Thanks for this post! Mr. Big loves to bike and has gotten me into to spinning (in the hopes of holding up my end of the bargain when we are on our tandem bike). I find it is the one intense cardio that doesn't flare up my knee pain (skiing injury) and am so glad to hear of your results -- definitely encourages me to stick with it!
I'm trying my very first spinning class next week! I've never done it before, and I'm a little nervous. My wedding is in 5 weeks, and my workouts don't focus much on cardio, so I want to up the cardio to help me lose the last 5 pounds.
Wish me luck!
I'm so excited to try spinning, but am afraid I'll look ridiculous and be completely lost the first class. I think it would be great for my ass though ;) so I'm thinking I just need to jump in.
spinning is AMAZING! it's the only workout where i've pushed myself so hard i've thrown up!! i'm addicted.
I love spinning! I used to go pretty regularly, and in my first few months I lost flab and got very toned. I also plateaued, but mixing up spinning with other cardio and with weights really helps. Spinning is such an exhilirating workout!
AnnaCruz, can I ask where you made the full body avatar that shows the different heights/weights on your Hotty Body blog? So cool! I want to play with it!
I've done it about 3 times. It's a great workout but I always feel like I want to die. Its only when its done that I am happy I took the class! Hahaha, I do have to get back into it though because its the only thing that will get rid of these thighs!
Oh man...my first class was a doozy!! I sat in back because I was a bit nervous, but I made it through the whole thing! I couldn't walk normal for a week, but I made it through the class! Lol
Hahaha, yea I wanted to die during my first class too! I took a break from spinning today and ran...without music. Its so hard for me to run without music so I started singing in my head. That lasted for 15 minutes :)
@ AnnaCruz - I second MsWhiskarsLouise - Where did you get those height/weight avatars? They're so neat!
I love spinning! I did it on and off for the last 2 winters. Now we're living in Cali, so the weather is nice enough to actually bike outside year round, and I'm saving money by not joining a gym. Still, I miss the intensity of spinning class. I feel like I have to ride my road bike for twice as long to get the same workout as I get in one spinning class.
MsWhiskersLouise and Toothfairyb, here's the link to the avatars. They're fun...I started making avatars of my friends too hahaha.
I take spinning every week! The class is a great workout and I love what it's done for my tush and legs!
Ooh thanks AnnaCruz!
I never mentioned before - but I adore my spinning classes too :)
Exactly what is spinning? I get that it's a bike... but what do you do? How do you get these amazing results???
Spinning 101
The Scoop on Spinning
Spinning was created by world-class cyclist "Jonny G." Goldberg as a convenient and quick way to train for races. In 1989, he and John Baudhuin opened the first spinning center in Santa Monica, California and then developed a program to certify other spinning instructors. Curious to know about this spinning thing? The following info will help you decide if it's for you:
What is it? Spinning is an aerobic exercise that takes place on a specially designed stationary bicycle called (obviously enough) a spinning bike. As you pedal, motivating music plays and the instructor talks you through a visualization of an outdoor cycling workout: "You're going up a long hill now, you can't see the top yet.…" During the class you vary your pace -- sometimes pedaling as fast as you can, other times cranking up the tension and pedaling slowly from a standing position. This helps you to focus inwardly and work on your mind as well as your body.
Why we love it: Spinning burns serious calories (about 450 in 45 minutes) and offers an awesome aerobic workout that makes your heart pump fast. It also tones your quadriceps (front thigh muscles) and outer thigh muscles like nobody's business! Because you stay in one place with the same basic movement throughout, Spinning doesn't involve a lot of coordination; it's easier to concentrate on your form than in other types of aerobic classes. And although you follow the general instructions of the spinning teacher, you are in control when it comes to your pace. You can finish a spin class, regardless of your fitness level, simply by adjusting your pace or the tension knob on the bike.
