Do you or your SO use smokeless tobacco products? Would that be a deal breaker? FI dips, and it bothers me only because it is not good for his health, but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. Curious to other peopls thoughts/views!

I think it'd be a deal breaker for me. I hate to say it, but it's the truth.

My FI was a social smoker when we started dating, he has since stopped. Dip, to me, is not my cup of tea. I can't say whether or not it would be a deal breaker though! I love my FI more than there are stars in the sky, so if he took it up, I would have to really pursuade him not to. I would probably put a power point presentation together about why NOT to, knowing me! He has told me he doesn't like it nor will he start, so I can't 100% relate.

@jessiesbabe: no, smokeless tobacco like chew or dip. Most people you see will have some of it in their front lip and spit into a bottle or a can ( or on the ground) and it comes in a round circular can or a pouch.

This would be a dealbreaker. DHs old roommate used to dip and I would find disgusting gatorade bottles everywhere. DH is a social smoker and that I can tolerate but dip is a whole 'nother level of gross.

@TheJeanses2012: I know what you mean! He knows it isn't my most favorite habit of his... but, when I first met him he did it so it isn't something he just picked up along the way and it has always been something I have associated with him!

No, neither of us smoke.  I came from a non-smoking family, his parents and siblings all smoke, so I'm glad he's the only smart one!

I know people who do it, and while it's totally their choice, I'm just not sure it's a habit I could live with. So I guess I should just be happy that I don't have to deal with that with my husband. That would make answering this question a lot more difficult. :)

@bells: it is the same as chewing tobacco ( I think, haha)... maybe we just call it "dip" for short here. Although I do know that not all tobacco is the same, for example: my FI doesn't  "dip" chewing tobacco.. he thinks it is gross ( oh the irony)

@Catherine: maybe it is more of a regional thing... we are located in TN.  I am not from here, but am from a southern state and most guys I know DO dip. Not every single one of course, but a good many!

Maybe that is why it didn't become a huge deal breaker for me... just used to it. Although- the bottles and cans everywhere I could definitely do without!

This would be an absolute dealbreaker for me. I find it utterly revolting. Almost more so that cigarettes.

FI and I both smoke hookah with our friends, but smoking cigarettes is yucky to both of us. I guess if I had to choose though, I'd so rather he smoked cigarettes than chew tobacco. My brother "dips" and it's so gross to me that he's constantly spitting into cans and bottles. That would be a huge deal breaker for me.

It was a total dealbreaker for me in one relationship. But my Fiance doesn't smoke/chew so that is all the better! I HATE it. So gross.

Definite deal breaker...I think that is so gross, personally. But I am also extremely anti any sort of tobacco product, and smoking cigarettes, whether regularly or socially, would also be a deal breaker.

@swanks4tw: See, I would much rather the dipping than smoking... smoke all in the car, hair, clothes= ew.  For my FI to dip it doesn't effect me as much IMO, as if he was a smoker... which, interestingly enough, WOULD be a deal breaker for me haha

Once FI stopped smoking after seeing it literally kill my grandmother.. he picked up chewing.. I HATE it!.. he promises all the time to quit, but it's been almost a year, and he's still making no progress =-/ but, it's better than smoking.. IMO.. not that it's healthier, but I don't have to smell it and it doesn't make me cough up my lungs, like being around him, while smoking does..

I did tell him though, when we have kids, he HAS to stop.. when i was little, my uncle chewed, and I can't tell you how many times I grabbed his "spit" cup, and thought it was soda.. *PUKE*

Personally, I find "dipping" to be disgusting.  It would absolutely be a dealbreaker to me.

ETA: Smoking would be a deal breaker to me too.  But I find "dip" even worse than smoking.

I had no idea people still chewed tobacco!  I've never seen anyone do it before.

    Neither one of us smoke.

I lived with a smoker once.  I would never do it again.

@MapleBecky: no joke, we went to the fair a few weekends ago a few counties over and there was this old man, in an electric wheelchair with a huge Folgers coffee can full of tobacco, resting on his giant gut, and he had his pipe hanging out of the side of his mouth. He was wheeling himself around and stuffing his pipe every few minutes. Scary stuff happens in backwoods TN let me tell you!

Smoking would be a deal breaker for me, but my FI dips occasionally when he's at a game, or playing tigerwoods on a friday with his boys... it bothers me and i have some strict rules in place: he's not allowed to do it around me, hes never allowed to do it in front of our children (when we have them) and he has to brush his teeth after he's done. he's def already broken one of these (in front of me... thought he was being slick...i'm not an idiot) but I sent him gross pictures of what would happen to him if he kept it up he could get mouth cancer and loose his jaw...

He does quite regularly, and I don't like it. He used to smoke cigarettes pretty heavily, but really cut back since we got together. The dipping was a replacement for the smoking, which I can tolerate a little better because at least it doesn't make him smell like smoke, but my biggest concern is the health aspect. It used to be something that would be a deal-breaker for me, but I just had to suck it up because he's "The One" despite having a nicotine addiction, you know? But, he's my guy, and I love him. I just support his trying to quit (and give him a little grief every now and then for being gross). :)

I think it definitely is a regional thing, because it is everywhere down south! I've seen so many different types of people who dip since coming down here, whereas, it was a rare thing for anyone to do up north...

ETA: DH gets the "pouches" so that means he doesn't have a lot of loose "dip" in his mouth, it's all contained in a little pouch, which makes it only slightly less gross. But still, ick... haha

Nope, I hate "chew", it's nasty!

DH does smoke the occasional cigar, I don't mind that. But daily use of cigarettes or chew I would hate.

My dad has been chewing tobacco since he was 14. It's disgusting and I have terrible memories of accidentily spilling his spit cup. GROSS. I told my fiance in the very beginning that chewing would be a problem for me and he always asks before. He probably does it once a year when he's out on his grandma's farm or with his brother who chews often but always with my permission. That's the only thing in our entire relationship that I make him run by me. (Chew = dipping, I think we use both terms around here) He always uses Snuff though which is a little pouch so it's not loosely in your lip and a little less gross/dangerous. It's sad but I'm just waiting for the day my dad tells me he has cancer in his mouth. A kid from my high school just had to have part of his cheek removed because of chewing.

I dated a guy who chewed, but he mostly swallowed.  Totally bad for you....don't ask me why. It was a macho thing.  It wasn't a dealbreaker, but it was gross.
