love my dyson (with motor powerhead). we live in an older home (no pets) and wow its scary what we were living in before it we got it
pro: powerful, easy to store, no dust bags to deal with and a friend has vacuumed her house and then ive done it with the dyson and it was amazing what my machine picked up and hers didnt
con: thinking i should have got the dyson animal because of my long hair shedding
I'm thinking Dyson Animal Ball, but the smaller model (fairly small apartment).
I love my Dyson Animal. There are 2 things I don't like about it:
1) It's difficult to manoeveur on stairs. It's pretty heavy and awkward.
2) It doesn't have a retractable cord.
Overall though, it has awesome power, and cleans SO well. I think its pros far outweight the two cons. I saw on tv the other day they have a little handheld Dysan that I might get for doing stairs, etc just so I don't end up killing myself some day. Our local news station works with Consumers Reports and did a thing about top vaccuums a couple weeks ago, go to this page and scroll down a bit until you see the one called "Vaccuum Options" (4th row). They didn't rate the Dyson, but they gave their top picks for ones that deal with pet hair, etc :)
I LOVE my dyson! but I do agree with Bakerella that it could use a retractable cord.
2) It doesn't have a retractable cord.
really? didnt know that so thanks - maybe i should stick to the model i have then
Oh, the con is that it ate one of our cheap rugs. Granted, the rug already had a snag in it, and the dyson just made it continue to unravel.
Check out the Miele vacuums. We have one (and we have pets) and we love it. It's more expensive than a lot of other brands, but it should last for many many years. The reviews are all great, and if you have any allergies, they are the best ones out there. The Dyson ones seemed to me to all be hype when I looked into them. And they aren't sealed, so they aren't good for people with allergies despite their advertising that they are.
I might be in the minority but I hate my Dyson. It ripped up my carpet and now I have to get it replaced. I have an electrolux model which I love so far but haven't used it very often.
We got our Dyson almost a year ago and love it. We have the original yellow model and it has been great. We have 2 cats and a dog that all shed a tremendous amount and the Dyson makes the carpet look like new. It also works really well on hardwood/tile which is what the majority of our house is except the area rugs that we have. Not only that but the tools work well for vacuuming baseboards, corners, windowsills and furniture. We vacuum everything. It's really easy to use, fairly lightweight and doesn't make as much noise as a normal vacuum. The animals arent even scared of it when we start to vacuum. I would highly recommend it!
I have the Dyson Animal with the purple ball. It's a very good vac...however, I don't think it's head and shoulders above other vacs in the same price range.
It's heavy. It's loud. Cleaning the filters is a little annoying. The Animal attachment isn't very good, IMO. I tried to use it in my car to pick up dog hair and it didn't do the job.
Again, it's a very good vac. However, I don't think it blows the competition in the $500 range out of the water.
If you search the boards you will see TONS of threads pro Dyson.
I've had one for probably 4 years now? I have a dog that sheds a lot and the vacuum works just as great as day one!
My ILs have the purple animal one and they have 3 dogs and 2 cats and that sucker is a champ and still going strong!
Add another vote from me for the Dyson animal...had it for 4 years, LOVE IT! With two black german shepherds it gets daily use, lol.
I've been on the fence about 'investing' in a Dyson for quite awhile. One question: will it make me NOT dread vacuuming?! For some reason, my least favorite 'chore' is vacuuming.
haha. It just might. Pre-Dyson my husband was never a big fan of vacuuming. Now he actually loves vacuuming. Seriously. Sometimes when we're cleaning he will ask me to leave the vacuuming to him because he loves it that much. hahah. He's silly.
We are going to be in the market for a new vacuum fairly soon, so i'm debating the Dyson, but now might look into the Miele. I need something that is geat on hardwood and regular carpet, but also won't pull out any strings in the carpet from the @#&%(%&)(@ cat using it as a scratching post....
I had a Dyson Animal and I hated it. It's too damn heavy for its own good, the attachments weren't that great. I'm not sure this vacuum is worth the extra cost. I used mine for about 2 years and recently threw it out and got a bissell pet hair eraser vacuum (for about a quarter the cost of the Dyson) and I swear it picks up more junk. When we got it we decided to vacuum our house one last time with the Dyson, and then we went over it with the new bissell.....ewww gross. The Dyson was missing so much dirt.
I have a Riccar vacuum and it is WONDERFUL! They're quite pricey but they'll last for years and years (like 12-15 at least). It also has all metal parts (instead of plastic) which allows it to hold up really well.
The specialty vacuum shop where I bought my vacuum also does vacuum repair. They said that they get more Dyson vacuums in for repair than any other brand (by a mile) because they are all plastic parts so they don't hold up to wear and tear and they'll break.
We love our Dyson Animal (ball)!
I wouldn't pay the outrageous sticker cost for it though. We tied ours in with a sale, with a Kohls coupon, on top of an employee (family member works there) discount. I think it was around $200 after all those coupons!
With two large dogs, I wouldn't go any other way. I've never had any problems with it eating rugs, but I wouldn't use it on a damaged rug. This thing has cleaned all our normal house rugs, including those yarn like bathroom mats.