It's hard at first, but after a couple classes, it becomes a drug. Love that spinning high! :)
Man I'm so scared to go back to spin after my puking moment. Luckily I made it to the bathroom but I think it was just "too intense" to start with. I think I'm sticking with Zumba til I'm in better shape:)
LeahNHealth, I want to try Zumba soon! Must be fun. I'd also like to ballroom dance my fat off :) Need to find a ballroom instructor though :/
I am a spinning instructor and to take your workout to the next level I would suggest adding resistance. So, go to a class, do what the instructor says to do, but at a bit of a higher resistance (for example, sprint with an added turn)
I lovelovelove spinning! I just go a heart rate monitor for christmas and burned 720 calories in my last class!
I have never tried spinning.. but it sounds like fun. Are there any "at home" bikes and programs you can buy?
I love spinning! I've started trying to step up my spin classes to 2x a week. I nearly passed out/threw up in class this morning, not sure why, but that hasn't happened before. I have recently noticed that my thighs and hips are getting more toned, which is a nice benefit.
Does anyone own spinning shoes or cycling shoes that they use for spin class? I really want to buy a pair but I can't decide between mountain bike shoes or something that will be a little more useful if I ever actually add clipless pedals to my road bike...
@Osuchicka: I only work out like once a week, so needless to say, my endurance is not that great. Would you say that spinning classes would be too intense for someone like me who has a low endurance & who doesn't work out often?
@AnnieAAA: I started with spinning after not working out for a LONG time and I survived. I think the key is just to listen to your body and not to try to keep up with everyone in the class. Obviously, you want to push yourself and work out hard (it's hard not to in spin, honestly) but if you're doing something and you really can't do it, don't.
My first month at spin there were times when I was at a lower resistance than others or had to sit (still pedaling, of course) while others were doing stand-up/sit-down moves. But, my endurance quickly built up. There were older people and even a pregnant woman in my class, so you should totally be able to do it!
Wow, congrats! So encouraging, makes me want to try spinning! :)
I've never really tried spinning, but I do know about working out-related plateaus... usually they have to do with putting too much emphasis on cardio & neglecting strength training. Have you tried working with weights?
Good luck!
AnnaCruz-I am a DC bride too who has been very lax on working out. I'm about your height and current weight and would LOVE to lose ten pounds and tone up (last year I put on about 10 lbs. from late hours at the office and poor food choices). This is inspiring me for my August wedding!
@ Arancia: Here's a bike that comes with 4 DVDs: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001Q3KOFQ/ref=asc_df_B001Q3KOFQ984016?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=googlecom09c9-20&linkCode=asn&creative=380341&creativeASIN=B001Q3KOFQ
@ Edb: I don't own cycling shoes (hoping to get some this christmas!), but here's more info: http://www.bicycleapparel.com/shoes.html
@ Miss Politico: Oh late night snacking is something I'm still working on! I have a chocolate chip cookie 2 feet away from me and I need to lock it up in a safe before I devour it! Although I work out, my bad diet gets to me. www.shapefit.com helped me eat a little healthier. Congrats on your engagement and good luck!!! You can do it!
@CurlyDreamer: Thanks for that advice, now I really want to try it! Esp if pregnant women can do it, whats my excuse! LOL!
I was spinning regularly while the hubs was in Iraq but since the wedding I've totally slacked on it! It is really difficult in the beginning but when you build endurance and your body shows you it can hang it's an awesome feeling! :)
Can you simulate spin class with a regular exercise bike? I ride my exercise bike every now and then, but I don't feel like I get a whole lot out of it - mostly just a sore butt.
I would think you could simulate a spin class on a regular bike on your own. I actually asked my spin instructor to email me a copy of a couple of her workouts/playlists so I can simulate them at home.

Does anyone spin on a regular basis? I found it very tough at first, but after spinning for 3 years (on and off sadly, but now def on!) I'm finally loving it. I started at 123lbs (5'2) 2 months ago, and now 114! Yay :) Trying to get to 100-105, but I think I've reached a plateau with spinning. Any suggestions, spinning stories, or encouragement...? :) 10 pounds to goooo...I really want this!!!
Oh and here's my blog if anyone wants to yell at me for not working out...
