I need some suggestions for new music!
Generally speaking, I pretty much stick to a couple genres: country primarily, 70’s and southern rock. I go through the occasional pop ( Ok, maybe just Justin Timberlake) phases, but they never last too long. However; I am so bored with the current slew of country artists out on mainstream radio. Also, I live in the Nashville area, so I get my FILL of country music/living. But I am just tired of the same people over and over again. So, who are some new/underground/lesser known artists that you like and would suggest? My taste runs fairly traditional. I like:
George Strait- “80’s/90’s” artist like Alan Jackson, Garth, Tracey Lawrence, etc.
Some of the classics- Waylon, Willie, Christopherson.
As far as the newer ones, I like Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, some Jason Aldean, Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, Kacey Musgraves and the Pistol Annies.
But I looooooothe the new country “boy band” era. And that seems to totally dominate everything right now! I love country music, so I hate that half of the time I am listening to the radio, I change the station to something else because I cannot stand half of the crap on it! So Bees, I implore you to help me find some fresh new music.

Can you look to some of the older stuff from current artists? My taste is similar to yours and I like early Tim McGraw and Toby Keith, though maybe you cover them with 80s/90s artists. He wasn’t really big but Jamey Johnson has a song called “In Color” that I love. Um, maybe Montgomery Gentry or Big and Rich? I’m also a fan of Josh Turner who kind of bridges the gap between new school and old school. None of these are particularly underground. Oh! But for women, look up Elizabeth Cook, she’s a lot like Miranda Lambert but never got big, I really like her song “Sometimes It Takes Balls To Be A Woman”

Have you tried plugging a few example artists or songs into Pandora and having them create a custom radio station for you? I’ve found that’s a great way to find new artists in the same vein as ones I already like. I used to be a lot more into country when I lived in Texas, but since I moved to a part of CA where they don’t have a country station, I haven’t kept up with it as much!

crayfish: true, Pandora is a good suggestion
luluvohn: I do like all of the artist you have mentioned, but I hadn’t heard of Elizabeth Cook so I will have to check her out!

Mrs_Amanda: I am with you! I am so over bands like Georgia Florida Line & some of the other poppy sounding people like Luke Bryan. Their music all just sounds the same. While I like some of their songs, it gets to be monotonous!
I like Blake Shelton, but I think he is played too much. Especially when artists like Craig Morgan are very under rated.
What about Eli Young? I like them very much. Try Slacker Radio’s stations Outlaw Country, Red Dirt Road, Alt. Country, & Americana. I think they have a good variety.
Have you seen this?

A couple of my favourites:
Not Ready To Make Nice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pojL_35QlSI
Travelin’ Soldier https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbfgxznPmZM
Also Trisha Yearwood’s song How Do I Live is really good too, here’s the video (the movie clips in it are from Con Air) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFnD3uwKHag
Edit: The Dixie Chicks split a couple of years ago because the lead singer wanted to focus on her family, so the other two created a band called the Court Yard Hounds, I have their CDs too but not quite as good as all three of them together. Then the lead singer created her own album called Mother, also not as good when it is just her. Her name is Natalie Maines.

MrsUPS: thanks I will have to check out slacker radio!
Jacqui90: DC’s are ok to me, I like some of their stuff, not all.

Do you watch Nashville? I’m actually not a huge country music fan, but I LOVE the music in that show. There are some amazing gems. You can look up whole albums on Spotify and give it a shot! My fav songs from the show are “I’m a Girl,” “Wrong Song,” “I Aint Leaving Without Your Love,” “Telescope,” “Don’t Put Dirt On My Grave” …. yeah, I have a problem 😛

Mrs_Amanda: Blake Shelton and Dierks Bentley are currently my faves. Along with Jason Alden and Luke Bryan. 🙂

Check this out and let me know what you think. It is just one of their songs but they are not very well known and feel like that southern rock, they totally look like they came out of the 70’s! I love this song. The name of the band is Blackberry Smoke.
Also Easton Corbin is a newer artist but has that George Straight sound. AND HE IS HANDSOME 🙂 And HANDS DOWN you have to like Jamie Johnson. He is just the all around old-school singer kinda guy. I can’t get enough of him.
That is a link of him singing some George Jones songs

MrsUPS: I am with you, Craig Morgain is AMAZING! Rain for the Roses is my favorite song by him and I will for sure be playing that one at my wedding.

I’ve been loving Maggie Rose. I bought her whole album and have been listening to it non-stop for literally weeks.
Dierks Bentley is my absolute favorite male country singer. I’m pretty sure I love every single one of his songs.

Jacqui90: The Dixie Chicks broke up because their political views caused them to lose their fan base because most people who listen to country are very conservative. Many people who listened to them before they broke up quit once they spoke out the way they did.
The sisters sound good but, because of their association with Maines, they will never have a hit.
StephieBee: Agreed about the music on there. The Alt Country on Slacker plays a lot of their songs.

Look up Texas country artists. I’m bad with remembering names, but I can give you a few and if you put them in pandora, you’ll get a bunch of other good ones. Granger Smith, Clint Black, the Judd’s, The Randy Rogers Band…can’t think of more at the moment (bad with names lol) but just put them in Pandora or google them and you’ll get a lot of new but classic-sounding country.

I would wander through Google play, look up the artists you like and it had similar artists listed. Madison Rising is good, you might check them out. You might like cross Canadian ragweed, they are a mix of Southern rock and country.
