@Future_Mrs_Price:  Hi Fellow Bee! I moved to the Orlando area about 3 years ago from NJ and I love it here. Before moving, I would visit a friend of mine(also a NJ transplant) in Tampa every year. I would say the biggest difference between the two is be prepared for all the shopping/food places due to the tourism for Disney, etc. The tolls on the highways are higher the closer you get to the theme parks but depending on where you move to in Orlando you may be able to find alternative routes and avoid them. I find Orlando to be a much busier area than Tampa but the towns just outside of Orlando can be your typical suburbs and quieter. I would guestimate we have about the same number of snowbirds here as in Tampa so it’s busier at certain times of the year. If you have more specific questions, I can try my best to help with my experience of living here so far! Good Luck with his transfer and your move!

@Future_Mrs_Price:  Oh Maitland is very nice! I actually live in Winter Park but closer to the Casselberry/Altamonte Springs side so I am familiar with those! In fact, my FI and I almost bought a house in Altamonte Springs. We bought in Winter Park to be closer to his job and my job allows me to work from home so it worked out well.

As for local restaurants/business, I find it to be high volume tourist-like closer to the theme parks in Orlando and in the suburbs I can say we have our share of local restaurants/businesses. They tend to be scattered and not in one central location but I like the idea of exploring and finding them as we go since moving here.

Rentals, yes there are a LOT of those in this area. The market took that hit so people do not want to sell their houses just yet and offer them for rent. I live on a cul-de-sac with about 10 houses, four are rentals and they do very well. The one house next door is a rental, the owners had to move out of state so they set it up with a property manager. The lawn care is included in the rent but it’s still low for a 3 bedroom house with a fenced yard.

We wanted to be centrally located to the tourism, to downtown Orlando and to the coasts as well. I really appreciate being just outside of Orlando to enjoy those things it offers but also keep to our quiet neighborhood in the suburbs! I would agree with your point that this area is a good value. 🙂
