Sparkliness of moissanite vs. diamond– have you seen both IRL?

@Creiddylad:  They both sparkle, but Moissy’s shoot off more rainbows. A high quality diamond of course shoots off rainbows as well, but a Moissy’s rainbows can sometimes overpower the sparkle from the facets themselves. It’s simply a matter of personal preference. Some prefer a “louder” stone and some don’t.

@Creiddylad: There is a lady that comes into “my” Starbucks every so often that has a larger moissanite and it is quite obvious that it is not a diamond. The color is off, a bit warmish, and it reflect light differently in the store. Being that I have a diamond it is easy for me to compare when she is standing right next to me.

I have both in my rings (moissy center, diamond sidestones) and I prefer the sparkle of the moissy (more brilliance and fire).  It really comes down to preference though.  If possible, I would encourage you to view both side by side to see which you like more.

@Creiddylad:  I purchased my ring from a small local jeweler.  Most chain stores won’t carry moissanites because diamonds are much more profitable, so it doesn’t make sense for them to sell moissys as well.

EDIT: You could always order a moissanite and bring it to the store with you.  I think moissaniteco has a 30 return policy.

I have both in my ring as well, moissy centre and diamonds in my halo and band.  Honestly, I prefere the moissanite over the diamonds in every way.  The moissanite sparkle is crazy, especially in low lighting and direct sunlight.  It shoots crazy rainbows, but that’s what I love about it. For some, it may be too much though. I love everything and anything to do with sparkles though, so it’s perfect for me.  I also feel as if my moissanite is whiter than my (F-G coloured) diamonds.

Both are gorgeous though, you can’t go wrong!

They sparkle differently. I’m surprised you didn’t notice this? Moissanite has more fire (colored light return), even more than CZ, and it’s more pinpointy. It also sort of has that effect that people describe as “holographic” or “kaleidoscopic”.

Diamond has more of a balance of white and colored light return, and the flashes tend to be “fatter.” It also has a lot of white-vs.-steely scintillation which is what gives it that sense of depth. Maybe this coud be called “checkerboad-y.”

In terms of overall, how much light is returned back to the eye, moissanite returns more light, at least in certain conditions. If diamonds are extremely active, moissanite is frenetic (and with a different behavior). But then, other times moissanite is dim when a diamond is not. I believe this is part of what moissanite owners refer to as “moodiness” (the other part is how visible the base color will be under different lighting conditions).

I’ve never seen a moissy, but I’d love to see one!  Diamonds reflect lots of rainbows, and what almost looks like fire in the sunlight (varies from blue to orange).

I have a high quality diamond and it sparkles like a high quality diamond. I really don’t understand the argument that moissanites are more sparkly or whatever. Like at some point you just have to admit that both are sparkly stones lol.

And my diamond throws a ton of rainbows… I think all high quality diamonds do.

I guess what I am saying is that I wouldn’t buy one over the other on the sparkle factor alone unless you can only afford to buy a poor quality diamond…

I have nothing against moissanite and actually am considering getting a pink one as an RHR in the future.  But I definitely prefer the fire and sparkliness of a excellent cut and high clarity diamond — I’m sorry but moissys cannot compare.  I LOVE tons of sparkle but from what I’ve seen of moissys the way it sparkles/fire makes it look really fake, like costume jewelry except it has more fire (esp for the bigger stones).  For colored moissys it looks fine because the color offsets the rainbows better, but for clear/white ones it’s too “in your face.”

Since you’re getting a smaller stone, either moissy or diamond will look beautiful.  I’ve found any moissy bigger than 1 ct to be too much.

Can’t wait to see what you get!  Happy decision making 🙂
