A girl I went to high school with recently posted a note on her facebook with some of her thoughts on fitness and wellness, and there was something that just really got to me.
She came right out and said that, “Sorry ladies, but a size 10 or above is not healthy. It is grossly obese and unhealthy. Go get some help.”
It was right then that I wished I could reach right through my screen and throttle her. It really peeved me off since in high school I was a size 10, sometimes a 12. I weighed 145-150 pounds, and I’m 5’8″ and was curvy and muscular. I’ve gone up a few sizes and gained some weight, but this size that she thinks is so grotesquely obese is my healthy size. I know it’s kind of a dumb thing to get annoyed by, but geez!
Are people really that ignorant when it comes to peoples bodies and sizes? Women can be healthy and fit at a variety of weights and sizes, so why don’t some people understand that?
UGH. Okay, I’m done!

Rude!!!!!! That’s ridiculous that she would post something like that on facebook1

Obese is 20% or more overweight. “Fat” is an opinion, but obese is a clearly defined thing. Maybe she should take a basic middle school health class so that when she is being bitchy and judgmental, she can be at least as informed as a normal 13 year old.

An old friend of mine was visiting from my hometown this week and she’s always been very thin and stands at 5’9. I’ve gained about 30 lbs in the last 7 years and she wouldn’t make references to me directly, but would always brought up large people. Complete strangers walking down the street and she would make a comment about their weight. I have no idea if it was because she noticed how much weight I gained and was unsure of how to react, or if she really has a problem with bigger people. In any case, I think some people just have no filter when it comes to things like this, especially when they’ve never been more than a size 5/6.
Ignore her. You said she was a girl you went to high school with, so it sounds like she isn’t or wasn’t ever a good friend. She obviously doesn’t know where to draw the line, and doesn’t care about hurting people’s feelings.

Wow, she clearly doesn’t understand body types! I’m a 2-4, and there are women who are a size 10 and thinner than I am just because of our respective body types.

Size 8-10 is my healthy size too. I’m 5’7 and usually hover around 140lbs.

I do not agree with your friend. She is narrow minded and has this idea of what the perfect body is, and she would be disgusted with more than half the people, men as well as women, in America. There is an ideal weight for every height and body type, and you do not have to be a super model to look and feel beautiful. What a load of garbage.

Glad to see so many people who understand that different people of all different weights and sizes can be healthy! 🙂
To be perfectly honest, I shouldn’t be shocked seeing something like this from her. She pretty much starved herself throughout high school (even when she was pregnant) and seriously looks down on people who eat more than a lettuce leaf and a carrot stick everyday.
She took her post down, after another girl (who is a softball player, and quite tall and muscular) just totally layed into her. Hah, yay!

Well, she obviously isn’t a doctor so don’t worry about her! She’s probably just self conscious.

Its silly. Lets face it, if you are really short and a size 10 you might be grossly overweight. If you are really tall, and a size 10 you might be super skinny. Healthy is a whole other story, and can’t really be determined by the tag in your pants. She just doesn’t have a clue! Everyone is just so different and its impossible to make that statement true based on pants size.

It is very silly!
I think I was more bothered by how someone could be so off as to even think that something of that nature is even remotely correct. :/

Glad to hear somebody gave her a dose of Truth! Sounds like SHE is the unhealthy one, with some terribly wrong ideas about healthy female bodies. Yikes. It’s almost kind of sad. So sorry that you had to deal with her, though, I hope you didn’t let it bother you too much.

some people suck. honestly. i was once told that i should hire a personal trainer because i’m 5-10 pounds over the limit of ‘normal’ and ‘overweight’. according to who? the trainer at the gym asked me why i was even there because i was fine.
there is nothing wrong with a size ten. yeesh.

Size 10 would be my IDEAL size. I was TINY at a 12. Some people just don’t get it. That’s why there are other ways – besides sizes and weights – to judge if you’re obese. Height, muscules, and bones make a difference. When I was a 12 I could SEE and FEEL my hip bones at all times. They WERE THAT WIDE! I held up my friend’s 6’s to me and they were smaller side to side than I am hip-to-hip! People are insane. Don’t let it get to you.

Sounds like someone with an eating disorder of some sort. Or possibly she’s just really stupid.
