. It is my splurge of mindlessness for a few hours out of the day.
What is it specifically about the shows that bothers you, is it because the casts are mostly women, or is it just that the shows are so silly that you can't believe he'd watch it?
On the flipside, I WISH DH could even tolerate these enough so that I can watch them at home, I have to download them and watch them on my phone, usually while at work!
@turtle62212: We all have guilty pleasures, and I think that's important to remember. That being said, I completely understand where you're coming from on this, since those shows bother me too in a lot of different ways. Since it bothers you so much, I guess I would ask -- is this symbolic of a larger cultural mismatch between you and your SO? ie, you like theater, dramas, political coverage, and the like, and he likes "trash TV," and so you can't really connect on media? If so, then that issue is something to think about (do you have enough in common?) -- but otherwise, chalk it up to a quirk.
FYI, I found out recently that my FI's military dad enjoys the hell out of Say Yes to the Dress and Gypsy Weddings. I thought they were just MY guilty pleasures!
As long as he doesn't live in or a create a drama filled life I wouldn't worry about him watching someone elses.
@mittens111211 - I'm not exactly sure why it bothers me but its more that the shows are so silly that I just don't understand how a 42 yr old male could find them interesting. I don't care that the casts are mostly women. Don't get me wrong it's not a huge issue in our relationship....it's just one of those pet peeves that bothers me
@turtle62212: my DH watches about 3 different UK soap operas religiously. He gets teased about it, as they are generally popular with middle aged women, but he doesn't care! It only bugs me because it's hours each week wasted watching TV, and I have to sit through them - snore! I bet secretly guys watch all sorts of girly stuff!
My husband loves to watch Jersey Housewives with me, I love it haha! It's just fun, silly entertainment, hopefully you can get over it.
I think you should be thankful it isn't something worse! ;) Don't worry, tons of people love these shows-- or else they wouldn't still be on.
When my husband and I were dating, my roommate and I used to watch The Hills religiously. Sometimes he'd come over during the show and tease us "Why do you like this, it's so dumb". By the end of the season, he was right there on the couch in between us like "Why is Audrina so into Justin Bobby? He sucks, she could do better."
Now if you knew my husband, he pretty much watches ESPN, NFL and M*A*S*H and nothing else. Anyone can get sucked into reality shows!
@KatyElle: LOL to on the couch between you guys watching the hills!! Great mental image of two girls and a guy biting their nails to see what happens next, haha!!
My FI is the one that got me INTO the Real Housewives. He started watching them and then I joined. There isn't anything wrong with it, they are just guilty pleasures. FI doesnt watch b/c he is attracted to women like that or anything, he just loves watching them act badly and waste money. I guess it's an escape.
@tksjewelry: My FI likes Tabitha's Salon Takover! It's halarious watching a man who typically buzzes his own head in the bathroom get so caught up in a show about salons! He's forever making comments like "If that were my salon, I would..."
OP, unless he's obssesively trying to mimick those lifestylesm I say let him watch. I'm sure he doesn't enjoy every program you like.
My husband loves all the houswives shows and the kardashians and jersey shore and pretty much all those trashy reality things. Meanwhile I hate most of them! He has got me watching jersey shore (although it took him 3 seasons to get me to watch with him)... but I still refuse to sit in front of the rest of them. I don't really care... as long as I don't have to watch them :)
It's TV...stop. Leave the room when he watches and sew a skirt or paint or something.

My SO is obsessed with all the Real Housewives shows and the Kardashian's. I hate those shows and it bothers me that he likes them so much. I think part of it is we are older....he's 42 and I'm 36.
I just don't understand why he would have any interest in shows like that....Am I making a big deal of nothing?
