In general, customization is far more expensive than selecting a pre-made setting.

Can you get the certificate/stats about the diamonds from each store to compare?

authentic: Give your man some reading material on the 4Cs. Blue Nile, GIA, Tiffany, all have good info on their websites. Once he understands why the price of diamonds can vary so drastically it’ll be easier for him to purchase the one you want. As PP said, customization really is quite an expense.

You can do a lot with your budget! The prices on rings in malls are usually ridiculously high becuase they need to mark up their prices to pay for the rent, the staff’s salaries, the name, etc. etc. And you’re right, that doesn’t always mean quality. There are lots of great wholesale websites out there, like Blue Nile. Another great one, is James Allen because you actually get to see a 360 view of the stone and can compare stones. It really lets you get a sense of the quality, etc.

Here’s a setting from Blue Nile (without centre stone) $850. http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-ring/diamond-engagement-ring-white-gold_20306?elem=img&track=product

Here are 2 stones for you from BN:

1. 0.50ct, F, VS2, Ideal cut – $1742 http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD04864373

2. 0.70 H, VS2, Ideal cut – $2298 http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD05023985

And that’s just an example!! There are so many stones to chose from!! 🙂 Good luck!!!

I just checked James Allen (this is fun!)

Here are 2 stones from James Allen:

1. 0.50 ct, H, VS2, Excellent cut $1840 http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.50-carat-h-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-376952

2. 0.68ct, H, VS1, Excellent cut $2880 http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.68-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-380037

authentic: Any time! I’m home for the morning as well so this is great 🙂

In terms of the local jeweler, I’d give them a call and just find out the specs! Once your boyfriend gets a better understanding of the 4Cs then it will be helpful info for him.

It’s good to know what you’re paying for!

I would look online. You definitely can get more for your money than in a mall store, and you CAN get a custom ring from someplace like BlueNile with a 2,000-3,000 budget. Take a look at the Recently Purchased rings page on Blue Nile and you can see lots of rings purchased in that price range. Here’s a link to it, I look at these rings all day LOL bit.ly/10zEyq1

F is colorless and if the SI1 looked eye clean to you that is a great buy.

F is amazing!! You can definitely get a good SI1 too!! LIke @Consultette and @honeybee2014 mentioned , it’s all about the cut! That’s where the most light/sparkle comes from 🙂

Plus, it’s good that your SO is educated because as a consumer, you don’t want to be taken by someone trying to sell you a lower quality item for more money. 🙂 You can also barter a bit with jewellers. Ask them what kind of deal they will give you! It can’t hurt and they have lots of competition!

Sounds like you’ve found a good one for sure!!
