So, I did not set out to watch the Grammy's last night. It happened out of sheer bordem, and then curiosity about how they would pay tribute to Whitney, and then I stuck around to see Paul McCartney. I, admittedly, am not a huge fan of much in the realm of music these days. There are few muscisians and bands that I really like, and I feel most of the stuff that is played on the radio is overproduced crap. Talentless, even. Obviously there are exceptions, but as far as modern music goes...I can't find anything on a top 40 station that I can bear to listen to almost. I am a fan of the "classics" as far as bands/music go. British Invasion rock and roll, The Who, The Beatles, The Stones. Motown, Doc Watson, Van Morrison...music that I feel actually MAKES you feel something.
Anyway. So the Grammy's. I have sooo many questions, y'all. Despite what I stated above, I have to say I do love Adele. I think she is adorable, I think she is raw talent, I think she is down to earth, and I thought she was deserving of each of the awards she won. I do love her, and I thought she killed every single second of her performance.
So now, my questions:
1. What in the ever-loving fuck was Niki Minaj doing? I have never even HEARD one of her songs (but oddly, I know many of these pop musicians by name/face because of blogs I frequent) I found myself sitting on the couch thinking I was in some crazy alternate universe that I couldn't quite wrap my brain around during her performance. Please help shed some light.
2. What is a deadmau5 or a Skrillex? Are these people? Is what they do "musically" actually considered an art? If they're standin behind DJ equipment, how can they even prove they are DOING anything. If I was paying out the ass to see them live (which sounds so weird, I can't believe they can sell out Earl's Court or other venues around the world...THEY STAND BEHIND A COMPUTER!!!!!!), I"d want to kow they were actually doing work up there. I just do not get it. And please, explain the mouse head. I just.....can't.
3. What is dubstep? Is it the same thing as a deadmau5 or a skrillex (though I think I now realize that deadmau5 and skrillex are people? is that right?)? I can't understand what this is either.
4. Chris Brown. That's all. Really? Why??
5. Why does LMFAO get to be a thing?
Obviouusly, this is in no way intended to offend anyone or their musical choices. I appreciate that everyone loves and appreciates different music, I thing watching last night just opened my eyes to things that are happening in music right now. Mainly, this electro stuff. I am kind of shocked! I kept thinking "isn't it unfair that the people in this audience get to take with them this memory and 40 years from now they'll tell their kids..."oh I remember seeing the biggest electronic house music DJ in the world". How I wish I got to live in the era during which I could tell my kids today "Oh, I remember seeing Led Zeppelin in London". Sigh.
Haha...I have a few of the same sentiments that you do above, but I wanted to say that I loved Dave Grohl's acceptance speech for the Foo Fighters winning best rock performance. He talked about making the album in his garage with a few mics and a recorder with raw talent. Awesome.
As for Nikki Minaj, I have no idea what the heck that was...
I am going to answer all of your questions with one phrase ....
I HAVE NO F-ING CLUE!
I am so annoyed by all of the music thats out these days! Adele, Paul McCartney, Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, The Band Perry and a few others did tasteful performances but I have no words for everyone else. I was a little disappointed in the grammy's overall.
My favorite part was the Beach Boys. I love them. My father would always be play their music in the car. :)
Honestly I like Nikki Minaj...but that was one of the weirdest and creepiest things I have ever seen. She's up on the weirdness scale with Lady Gaga and Madonna. Not a fan of the song or performance.
Oh, and I had heard on the radio this morning that there were a ton of people tweeting, "Who is this Paul McCartney guy?" I cringed when I heard that...
@MissCallieJean: and the sad thing was....that crazy ass performance totally took away from whatever she was singing. I've heard tons of stuff ABOUT her and how she can do cool vocal things, so I thought "oh, yeah, I've heard she's interesting"...but then 30 seconds in I"m sitting with my mouth hanging open wondering if my brain was going to continue functioning after what was happening on stage. Have not one clue what she was singing.
I love that Dave Grohl talked about recording their album in a garage and proceeded to perform with deadmau5
Can Taylor Swift please go away now? Why did she look SHOCKED that people applauded her performance? Even 6 yr olds at a ballet recital expect applause.