@panterapeach: Right on.
If you have a $50 vacuum right now, the Dyson is going to make you very, very happy. If you have a $300 vacuum, the Dyson isn't going to blow your mind. I kind of wish I had checked out a Miele or even a Kirby.
The Sears where I bought my Dyson had people who just worked in the vacuum dept and they were happy to throw stuff on the floor and let me vacuum it up to test the different models.
I went with the Dyson because it had the Animal attachment. I think I've used it four times in four years. It's not a groundbreaking attachment.
I have a Dyson Animal that has been fantastic. (Going on 2 years with it.) Something happened to it though so that the tube doesn't break down all the way and it pushes a trap door open. To look at it, it shouldn't work for anything but somehow it still does an amazing job. I'm surprised at all of the heavy comments. Maybe my family just has older, crappy vacuums but I've found it very easy to move and not particularly heavy. It does suck for stairs though, no question there. I just let DH do them though so maybe I don't mind the awkwardness after all. :-)
We had a Meile (I think) salesman coming through town and I was feeling nice so I let him do his schpeal. The vacuum seemed very impressive and had really great features but I'm just not interested in paying nearly $1k for a vacuum although I'm sure it's worth it. (The $1k+ was MSPR I think he brought it down to $700-something and they'll do no interest payments.)

We LOVE our Dyson Animal. Well well well worth the investment!
Probably biased because I stepped up to a Dyson from a cheapie $40 thing that spit out more dust than it sucked up, so... keep that in mind.
But, I have the Dyson Animal and it is amazing. My old vacuum would just get a little dusty in the canister, sort of to prove that it really could pick up a little dust? Well, the first time I used the Dyson there was an INCH of dust in there. It was DISGUSTING. And awesome. I actually don't mind vacuuming now.
I really like the design of the Dyson and how its parts fit together neatly. It's quite a feat of engineering and design.
Oh, and I don't work for them or anything :) I actually bought it myself so I feel qualified to say it is worth the cost!
I also have a Dyson Animal. I have found that if you have low quality carpet or berber carpet, it will eat it. We have had to turn off the beater bar because otherwise it just chews right through our carpet. I also find it heavy and cumbersome on the stairs.
I have the smaller Dyson, which has been great for our condo- we have a cat and it never fails to amaze me how much hair comes out of our carpets, even if it's only been a week since we last vacuumed. It works well and I think we'll keep it even after we move to a bigger house since it does such a good job.
@Gerbera, my husband loves to vacuum too! He loves to see how much dirt and hair comes out of the carpet. He gets so excited. :)
We got a refurbished Dyson that I ordered on Amazon.com. I think it saved us about $150 over a new one. It's blue and purple, which is weird. But a vacuum is a vacuum, and it definitely picks up more than my old Shark.
I have an Oreck and can't recommend it enough! I actually was planning on buying the Dyson until I saw it in person and realized how big and heavy it was. Orecks are known for being extremely powerful but lightweight. Although they look kind of 70's :)
I'll put it this way: DH and I did not know the true colour of our carpet until we got our Dyson.
Go Dyson! Period. You won't go wrong. Hands down the B-E-S-T investment I have EVER made. E-V-E-R!
i have the orange dyson ball one and its been wonderful. we've had it for over a year and it picks up all the dust and hair that accumulates. it has a pull out hose which is great for stairs and nooks.
update - ladies, we got the dyson. AND iT'S AWESOME! not joking, it picked up so much hair on the first run I almost barfed. Amazing.
I love my Dyson. I got it at Bed Bath. Although their coupons for 20% off specifically say they cannot be applied to a Dyson, I think most cashiers there look the other way and would still apply it....so that might be one option if you are looking for a deal!
You won't believe what you're living in until you vaccuum it all up with a Dyson.
We have a black lab who sheds a lot, and I was amazed at what our Dyson Animal (purple ball) picked up. I absolutely love it. I have allergies and asthma so it's helped my health out tremendously.
Only con I can find is it's super loud and my doggy is so scared of it :(
If you haven't already chosen - check out one of the sharks like the lift away. It's only around 160 and works awesome. When I was looking into it reading reviews on amazon and bb&b etc a lot of people had replaced their dyson's with it and absolutely loved it. I LOVE mine!
I love our Dyson Animal...it is great for keeping our carpets looking new (we have a 100 lb malamute that is an indoor dog...he's a shedding nightmare!). The only thing that I've found that is negative about it is that it is frightening to our dog! He HATES the vacuum with a passion. But we love it, and we're the keepers of the kibble, so I think we trump him on this battle. =P
Yep! We got a Dyson and I am IN LOVE WITH IT! It is definitely, definitely worth all of the hype :)

After we got married I brought my vacuum from college to our apartment. It's hardly a vacuum, it's basically a step up from a restaurant vacuum. Basically, it doesn't suck. And with a 94 pound dog, that's not going to work very well.
I would like to get the best product available, but I also want to be smart with my budget. Is a Dyson really worth it, or am I deceived by their awesome advertisements? Am I going to get a Eureka and regret it in a few years? Am I going to have to replace it? pros? cons? help ladies!
