This is kinda pointless, but it’s such a load off my mind that I’m going to post it anyway.
So I’m an epileptic, and have been diagnosed for about 15 years (since I was 10). I’ve struggled with uncontrollable seizures despite medication and have never been able to drive due to my unstable condition. My entire adolescent life, the doctor I saw completely disregarded the fact that my medication didn’t stop (or even control much) my seizures. Of course, as a teenager, that made me rebe and stop taking it…because as I saw it, what was the point if it didn’t even stop them? For a while now I’ve been uninsured and completely unable to see a doctor since I fell into a loophole where I was financially sound enough to not qualify for financial assistance, but not actually able to pay the high cost of seeing someone who could help me learn more about my neurological issues.
Anyway, I moved back home and got a job at a supermarket in the area. Despite the job being a bit crap, it’s union and I’ve now finally got medical insurance.
A week and a half ago, I had a very bad seizure. I fell and hit my head and luckily my grandmother was there to call an ambulance, and I WA taken to the Emergency Room. Mind you, I’ve been to the ER many times, but this is the first time I was actually insured and able to schedule a follow up appt with a doctor. I went to that yesterday and the first thing she did was prescribe me a new medication! In two weeks I’ve got an appt with a neurologist to figure out if anything can be done about these seizures. The best part is, I pay nothing!
I’m so relieved that for once in my life, I can go to doctors appts when I need them without having to worry about not eating well for a week to get there. I’m so looking forward to what I hope will result in me having a normal life (and maybe being able to drive someday).
Sorry this was kinda long.
