I feel like any symptoms that expel bodily fluids into the air and could result in someone coming into contact with these airborne droplets = contagious.
@BayStateBride: That's how I feel about it too. But I've heard people say (not sure why though, I'm no doctor) that the pre-cold symptoms are the most contagious. I'd like to know why if anyone knows the answer?
@.twist.: I think they mean that you are contagious before you even show/feel symptoms, so you end up going about your business without being cautious about spreading germs. That's how I interpreted it anyways...
I was always told that you are most likely contagious if you are running a fever (and often not contagious if you aren't). So I tend to consider myself contagious when I have a fever.
@Mrs.KMM: Yep. Fever means contagious.
Obviously coughing and sneezing all over the place spreads germs, but you can spread germs through bodily fluids- saliva, runny nose, even by rubbing your eye.
Not a medical person, but I've been sick more in the first 20 years of my life than most people are in 80 years :P
I don't completely understand 'contagious symptoms'. If you have a virus, you are contagious. You can be a carrier without even showing symptoms. If you do have a cold or a flu, obviously coughing will help spread the virus.
You can also have symptoms (ie. a cough) but not be contagious if it's allergies, asthma, or irritation.
@AB Bride: Yea, I guess I was questioning what "symptoms" (or stages of being sick) do people believe they are contagious at. Poorly worded on my part. Obviously if you have a virus you're contagious.
@AB Bride: Yeah I don't really get it either. I've also heard that you are most contagious before you start to show symptoms but I wonder how much of that is because you aren't taking the same precautions you would if you had symptoms (antibiotics, more frequent hand-washing, etc.)
I was JUST thinking about this today, because I feel like hell. I consider ANY fever, runny nose, etc. to be "contagious" symptoms. The entire office has some sort of a bug, and I think I've finally caught it.
@.twist.: Thanks for clarifying!
As soon as I think I have a virus I consider myself to be contagious. I will admit I don't always know right at the start though, because I get migraines, have bad asthma and allergies and have chronic joint pain. I don't think I've ever had the flu without knowing as soon as symptoms started though, those symptoms usually start off bad enough that I know right away I'm sick. It's the minor colds that are trickier.

I was just reading the "how sick do you have to be" thread and was wondering what people consider contagious symptoms!
I feel like if i'm coughing all over everything and my nose is running, that's contagious. I've always wondered because I've heard different things.
What about you?
