@sugarpea:

1. I personally did send both, but I also only had one guest who sent a gift ahead.  I was so incredibly grateful and overwhelmed with the love on that day, it felt right to me to thank the guest for their attendance (and I had a funny story to reference from our reception). But there are lots of people who will say that this is not required. For me however, there was no question.

2. I would send a generic TY rather than one referring to you by your married name that you don’t have yet.

3. Every gift gets its own card. If they went through the trouble to select and buy a gift, they get a card. 2 gifts equals 2 cards, period.  Whether you send a thank you for attending, is up to you.

Here’s what I’d do:

1. Send the thank-you note when you receive the gift; don’t wait till after the wedding. Also, you don’t have to send anyone a thank-you note for attending the wedding (well, except wedding party members) — the reception is how you thank them.

2. Yeah, I’d use different cards that don’t have your married name printed on them for any gifts received before the wedding.

3. Yes, for each gift, send a thank-you note. In your example, I’d send 2 notes — one for the shower gift and 1 for the wedding gift that arrived before the wedding. None for attending the wedding.

I’ve been sending thank you notes as gifts have been arriving.

You actually aren’t supposed to be sending cards with you married name until after the wedding, so I would agree with some standard cards. You could buy some special bridal shower ones that you use before, in case any gifts come before the shower.
