Just remember it won’t be like this forever!  PhDs are supposed to kick your butt!

@jules28:  I know this sucks, and I HATE when people tell me to “look at the bright side,” but you have had non-stop employment for I’m guessing 4-6 years, no worries about “losing your job.” πŸ™‚

PhDs are the worst.

I actually left my program by turning the research I had done into a Masters and got a job. The people left in my program are now trapped in postdocs waiting to get jobs – which could be years and years because of the legacy of the NSF funding cuts of the Bush administration. It took me two weeks to get a job, and i’m actually happy and making money! Go figure!

Hang in there!

All I can say is that I sympathize πŸ™ I have two months to go before I finish my PhD and have gotten to the point where I could barely afford food if it wasn’t for my fiance. I wish I could afford to go to the dentist, get a haircut, and not wear shoes that are falling apart πŸ™ And then I have 7 months to go before I start a postdoc that pays barely more than what I’m making now. I just keep telling myself that it can only get better from here… I hope! πŸ˜€

I think I just pictured myself in a different financial situation at this stage in my life, and it makes me sad.

I have felt this way a lot – especially because I met my DH in grad school, so neither of us had a reasonable income. It’s really hard. I’m very close to being done (like, 3 weeks?! EEK!) and the academic job I have lined up for next year, while lavish by most adjunct standards, pays exactly the same as what I make now as a TA.  I’ll be going on the tenure track market next fall, but, well….if you’re in the humanities, you know what that’s like.

I don’t have any great advice but I just wanted to say that I’m sorry about your frustrations, and they totally make sense. Although your family and FI WOULDN’T be so understanding if they didn’t really mean it. I know you know that, and I also know that in no way helps the frustration.

I just finished my MBA (which, by the way, I recognize is like 10x less impressive than a PhD, but still my only way to relate) and I feel terrible that I’m bringing loans into our marriage, even though I know in the next few years per my agreement with my company they will pay them back…it still means we have less leverage when we sell and buy our house, and more debt.

For the record, I’m totally impressed that you are under 20 and almost a doctor. Hang in there.
