I don’t see mother/son dances very often at weddings, but I think it’s only fair if I get to have a father/daughter dance. FI is worried that it’ll be boring for guests to have to sit through 2 dances, so we were thinking of having both at the same time.
Only problem with that is we can’t think of a song that would be appropriate for both. I was thinking about “The Way You Look Tonight” but it may be too cheesy for FI and his mom. I suppose we could do 2 separate dances and have the songs shortened in half, but depending on the songs, I think it may be odd to have them abruptly fade out.
We used Rascal Flatts – My Wish for both dances at the same time. And in the middle, we had the DJ invite everyone up to join so we didn’t have to continue to sway aroudn for the full time and bore everyone to death.
Wedding: July 2014 - The Meeting House/DoubleTree by Hilton
My dad picked “the Way You Look Tonight” for our dance and my husband’s mom picked “I Hope You Dance” for the mother/son dance – those both might be too cheesy for your FI, but they are pretty gender neutral! We had both songs shortened to around 2-2:30 min and it was a fine amount of time. The Way You Look Tonight is hard to fade out, but our DJ did a good job picking the right spot – if you go with that, I can give you the exact time he faded it!
We also did our dances towards the end of dinner, so guests were still eating/talking and weren’t paying full attention, which I think helped with the boredom factor.
Thank you for all the awesome suggestions! I’m passing these along to FI and FMIL to see what they think, but I think I’m leaning between Child of Mine and My Life. Both sets of parents love those artists and they’re meaningful songs without being too sappy or cheesy.
