So I was reading the Coke vs. Pepsi thread, and it got me thinking about how we all refer to cokes (or sodas or whatever) as different things.
I've always referred to all of them as coke. No matter what they actually are...so does most of my family. We often have the following exchange:
"Do you want a coke?"
"Yes!"
"Okay, what kind?"
It's kind of funny when I meet people who call it pop or soda, because I always really confuse them! What do you call it?
Soda, unless it's actually a Coke, then I call it Coke.
I think this is a regional thing. West Coast- soda, Midwest Pop, South- Coke.
I grew up on POP, but then I tried to learn to say SODA. But really, in Michigan, it's POP. A coke is Coke and soda goes in your cookies. :o)
I used to live in WA where it was pretty split so I ended up saying both, "soda pop"
Growing up in the Midwest, I always said pop. When I moved to the east coast I was sick of people thinking I was weird to call it that, so now I'm converted to calling it soda. Now I think pop sounds weird.
@krissy - I had a friend who used to say soda pop! It just made me giggle.
Here's a map I found illustrating this debate!

How accurate do you think it is?
I have to say that map is the most awesome thing I've ever seen!
Poor Alaska is just a mess! You could say any one there and be ok!
I call it soda most of the time, but frequently 'coke,' which for me is synonymous with 'cola' because I only drink Coke (and not Pepsi) ;)
Growing up in Ohio I always called it 'pop'. Now that I live in Florida, I've been trained by all my friends to call it 'soda'. They began ignoring me when I called it 'pop', so I had to start calling it 'soda' if I ever wanted one!
Yeah we called it soda in NJ where I grew up but I went to school in upstate NY and they called it pop. I prefer soda because when I hear pop I always hear it in my aunt's nasal NY accent....cringe.
I call it soda - if someone offers me a Coke I assume they are offering me Coca Cola :)
I'm from DC and I call it soda. For those that voted "other" what do you call it?
I call it soda. "Pop" reminds me of all my relatives and my exbf from Minnesota!
I also think it's very regional. : ) In Canada most people call it "pop" (that I've heard).
Hmm I say both soda and pop, unless it's a Coke, then I call it Coke. I normally say pop but my friend last weekend kept calling it soda so she got me on it too. Very confusing!
This is very specific to the areas around Boston, but I call it tonic. :) People never know what I'm talking about, so I've switched to soda. If someone says pop, I think of a lollipop, not soda.
I say soda...unless we have 3 or 3 kinds, then I say "Mountain Dew" or "Sprite".
Whoa! I always thought everyone in the US just called it soda, but this thread has proven me wrong! In Canada, all across Canada, it is called pop. Coke refers specifically to Coca Cola. Pepsi is Pepsi, but pop covers it all!
Here in Chicago we called it Pop.. been in NYC and people there called it soda.. -Ian
Heehee, that map is awesome. And it's right about the midwest--it's all called POP!
Im from upstate ny, but my mom is from the south so I call everything coke. When I go out to eat, I ask what kind of coke they have. My FH used to call it soda or pop, but he has converted to calling it all coke.
I'm from the midwest and we definitely call it pop. My FI is from New England and he calls it soda. I lived there awhile and people did look at me funny whenever I said pop.
This is so funny. My family vacations at a place that many Americans also vacation at and we've had this conversation many times. I'm with the other Canadians above; pretty much all Canadians call it pop! What I always found weird was when Americans called brown bread 'wheat bread'. When I waitressed there we had to ask what kind of toast they wanted and half the time I didn't know if they said "white" or "wheat". BROWN IS SO MUCH LESS CONFUSING!
Hah! This is one of my favorite conversations I dunno how I missed it yesterday. I say soda.
I also say Lollipop (not sucker or pop), sneakers (not tennis shoes or trainers), sprinkles (not jimmies).
And don't get me started on the: sub vs. hoagie vs. grinder vs. footlong subject. LOL
Oh boy! Don't get me started!!
lol. It's so POP!
That map is actually pretty accurate-at least for NY.
I'm a midwestern girl so it was "Pop" for me :) I spent a summer in Florida a couple of years ago and EVERYONE mocked how I called it pop (and my northern accent). That map is SO awesome!
I'm Midwest and we definitely call is soda... But I know other areas of Missouri call it pop.
I was born in Wisconsin, and only really visited Minnesota when I was younger. We always called it pop, or soda pop, now that I live in PA I have been trying to call it Soda more often, but sometimes I still call it Pop.
