...you don't?
I was just talking with my friend at work and we were discussing how she is terrible at organizing. I on the other hand LOVE organizing (hence why my desk situation is bothering me immensely). She was saying how she needs an intern to help her out and I agreed that I could use one, but they would hate me because I'm so particular. She asks what I meant by that and I told her, "let's just say my roommate has learned to just let me load the groceries on the conveyer belt because I have a system".
She responded with :
Hahahahahaha! "system" huh? Let me guess, you stick all the food categories together (freezer, fridge, cupboard, then by size and shape of packaging, etc?) I can see it....
.... Maybe? Is this weird?! Am I the only one who does this? Is this considered borderline OCD?
No! I do this and the hubby laughs at me all of the time. My goal is mostly to keep all the frozen things together, then the refrigerator items, then fruits, then meats, and bread and eggs last so they end up on top of the cart. You are not alone. I don't think it's OCD. I think it's a sign of intelligence. LOL
FI and I both do this! I was pretty pleased when I found out he shared in my compulsion! :)
DH and I both do this, it makes it so much easier when you are unloading everything!
I do this and I am not OCD by any means. It only makes sense. When the 16 yr old is trying to see how quickly he can scan things I dont want my bread being crushed by a gallon of milk!
Hooray! It's not just me!
I just think to myself how much it has got to suck when the person checking us out has to dig through for like items to be able to bag efficiently, and then you're stuck with the heaviest stuff going in the cart last because you didn't pre-plan, and now you have to move everything around so you don't squish the eggs/bread/whatever.
I do this! I put all the cold stuff together, all the meat together, all the produce together, all the larger bottles (milk, juice) together, etc. I group them how I want them bagged.
I use reusable bags, they are string bags, I try not to be b!tchy, but I'm always "intruding" because the cashiers/sackers don't know how to use them. Yes, you can put more than 2 items in a bag, they are designed to hold 40 pounds each! Stuff those suckers as full as you can!

(Mine are all different colors!)
@sleepingbeauty88: I miss the south, no one bags your groceries for you in jersey
@LGenz: really? that's interesting. Do they at least provide bags for you to bag your own?
It's not a compulsion, it's normal and sensible - it stops you squashing delicate things/defrosting cold things.
@sleepingbeauty88: what grocery store do you shop at? just curious!
@LGenz: really??? I would rather someone bag my groceries than pump my gas!
@sleepingbeauty88: Its the exact same setup, there just no one at the end waiting to bag for you and 90% of the time the cashier will relucatantly bag two items.
@sleepingbeauty88: I only get stuff put in bags for me in smaller stores or if they ask if you want them to help you.
I have a system too, but aside from keeping the frozen stuff away from the fruit, its more about prioritizing. I put the must-haves first, the should-gets second, and the just-wants last. Then I watch the prices while scanning and make sure I don't go over budget :)
I do. I always thought my mother was crazy for doing it when I was really little, but now I'm in charge of unloading the cart;)
@PitBulLover: I think its worth it, I feel so terrible for those people in February when theres like hail (not bad enough that I would ever offer to get our and pump it myself haha)
When we drove down for the wedding it was in our "new" car and when I got out to pump gas I realized I had zero idea how to open the gas door thingy
I used to work in a supermarket and had to pack bags for people so I definitely do pay attention to what goes in each bag. Its so much better to keep the frozen stuff together and then chilled stuff together as well and keep anything hot away from them. I also make sure to pack laundry or detergent items separate from ready to eat items because the smell transfers to the food.
I do this and organise them when packing them too, it gets on Mr Prewitt's nerves if he comes shopping with me
I am a so-so bagger I guess... I just let the teenagers at the counter do it and fix it later when I get home! As long as they all end up in the buggy I am good!
Ewww, are there people who actually put their cold wet freezer stuff next to their boxed cereal?? Oh the humanity!
my husband does this, I'm a really organized person but since most of the time the bagger does his own thing anyway I don't think it's worth it. And honestly when they put all my canned goods in one bag it's so hard to carry.
I totally organize my groceries on the conveyor belt. Otherwise the bagger does stupid things like bag fruit with meat. Seriously?? Or they put the bread with something that will squish it! Or cold things spread throughout with non-cold items. Umm, stick all the cold stuff together! Great. I'm getting a twitch thinking about it. hahahaha
I do this b/c my first job was in a grocery store and now I find that the "kids" that work in the store today have no idea how to pack my items. I learned the 3 C's of bagging. Cold, Chemical, Crushable!!!
I can't tell you how excited I was when they started putting in the self checkout lanes. Then I can do it myself. :)
I organize my items, but by density/weight/potential to get damaged. The worst thing is to get your groceries home and discover smushed bread, broken eggs, and injured fruit.
So, I do cans, jars, frozen things, and random heavy items first; then meats, cheeses, and other dairy; then more fragile stuff like pasta, bread, fruits, and vegetables. With my system, it usually ends up getting organized by storage area naturally.
@LGenz: well thats a good point you make! And thats how my NJ roommate in college was with her car!
Yeah, I do this too. They're usually really good about setting bread or eggs to the side, but I like my stuff packed "right" so I put it on there right. Let chance for someone to mess it up.
I do not do this ha ha looks like I'm the minority. The only thing I make sure of is that the breakable/smushable (what? it's a word..) stuff is put on last so it doesn't get broken or smushed when it gets put back in the cart.

As a former cashier, I can tell you this makes bagging go MUCH faster, and it makes it easier for people to unload their groceries when they get home.
DH has a convyer system designed to aid in bagging. I let him have fun with it.
I always do this but DH just throws everything out there. He laughs at me as I try to move stuff around after he's already set it down on the conveyor belt.
I definitely do this! Except I put all the boxy things together, all the meats together, all the veggies/fruits together, etc.
im super anal about my groceries being put on the belt in order and how they are packed - hubby doesnt even bother anymore, he just stands back and lets me do it
i also have no problem with calling out a checkout chick/jock if they pack the bags incorrectly (hello, the whole watermelon is the natural enemy of the strawberry so why put them in the same bag) but ive found most pack very responsibily and i also have no problem telling the store/manager via feedback when i get good service - i know being a checkout person is something i couldnt do as its a tough job putting up with customers all day
I do this because I dont like making it frustrating for the checkout operator...I worked as a checkout operator for awhile and it really slowed things down and was a hassle when people didnt order their groceries on the belt. We have to pack them correctly anyway (well, where I worked we did), so the least the customer can do is not make it more difficult.
Yes, I do this! My husband use to always load them on. Then I started doing it & we get through the line & out the door much faster now. Even the woman bagging them told me she loved how I put my groceries on the belt. lol
I totally do this and FI shakes his head at me. I hate when he bags too. He definitely doesn't understand the system and science behind it. :P I think it comes from when I worked in grocery stores before and I learned to make it easier for customers.
@LGenz: They bag our groceries in Jersey. Just takes them a hell of a lot longer because they don't always have a "bagger" and it's the cashier. As I mentioned above, I'm a former cashier and I always made sure to bag. But I have to disagree with PitBulLover. I would much rather someone pump my gas for me. :P
oh yeah I definately do this!it drives my husband nuts!he also has a problem with not stacking things. Me;I`ll put similair stuff on top of each other(like ceral boxes, tins etc)but my hubby just lays it all out flat on the belt so it takes up twice as much space, and takes longer for it all to be scanned, maybe its just me who does that, but it just seems to make more sense to have it all stacked up rather than spread out lol
