We did a really casual one.  We reserved a room at a restaurant.  We paid for a bunch of appetizers for everyone.  People could sit down and eat if they wanted but they didn’t have to.  It was really fun.  We did most of the planning ourselves, I just wanted to have a chance to get everyone together =)

Our engagement is going to be for a little over 2 years, and we did an engagement party a couple of months after he propsed! We invited close family and kept it small and intimate. We did it at a local restuarant that had a room reserved for parties, and my parents and me FI’s parents split the bill.

You do not have to have someone host it for you though! It could be something as simple as a back yard BBQ with close friends and family to a more formal dinner. I would talk to your family’s and discuss options and move on from there! Good luck and an early congrats!

That is exactly how we felt! I was so excited to get engaged, but knew the wedding would be so far away. I was the first one in my family to have an engagement party, but after talking to my parents (and his parents) about it they all agreed, and it was super sweet of them to offer to pay for it! It is a nice way to show off your ring and get a chance to glow in the moment. Plus, i figured the advantage of having a longer engagement would mean that I would get to save money and do all of the little things that go with it!

Well I had a engagement party/ meet and greet. My now husband and I hosted the party. I really wanted our friends and family to meet each other and I really wanted the wedding party to meet and get.to know each other. It’s nothing wrong with hosting your party. And long or not it would be good to have one so you can bring together both family

We hosted our engagement party, our parents gave us very generous gifts. Everyone else (11 ppl) gave us $50 each (we asked for this) because we had a full day engagement party at Rottnest Island and bought ferry tix for everyone, snorkel gear, hop on hop off bus tickets, lunch and booze. It was a beautiful 32 degree day and cost much more than $50 pp! We contributed about $2000 including flights from the other side of the country.

I have never heard of parents hosting engagement parties although it is common for parents to host (pay for) the wedding, or at least a portion of it.
