As a spin off to the fashion faux pas thread, what is something you love seeing on other people but just cannot pull off yourself?
For me it's that super classic Ralph Lauren cable-knit sweater over a button down shirt look. The Ralph Lauren models (and many others) always look so chic and classic... I always look lumpy and bulky and the sleeves always bunch up and the sweater never fits right over the shirt.
So, what's the one look you love but just can't pull off?
Leggings - they just make my legs look ridiculously thin and short, and they just emphasise EVERYTHING! Why do we wear these things?
Red hair. (Hope that counts.) I have always loved natural red hair. But I have freckles & the one time I tried blonde it washed me out. So I never tried red. :/
I would love to be able to pull off a maxi skirt and chambray top, but the maxi skirt allllways makes me look like I have these awful saddlebags. Not cute!
Umm .... everything. Every look I see that I love, never seems to look quite right on me.
Probably why I stick to jeans and basic tops for weekends and slacks and cardigans / sweaters for work.
Yes!!!!! I never look sleek and put together when I try that either :( Boo.
I always wish I could pull off the skinny jeans with heels thing and still look put together but it's just not meant to be for me and my body type.
.
Sweater dresses. I have an abnormally long torso so they fit more like shirts :( I have yet to find one long enough that I could wear with leggings or tights.

Baby doll dresses. They look so chic on someone with no boobs, yet on me with a DDD chest, they look... maternity. Sadface.
Skinny jeans. My hips and thighs are just too wide, in proportion with my calves and ankles.
Skinny jeans. And sweater dresses with boots. I'm short so the dresses (and most dresses) hit at an awkward spot on my legs and with boots it gives me nice chunky-looking legs.
For me it's any hair colour other than red. I'm a natural redhead and have the skin that goes along with that. So basically, I can't pull off dark hair because to quote my hairdresser, it would make me look dead. I can't pull of blond hair because it would wash me out even more than I already am.
@Running Elley: Ooo i LOVE that look. Doesn't work on me either. My hips are just too wide. If I want to wear skinny jeans it HAS to be with boots.
@cyndistar3: Those make me look lumpy too... hmm.. maybe *I'm* the lumpy one... And every one I've tried on was very itchy.
I also cannot pull off the leggins. Makes me sad, because it looks really cute on some girls.
Big sunglasses. They look cute on other people but I think I look like a bug.
@KatNYC2011:Yepp! I CANNOT wear them without boots and I have wide, "child-bearing" hips lol.
Oh another one is blazers! I always lust over them but I haven't found one that works in outfits the way I want it to or looks the way that I want it to. I haven't given up on them yet though!
Tops like this with those stretchy bands or gathers around the bottom. They look great on my stick-thin straight up and down friends with no boobs, but I'm an hourglass and they just make me look pregnant, lol.

Maxi dresses. Every Spring/ Summer I look to buy one but I never do because I think it just looks "off" on me...sad face.
@Running Elley: I love blazers too. I have one I wore for e-pics that I think looked ok though:

@KatNYC2011:Oh that is so cute! Do you have any pictures from straight on? Where did you get it? It looks like just the right length...it's when they get too long that I have issues I think because it hits at a weird place on me.
Got it at anthropologie. Below is photo from when i bought it. It was displayed with the dress, but they didn't work together on me:
@KatNYC2011: I have actually found some really flattering non itching ones but they just aren't long enough so I just buy them and wear them as shirts with jeans and what not :/
@KatNYC2011:Ohhhh I think I remember you posting about that actually. Thanks! I'm off to stalk their website now.
I really love Helmut Lang's aesthetic - very modern and chic, but most of the boxy cuts just make me look preggers. Big boobs are hard to dress!
@cyndistar3: I bet they are still cute like that!
I may try again now that I'm living in "foggy london town" and it's getting cold.
Tube tops (are they still around? - I feel like I remember seeing them 5 year ago). Just doesn't work with small boobs.
Really strapless anything is not a good idea on me.
@Running Elley: same here! skinnies were NOT made for me. and it's such a shame because they look so cute on everyone else. haha
@Molly929: They don't work with big boobs either. I could never pull those off!
Layered looks are horrible on my short and VERY endowed upperbody!
But I love the look!
Any type of skirt. I look ridiculous. Actually, I'm not stylish at all. All looks I like I don't think I can pull off.
So many looks that have been mentioned... babydolls, layers, empire waist... basically anything that adds bulk to my 36Fs. :(
Cute mini-dresses... I have stick legs and no waist, so I look like a rectangle on toothpicks in them. But they look so fun and cute! I'm always the one in the long skirt :(

Herve Leger (or similar bandage type) dresses... they seem to look stunning on models, not so much on me.
pretty much any skirt of any kind. the worst part of my body is my waist (thank you 9lb 3oz child for that) and i always feell ike things sit weird on my waist and hips. it might just be me because when friends have gone shopping with me and i try something on they tell me it looks fine but i FEEL IT!!!!! i know it looks ridiculous!!!! so i dont wear skirts. also i ahve funky calves. this brings me too my next one....boots. like the ones that go up to your knee. I cannot wear them unless they are wide width ones. its always been that way, even as a teen. i was a gymnast and as such have always had monster legs. muscular yes, but huge.
another vote for blazers! they just do not look good on my body, i have big boobs and they just make me look super boxy. i just found one that actually does look okay, and thank goodness because i'm a grad student ta-ing for the first time this semester and they make you look so much more "professory"-y!
also crewneck necklines make me look boxy, and v-necks can look too slutty on me--almost all my tops are scoop necks. ahh the difficulties of shopping...!
ETA: OH and dress pants/slacks. i have zero butt and they just always look weird. i almost always wear skirts or dresses when i need to look professional
Skinny/Peg jeans and cute hige heels. Idk I'm just too tall or big for it. I feel like only really petite girls look cute in that outfit.
