From what I've read, if the mattress is firm, you should be okay. As long as there's not a comforter or something that the baby can burrow its head in. I wouldn't think the extra "softness" from a mattress pad and fitted sheet would cause an issue.
I would think "softness" would mean "puffiness." Like puffy blankets, comforters, really soft mattresses, etc... Anything the baby could sink into and potentially suffocate in. What you described (firm mattress, cover, and sheet) sounds just fine. :)

Can someone please explain to me how I know if baby's bedding is too soft? The mattress we purchased seemed plenty firm, and while not cardboard, it certainly didn't scream "too soft." However, I put on the mattress cover (Babies R Us brand waterproof mattress cover) and a fitted sheet, and suddenly I'm questioning if the bed is "too soft." Does that really only refer to like, comforters or pillows and a "soft environment" all together, or should I be worried that just because I don't think the bed is rock solid, I'm setting my baby up for SIDS? Am I overthinking? Ahh! I'm tempted to go buy a different mattress cover or something, but I don't know how to even judge what soft bedding is. Someone please help my tired pregnant brain. Thank you! :)
