Last night, SO stayed after work to have a couple of drinks. I picked him up and he was a little drunk, and we were just talking, then he told me he coughed up blood. I was alarmed, and started freaking out. I said we have to get you to a doctor. I asked if this has happened before, he denied it had. (I always ask, he has coughing fits -like a tickle in his throat – sometimes, he’s been a smoker for 20 years). Now, he’s being a man about it and saying ‘don’t worry about it’, but I know this is one symptom you can’t ignore. I’m stressed and worried. He’s very bad about staying on top of his health – he needs blood tests for possible diabetes, and a gene test for a condition where there is too much iron in his blood, but he is extremely needle phobic. Last night I got angry because he doesn’t take care of himself, he doesn’t follow doctors orders and now he’s telling me not to worry about coughing up blood?
I just wonder, can you cough up blood and it not be something like lung cancer? I know, ultimately he has to see the doctor and have tests to know for sure, I guess I’m just looking for reassurance because I always tend to think the worst 🙁

@Deejayelle: Coughing up blood does not automatically mean lung cancer. Bronchitis and pneumonia can also cause it. Sometimes it doesn’t have a cause and goes away on its own. The same thing happened to FH a few months ago, I had to bribe him to go to the doctor, they ran tests and he was completley fine. He’s healthier than I am actually.
I wouldn’t automatically go to the worst case scenario.

This happens to my husband sometimes, and all it is is a burst blood vessel in his throat or esophagus. The first time it happened, we were terrified and worried about cancer, but the doctor assured us that all it takes is one weak vessel to cause that to happen and it’s not a big deal. However, this should be a wake up call to your SO to take better care of himself. I know how frustrating that one can be!

@Deejayelle: Was it just blood he coughed up, or was it mucus with blood. If it’s mucus and blood, it could just be from the sinuses.

1. Don’t freak out. It COULD be minor or even nothing.
2. Insist that he make appointments to go to the doctor and deal with these things.

I actually coughed up blood just last week lol. I have a chronic lung condition that makes me cough a lot and have very deep coughing fits. it is not that totally uncommon for me to cough up blood. I do not have cancer or TB or any other fatal disease

Sometimes my nose dries out from nose spray and I will spit blood up with mucus but I know it’s allergy related. My FI’s gums bleed A LOT, it took him like a year to listen to me and go to the dentist bc I knew he had periodontal disease. I freaked out when I saw how red the sink was when he brushed his teeth. It totally grosses me out. Now I’m nagging him to go back for follow up. Men are so annoying, like take care of your body you only have one!! I tell him it’s cheaper to take proper care of your mouth than buy new teeth. 🙁 not to mention all of the possible health conditions that result from their symptoms not being addressed. Keep on him and possibly go to the Dr with him. Ugh they never grow up.
