We had special lighting, and it had such a huge impact that I can’t imagine not having it! The impact to cost ratio is way lower than with other decor items. I think if you had great lighting, you could definitely cut back other places.

We had uplighting and it was so worth it.  The color just enveloped the room.  It was perfect.

What I did to help me with the expense was I paid $100-200 each month leading up to wedding to the lighting company so I didn’t have to shell out $800 all at once since money was tight due to other wedding expenses.

We will have special lighting at our reception. I am an event planner so I personally know the impact lighting makes – it sets the tone more than nice linens or flowers ever could. However, it’s not in everyone’s budget. Prices vary by city, as does everything, so I won’t go into how much we’re spending. But the basics are:

    Uplighting (led’s or cans)

Pinspotting (for each table – usually the most costly)

Wash (general room color or dance floor)

Intelligent lighting (this requires a computer operator, but allows the colors to change..obviously the most expensive)

My budget is tight too…so even though I would like it all, I will probably be limited to general uplighting and washes, but I still think it’s worth it.

We are not having extra lighting because we really don’t think it would be worth it, for us; plus it would be an added expense, and our venue really doesn’t need them. I think it really depends on your venue and the look you are going for.

We paid extra and it was worth it.  BUT I can probably say that had we not had it, we wouldn’t know it was missing.  After having it, the pictures are just amazing.

I really really wanted uplighting/pin spot lighting too but then after i found out how much it would cost (between $1,000-1500) and that  quote was just for “decent” lighting, I changed my mind.  I mean sure it will look amazing, but I realized it would be better to spend that money on better food and a better DJ or an even a better honeymoon!  I had to rationalize with myself…I know it gives a good color to the room, but honestly…wouldnt your guests prefer to have something else more entertaining than extra lighting…you could use that money for some other fun wedding stuff that will be more memorable…for what its worth, just see if its in your budget…maybe you can find other ways to decorate with candles or just some other creative less expensive option

I think it depends on the room and what your financial position is.  I do think lighting is a nice touch, but if you are struggling with finances, I don’t think it’s essential.

I went back and forth on this and found a vendor whose work I really liked.  It so happened that they were lighting my venue a few months prior to my wedding, so I got a sneak peak of what it would look like.  What I learned is that I didn’t really care for the effect in our room – so, I crossed it off the list.

See if you can see what uplighting looks at your venue… that may help you decide if you want it or not.

We got so lucky- our DJ said he would throw in the uplighting for free and it looked AMAZING! $800.00 for a DJ and uplighting. He was awesome!
