We are definitely doing an “iPod”, self-DJ’ed reception. All of the recent weddings I’ve been to had them and they were great. We’ve started working on the playlist now, a year in advance, and are sure this is the way we want to go. We have one of my brothers keeping an eye on the playlist and tech stuff, another brother emcee’ing, and a day-of coordinator to keep the reception timeline flowing.
Do any Bees have advice about renting and using a sound system? I’ve heard back from one place that rents sound system equipment and I’m trying to get more quotes. What questions do I need to ask?

How large is your reception going to be?
A friend of mine bought the Block Rocker from Sams club and everything seemed to work great.

Our guest list is about 70.
The space isn’t huge, either – it’s an older building that has dining on one side of the room, a large staircase in the middle, and reception/dance area on the other side of the staircase.
We are looking to rent 2 large speakers, a mixer with microphone, and a laptop connector.

I’m thinking about doing our own playlist too. We are having mostly family there anyways and it would be fun to do all of our own music. I was looking into a mixer and speakers too. I need help and opinions on it too.

I’ve gotten three quotes now, all for the same basic equipment:
- Two speakers large enough for my reception space/70 people
- Wireless microphone
- Laptop connector
The quotes range from $300 to $700 – ugh! When they are that different, it’s hard to tell who really knows what they’re doing.
The $700 quote was actually only $150 for the equipment itself, but they said they “have” to charge 4 hours of labor for setup and breakdown EACH, even though it’ll really be more like 4 hours labor total.

@jd2012: My cousin just got married and hired a DJ, but still has his own playlist. The charge was $400. The DJ emcee’d and had all the equipment. He basically just made sure nothing happened to the music. Try finding someone to do that? This was in the Chicago area, so things are pricey here and they still managed to find him.
