We had 5 toasts (each 2 minutes long tops) spread out over the course of the meal, so that it wasn't a long gamut of talking at once. Our toasts were Parents of the Bride, Father of the Groom, Best Man, one of my MOH, and then a thank you from us as a couple.
Personally, I'd be kind of surprised if the toasts/speeches at a wedding lasted as long as 30 minutes. I haven't been to a wedding that had that many speeches, I guess. At ours, we kept it under 10-15 minutes. The Best Man and MOH (my sister) gave speeches and my BIL gave a blessing (which ended up being much longer than I had hoped!) Neither of our parents spoke, although we paid for the wedding ourseleves, so they weren't technically hosts. We didn't do any sort of "welcome to the family" speeches and my husband and I didn't talk at all. I guess the two of spoke at the rehearsal dinner to introduce and thank everyone, so I didn't think it was necessary at the actual wedding reception.
We had the MOH, Best Man and my dad give speeches and that was it. All in all it lasted about 15 minutes (from beginning to end).
30 mins is way too long for speeches! You are going to have a lot of complaints if the speeches take up that much of the night. It is typical to have a welcome toast which is usually no longer than 2 minutes then later on in the evening the best man/moh speeches which should also be around 2-5max minutes each. It is a little unusual for the bride and or groom to make a speech or toast, although I have been seeing grooms do this lately. Be careful though - the worst thing I've ever seen at a wedding was the grooms speech. He basically insulted his bride saying she has never been very pretty and that he 'knew' her answer would be yes since she had been hounding him for years to propose. Ouch.
We're having the Best Man, MOH and my Dad do speeches. Then my FI and I will give a thank you. I'm hoping it lasts between 10-15 minutes tops!
We're trying to have our speeches last no longer than 10 minutes... 15 minutes tops! In that time we will probably have speeches by (1) my parents (2) FI's mom & stepdad (3) FI's dad? (4) best man (5) MOH. So that's 2 minutes per speech -- and we won't be too upset if they run over by a minute. I'm thinking that we will have speeches during the salad course, so that the rest of our guest will have something light to munch on while they listen to the speeches :-)