Chris Brown's performance belonged at the VMAs, I'm usually ok with performers not singing while dancing but its the GRAMMYS
@2PeasinaPod: oh god. Just...omg. This will hurt your heart:

RIP Society...
haha! i hear you! especially Chris Brown - ummmm?!
thorughout University I was always top 40's person but lately I have completely switched over to New Country (LOVE satelitte radio)... the lyrics are stories and are relatable and so cute
hate hearing 'i wanna bang on the dance floor' in every song LOL makes me feel old though!!!
@akp0702: Honestly the song was just as strange. It wasn't good. She should have picked something better.
@LGenz: EVERY SINGLE TIME taylor swift performs and acts sooo super humbled and shy about people applauding her I think of when Sally Field won an oscar "OH!! YOU LIKE ME! YOU REALLY, REALLY LIKE ME!!" It's kind of pathetic and needy. I'm over it.
Nicki Minaj - how many people did you sleep with to get a record deal? Seriously, you can be called a 'performer' if you like (although what the heck you were performing last night, I don't want to know), but you are not a singer.
Taylor Swift - girl, I will listen to you on the radio, but you hurt my ears when you sing live and if I see you do that 'omigosh they're cheering for me?' act one more time, I'm going to write yet another really snarky FB status about you, cause that's all I can do. You are fast becoming incredibly annoying and obnoxious. Graciously bow and accept the applause/awards like every other freaking performer.
Also, sing the 'I can't sing' line on-pitch. It'll be much more helpful to your case.
Adele - you sing so beautifully, and you always sound like an exquisite high-society British lady when you sing. But then you talk and it's so Cockney! Also, the 'snot' line? Hilarious. Glad to see you win like, everything!
Carrie, Lady A, Band Perry, I love you all. Keep being awesome.
Oh, and blue/granny hair? Not cool. Stop it now.
@hisgoosiegirl: "Oh, and blue/granny hair? Not cool. Stop it now."
YES!!! Thank you! Someone was going on and on about how amazingly gorgeous Katy Perry looked and all I could think of was blue krimped hair that looked awful.
I watched for a bit, but turned it off after Rihanna "performed". Her hair, the outfit, the rolling on the ground and awkwardly bending over to show the crowd her bum...no ma'am. FI and I just kept saying " what... is... she.... doing?" I wouldn't be surprised to find she is on drugs or something, she looks a hot mess.
Nikki Minaj was a disaster last night, but she can rap. Listen to Monster on My Dark Twisted Fantasy (or whatever the h*ll Kanye named his latest album). When you can steal the spotlight from Kanye you're good.
I didnt watch it, but I heard all about how Chris Brown won and it disgusts me. And so does this...
http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/horrible-reactions-to-chris-brown-at-the-grammys
@PitBulLover: Yea, just saw those while scrolling through news on my phone at lunch. Upsetting is an understatement.
Katy perry is a guilty pleasure of mine I am ashamed to admit, but I did like her new song. Russel bahing included. Lol The blue hair and the outfit not so much.
@imalittlebirdie: The thing is, its not a new song. She recorded it in like 2010 and it didnt make the album. She's re-releasing the album and they added the track since now it works perfectly with the divorce.
@PitBulLover: OMG! Is that site serious?? Disgusting. I was quite sad to see him win anything and I think it is sad that people within society still praise him and allow him to perform at and win Grammys after what he did.
@Mrs.KMM: yes, it's serious. Those are just tweets taken from women during the Grammys last night. So not okay.
I watched Downton Abbey and I'm 100% certain I watched the better show.
The very thought of Rhianna, Chris Brown, and the Menaj person juxtaposed with Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, and Brian Wilson cracks me up.
Award shows have become so absurd to me. There's an obligatory nod to the true talent that has successfully weathered decades in a fickle industry followed by a gaudy celebration of people who aren't so much talented as lucky to have been in the right place at the right time.
I'm still wondering about these dubstep/deadmau5, and skrillex things. What IS that?? Is anyone else as perplexed as I am?
@akp0702: I dont know about dubstep, but if you are a DJ (like one who spins/makes music) it does actually take a lot of talent. You are mixing beats which isn't just something anyone can do.
@PitBulLover: yeah....I guess I just don't see where the entertainmen value kicks in. You can't even SEE what they're doing. I guess listening with an untrained ear makes it really easy to be SUPER unimpressed. But, I'd be wary that they were even really doing anything.
