You want the magnet to include the location, date, and your names.  Everything else goes with the invitation.

Our said “Peach and Plum, June 22, 2013” on the front, and on the back, “Save the Date!  Peach Acid and Plum Pie are getting married!  June 22, 2013.  Specific Location in Town, State.”

@marinesfiance:  If you’re going the magnet route, nothing else is necessary in the envelope, as long as you get all the key info PP mentioned (names, the date, the specific city/town and something that mentions “formal invitation to follow”, like you have). FWIW, we’ve received many magnet STDs, but only one that had a magnet with a postcard, and it was for the venue itself, it didn’t have anything that was wedding-specific. Hope that helps!

ETA: as far as timing goes, I think 9-12 months out is good for the STD; I’d go closer to 12 if there are a lot of out of town guests, and closer to 9 if most people are close by. We sent ours out 9.5 months before and the majority of our guests are within 25-50 miles from our venue. However, we made sure to tell those who are further away the date as soon as we found out. 🙂

@marinesfiance:  Yeah, then 12 months would be perfect! We just recently sent ours out and it was sooo exciting to ge it done! It was one of those steps that really made it feel official for me…like once it officially goes out on paper, you’re really on your way! In the meantime, try to keep busy with engagement pics, that’s what I did! 🙂

I like Zazzle for those magnet cards! My sis used it. I used etsy, but did not use magnets.

@marinesfiance:  Oh yeah, I totally did the same! I researched everything for the engagement pics, from locations to outfits to poses, right down to the best nail polish colors, lol! But it really helped to feel like we were at least doing something (we will have a 21 month engagement, and sometimes it feels like forever!). Anyways, since we had a long time to work on it, I ended up setting up a picnic scene at a vineyard and we ended up loving the pics! It’s nice to have extra time to plan! 🙂
