Soooo, I have my dress fitting in a month.  I have a trumpet dress.  There is NO forgiveness.  I love my curves but I need some kind of shapewear to smooth me out from just below my chest to my thighs (since its a trumpet you really can't do anything but the full body kind).  I can't find shapewear that will smooth without basically flattening the curves.  Does that make sense?  Any suggestions?

I'm in the same boat as you, girl ;) I think I'm going with one from Spanx that I tried on at Dillards. I too have a very form fitting dress and I'm more than terrified of how I'm going to look on "the day." A lady where I work out at highly suggested the same spanx that I tried on - she wore it too and said she felt very comfortable and lean. I was holding out because of the price, but I think I'll bite the bullet and go for it. It'd be one less thing to worry about, right?!

This one, but won't use the bra attachment (I'm getting cups sewn in):

I was just on their site, I saw that too!  I'll spend the dinero if it give me the desired effect!  When you tried it on, did it minimize without making you look like a 4x4?  Lol.

Umm, actually no! Ha ;) In fact, the girl that was helping me complimented on my booty - it was definitely still there!! I just loved how it totally smoothed out my mid section and for me that's my biggest worry area. So having the booty present is only a plus ;)

Lol, good stuff!  Yeah, I know I wear a size 6 but I have a lotta booty so it would be hard to stick it all into what is essentially a sausage casing!  I'm gonna go find that one and try it on too, thanks :)

I think Spanx are a better choice than Assets. I bought some Assets awhile back, and the bottom part of one leg area bunched funny and looked like it was made poorly. The Spanx are pricier, but I think the quality is totally worth it.

Just make sure whatever it is that it's seamless, I have a pair of spanks, which look great under something that hides the seam,  but I would be afraid that the large seam running up the middle would be obvious on some things- I have one dress that is some sort of spandexy super sexy tightness and the spanks actually make it look worse because of the seam.

The picture that ilikekennedy posted would be a great choice!

How much do Spanx and the like really help? I want to trim like 2 inches off my figure, and I never feel like shapewear does much besides smoothing things out. Are my expectations just unrealistic?

I bought the VS brand of "Spanx" (not really called Spanx, they have their own brand) and they worked really well!  I didn't buy them to trim inches off, just to smooth over my problem areas when wearing a tight dress.  They were definitely more affordable than the Spanx brand.

@ilikekennedy- I don't know the style number but its at David's Bridal!  Its so funny that I ended up with a dress from there because I told myself I wouldn't shop there.  But it worked out!

@what2bee- good point, you're so right.  I definitely don't want anyone to see the seams, ah!

@marjojo- I don't know if shapewear takes off inches but I know there are some out there that say they do!
