And what's even worse, is when I went into the kitchen at work the culprit was talking about how his meal is taking 8 minutes to cook, and that it's some sort of weird chinese dumpling lean cuisine...yeah, THAT'S MINE! And I don't have the guts to say anything to him
I'm just venting. I'm not even that hungry, I just hate when people do crap like that!
Was your name on it? It doesn't always help, but sometimes people are less fearless about stealing food when there's a name on it. Either way, what a jerk & maybe he'll burn his tongue on it or something. :)
that happens at my work ALL the time. so annoying! people even go in and take ONE bite and then put it back. like I'd want to eat it after that??
Ugh that's really annoying!! What I would do is go to your office manager and ask her to send out an email to the entire floor reminding everyone that the food in the fridge is NOT for everyone, people bring it in for themselves. He honestly probably thought it was just fair game, like the coffee and milk or something. Or if not, he'll at least be called out and embarrased.
@Lillindy: Yeah, I've been putting my name on them ever since one day I wasn't sure which one was mine. It's just so rude!
And like, I bring my lunch because I can't afford to buy it every day. The guy who stole it can definitely afford to buy his lunches (he's pretty high up). He was probably just too lazy to go anywhere to get lunch.
grrrrrrrrr
@moderndaisy: Oh no, he's been here long enough to know that it isn't his! Especially with MANDA MACK written right across the cooking directions in green ink (I don't like plain colored pens).
He has some nerves! I would have to tell him something like, "I wonder what happened to my Lean Cuisine?" or "I had a meal like that in the freezer. I wonder where it is?" or "That was mine!"
@moderndaisy: Like, what would you even say..."Excuse me, that lunch you're complaining about cooking, yeah, it's mine. It actually had my name right where you would have read that it has to be cooked for 8 minutes on 50% power, so, thanks for cooking my lunch for me!" hahahaha
I don't know how you would even go about confronting the food thief. Although this would probably make me mad (alright almost cry if I was really hungry), the fact that he was complaining about how long it was taking to cook, like he brought it, is quite amusing.
I don't understand why you find it embarrassing to call out someone who basically just stole from you.
@MandaMack: I would totally say that! Haha. It sucks when that happens, though. Maybe he'll burn his tongue on it, like pps said. ;)
@Olivejuice: Because he's been here forever and is considerably high up in the company and I've been here since May which is when I graduated from college, lol...what would you say to him?
@Olivejuice: and he didn't "basically" steal from me...he 100% stole from me! That's my $2.55 lean cuisine! hahaha
That totally sucks-- what a jerk.
You should've said, "Oh, thanks for cooking my lunch for me!" LOL
What a jerk! I would have went right up to the microwave, grabbed it out and said, "oh thanks I was just about to heat up MY lunch."
@moderndaisy: Totally agree! You don't have to rat him out, but I would mention it so that maybe he is reminded of what a ding-dong he is. You are after all out of a lunch now.
In the end, however, I like to believe in a little thing called karma...
I'd take him aside and say "hey, I didn't want to say this before since I didn't want to embarrass you in front of everyone, but that was my lunch for today. So you know for the future, I write my name on them so they don't get confused with anyone else's (then show him the giant green letters on the now discarded carton)." That outta do it.
Also, consider doing the "sad bunny face". Possibly with tears.
ETA: if that doesn't work, start stealing his office supplies. First the stapler, then the pen holder (not the pens, just the pen holder), etc. When he comes by to ask about said items, just say "no, this is MY _____".
And if I were going to steal a lunch, I wouldn't do it during peak lunch-heating time. Because odds are that person is going to come for it...know what I mean?
I HATE it when that happens!!!!! I always would write my name on things before I would put them in the fridge but that STILL didnt stop some girls. I never stole anyones food...except some cookies if someone brought them in ;)
@MandaMack: I know, I would have totally kept quiet and left, it's so awkward! Like, "Give me back my lunch?" Maybe from now on if you don't already then keep it in a freezer bag with your name on it? You could even keep a mini padlock on so no one can even open it!
@moderndaisy: its a sad, sad day when you have to start locking up your lean cuisine in the office freezer...hahahahahahahahahah
We have signs all over our work pantries that taking another person's food is grounds for termination! So people don't take the food, but some have been known to throw out real, ceramic dishes that were soaking in the sink for a few hours (not days, hours). Every so often there's an admonishing blurb in the company newsletter reminding people to be courteous.
I would let it slide this time, as the best time to confront someone about something like this is when it happens, but if this occurs again, you need to confront this guy about it. I understand that him being higher up in the company can be intimidating, but that does not give him the right to steal your food. Dig the box out of the trash can if you have to, and say "see my name right here?" yeah def mine, not yours. . .
@MandaMack: Hahaha you just made me laugh out loud at work!! That is very true though, I mean I thought most of the salaried employees were over the age of 12?
@chelseamorning: Why would you do that? Like I think it's rude to steal a lunch but at least there's a purpose (to eat the lunch). Why on earth would someone throw away a dish?
@ktisthatbees: If this becomes a regular occurence I'm definitely going to have to say something! I can't afford to feed us both, and if I was actually hungry right now I'd be sooooooo cranky!
Go figure... the guy who can afford to buy lunch everyday is stealing lunch from subordinates...
@BayStateBride: AND complaining about the stolen lunch.
...I'm going to get a twinky, I get to cheat on my diet when someone steals my low-cal lunch...
wait...so you SAW the guy heating up your food, and you didnt say anything????
I seriously can't believe that some one would think it's ok to take someones lunch! I might be able to understand taking someones coffee cup out of the cabinet, taking someone's pen or taking a handful of tissues from someones office but seriously their lunch?! What would happen if the person whos lunch he stole was hypoglycemic or diabetic and they needed that lunch to keep them from getting sick.
I would go to your office manager right now and ask them to send out a memo saying because of missing food, everyone must now put their names on their food and do not eat food that is not their property.
You should start coughing and act like you're really sick. Maybe next time he'll think before eating someone else's food :P.
@alishadhs4: Yup, I froze. I don't know if you read the whole thread but he's pretty high up in the organization whereas I am not...I don't even know what I would have said to him.
He was having issues confusing me an another younger girl that works here this past summer, now that I'm thinking about it, he probably didn't even realize it my my name on the lunch because I just colored my hair from blond to deep brown this weekend. And yes, he is that thick headed. The only thing in common the girl he would confuse me with was we were females under the age of 30 with blonde hair. She's almost a foot shorter then me.
ditto with alishadhs4: Time to grow a set and speak to him.
If you didn't want to accuse him of stealing your lunch outright, you could have taken the passive aggressive route and said "Hey you must have picked up the wrong lunch. I had one exactly like that. Let's check the box where I wrote my name over top of the cooking instructions."
I don't care if he's higher-up in the company than you are. You HAVE to say something.
@MissHelen: I like your idea. That's EXACTLY what she should say!
@julies1949: Like I said, I froze. Would have loved to have come up with some reason to call him out on it, but, I froze... And would you really want to accuse someone who's higher up in the company than your boss of stealing? That just doesn't seem like a good idea.
@mandamack, i read the thread but i just cant believe you didn't say anything! I would have definately said something. That is STEALING which is against company policy.
I would have said (in a nice tone) excuse me, im so sorry, but i brought that lunch today and was looking forward to eating it!
