ok, so far, my wedding planning is going well.  my fiance and i sat down and hammered out all the details.  we came up with this menu for the reception~

    meat:  meatloaf/chicken (baked and fried)

sides:  baked mac n cheese/string beans/corn/mashed potatoes/rice (of course, gravy)

    salads:  toss/macaroni salad/potato salad

    bread:  hawaiian rolls

for dessert, i was thinking about banana pudding, but i want some more options.

and don't laugh at my menu y'all.  we are pure southerners!  Laughing

    Peach cobbler?

Says the Jersey girl.  I just hate seeing an unanswered thread so I thought I would take a stab at it.

    Chocolate pecan pie

    Lemon pound cake

    Collard/turnip greens

Sounds yummy, from one southerner to another. :p

Sounds delicious to me. Plus, it's familiar comfort food so most people will be more inclined to enjoy it rather than fancy foods.

As for desserts, quite a few people actually don't like bananas. Some dessert options include peach cobbler, pecan pie, red velvet cake.

A nice sour cream pound cake, which stays fresh and moist for long times.

A variety of fruit toppings, and whipped cream to adorn the top.

Mmmm that menu makes my mouth water!! Yum!

I second the vote for red velvet cake! It's the perfect southern dessert...and it's not quite as taste specific as pecan pie/peach cobbler, etc. (although those are great options too! haha)

I'd do biscuits instead of hawaiian rolls!

Pie buffet!! Lay 'em all out and let them go at it.

Buscuits or corn bread would be a must! I love the idea of a pie buffett... my FI is a banana pudding lover but I love myself some pies. I love it that you're stickin to your roots! We were just in Tuscaloosa and had the best bbq ever, my FI and I looked at eachother and said "are ribs too messy for a reception?" haha...

    You're a southerner and there's no PIE?   :p

Come on, you need some pie.  Pecan and Sweet Potato at least.  Maybe a Lemon chess.

I'm also going to agree with the cobblers and biscuits/corn bread suggestions.

I'm with you all on the pie and cornbread.  Definite must.  My family always makes all sorts of casseroles too.  They serve lots of people, they can be pre-made, and put in the oven when you're read for them.  Some of my favs are crawfish casserole and spaghetti casserole.  YUM.

Can  I pipe in?  I LOVE peach cobbler a la mode, or even a warm pecan pie a la mode!

Cornbread is good (if it's done right lol!!) I'm a huge fan of yeast rolls.

Oooh yes cornbread served with the collard greens!

What about fried okra?  That's a southern staple!

And for the mac n cheese make sure it's the Southern Living kind!  That's like the best macaroni n cheese you'd get at a sunday picnic after church.

I have to agree that this sounds sooo yummy! And you need biscuits and cornbread, not rolls...come on it's the south. And you definitely gotta include fried okra or collard greens. As for dessert, go with the pound cake...with different toppings (fruit, whipped cream, etc.). It's light and most everyone likes it.

Shrimp & grits, sweet potato ham biscuits... if you do banana pudding do paula deen's banana pudding, it's killer. And I vote pecan pie too!

Or fried chicken, some sort of fried fish? I would start thinking of your favorite southern restaurants (I'm thinking like high cotton in Charleston/greenville sc type restaurants) and see what kind of food is on the menu!

We're running into a banana problem with dessert too - I'd be all about some cobbler!  (I'm from ATL and FH is from NOLA so we're trying to work in some southern food flare too...your menu sounds delicious!)

Sweet tea. It's not a food, but it's a drink. And it's totally necessary. And Mint Juleps. And lemonaid. Sorry, I think I'm thirsty right now!

How about a grits bar? Like a baked-potato bar, but with grits served in cute glasses?