I had one of my grade 8 students called Nicki Minaj's performance last night "awesome and progressive"...
I don't think they understand the meaning of progressive.
And Chris Brown? ... UGH
Dubstep is a genre of dance music. Its pretty big here in the UK - not personally my taste but hey!
Nicki Minaj - I had a really strong reaction to her. I have never been a fan of her music. A couple of her features on songs are pretty good but when she starts with the extraness I just can't... I was totally turned off.
Chris Brown, meh. I think the man can dance, I think he is talented. Is he an a-hole, yes. He made a mistake, an awful mistake but at some point we have to move on. He's young, immature and obviously has anger issues. But can we let the man live!!! People have done far worse than he has done (Roman Polanski anyone) and have not faced the backlash that he has. I'm not condoning his actions I just think that he should be allowed to prove that he has changed and be given another chance.
@basketballwifetobe: I don't want this to turn into a debate, but I just have to say I disagree with the Chris Brown thing.
@basketballwifetobe: Yeah, also not wanting to go the debate route, but I also disagree. Given a second chance to prove that he's changed? Is that what he was doing when he absolutely lost his shit on GMA and broke a window or something? I just think he's a shit human being. Sure, he can dance, I agree. But I don't think letting him off teh hook or anything or be rewarded after beating the dog shit out of someone is someting I agree with.
@mrsbruff2b: HAHAH awesome and progressive. Oh wow...in Whitney's immortal words "I believe that children are our future"....well, honestly, there are PLENTY of children I hope are not in charge of my future.
@akp0702: Hahaha those were my thoughts as well last night. Nicki Minaj needed to take it down about 100 notches, Chris Brown is pretty douchetastic, and I am perplexed about all those people with giant mouse helmets..
@akp0702: That's fine. I never said he should be rewarded for anything. I just think that he has issues and he needs help for those issues. He's barely 21 years old and for him to behave the way that he has for me it is a sign of a much bigger issue. I don't feel sorry for him, I don't feel sorry for anyone who does what he did.
@basketballwifetobe: No, I didn't mean YOU said he needed to be rewarded. I don't know. Just having him be touted and nominated for a prestigious (or, what once was a prestigious) award just rubs me the wrong way. As far as I'm concerned, since it's not alleged that he beat Rhianna..we all know that for a fact, after that every single person in the music business should have written him off. It just makes me feel gross to know that he's being pranced out onto the grammy stage to sing and dance and have girls fawn over him (not to metnion those awful tweets from teenagers) and then nominated like he's a good human being (which, I know, is not the purpose of the grammys...but I'm starting to go round in circles)...
OK, not going to get into the Chris Brown thing, but those girls on that site made me SO SAD.
Also, what was the deal with dirty looking hair? Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson....BRUSH YOUR HAIR. God, that drove me insane.
Loved Springsteen, JHud, Adele (of course). Sir Paul, My girl Carrie and the Foos though! Although how Dave can justify his rant about "Real music" and then perform with DeadMau5 is beyond me....And speaking of which, HOW DOES HE BREATHE IN THAT HELMET?!!
akp0702: I get it. I totally get it and I agree. Not gonna turn this into a debate I'm just not sure when we draw the line. As far as the tweets about he could beat them etc from the girls, that is just disgusting. They have some issues too. I don't care how hot a guy is, he is not putting his hands on me. I dont even kid about stuff like that.
@akp0702: I think a lot of the "defence" comes from what basketballwifetobe mentioned before, how a lot of guys get away with it. Sometimes people bring it back to a race issue. And although I agree that race could be a factor why some maybe "harder on him", the solution is not to give Chris Brown a break but to crack down harder on him and OTHERS as well.
We've all got to start somewhere and for me, the anger comes from letting Chris Brown more off the hook than setting the bar and showingothers who have been violent against their partners that it is no tolerated.
The important thing here is to spotlight Chris Brown's actions as unacceptable and continue to emphasize it this way. All while continuing to NOT let Rihanna become the poster child for domestic abuse. The focus should NOT be on Rihanna, what she may or my not have done but on Chris Brown.
@sara_tiara: that helmet SERIOUSLY freaked me out. i guess i just don't get that electronic stuff. totally not appealing...more appalling to me.
@basketballwifetobe: Yeah, again, another really sad realization that this people are going to run our country(ies) some day. So sick. What are their parents teaching them??
