People don't flush tampons?!?!  I've always flushed all of my tampons (unless there is a specific sign saying not to) and have never had an issue.  Every woman in my family does the same.  The bathrooms in the sorority house full of women never had an issue with all the tampons.

ETA: And trust me, there was definitely some cycle sync-ing in that house.

    NEVER at home. NEVER EVER.

But if I'm in a public bathroom, or at work... yeah I do.

I have been trained to never flush anything but TP. After growing up in the country with a septic that would have been disastrous.

I can't imagine it being good for any plumbing system or toiket. I really dont want to have to call my landlord "Excuse me. I flushed a tampon and its stuck. Can you come fish it out?"  hehe

Ummm I always flush the part that goes inside lol. I never flush the applicator or the wrapper. I never even thought about it? Maybe I shouldn't flush them, this is the first I've ever heard about not flushing!

I flush mine. Never clogged before. However, at places with sign not to flush, I try to remember not to flush. Sometimes I accidentally flush when there are signs stating not to flush; it's hard to break the habit.

Um, sorry to be so graphic, but if poo can make it down with no issues (most of the time) then I'm not worried about my tampon clogging anything.

Never have, never will.  I never knew people flushed them until talking to my roommate in college.  She was grossed out that I threw mine away, and I explained that it's NO different than throwing a pad away, and I wouldn't flush those either!! ;-)

@highwire: I think its because people worry that the tampon will expand (absorbency) and clog the pipes, I could be wrong though

I never flush them. poop breaks down and is a bit more "moldable." Tampons seem like they'd get stuck somewhere because they wouldn't be able to...make the turn.

I used to, but then FI said I should NOT at his house cuz he doesn't want to deal with clogged pipes. So I researched it a bit, and it sounded like the sewage people HATE dealing with tampons. And, since I realized that they don't just "disappear," that I guess I shouldn't flush them...

I was always told tampons were okay to flush, pads aren't. I've acted accordingly.

    Sooo a clogging story.

I was living in another country in a 3 story conneceted house with several housemates. One of the girls flushed hers and it clogged the system (about 5 months into our stay) and it backed up and the entire backyard was a cess pool GROSS.

However as a result we found out two people were hooking up due to the floating condoms :)- busted!  That was good for a month of ribbing and jokes.

On a ship you don't flush anything but TP and waste.  I learned that growing up too (because I had to learn to use tampons by reading the package, that says "Do Not Flush" all over it).  So I always wrap them in TP and throw them away.

Gross story: Whenever there are new girls on a ship they ALWAYS flush their tampons the first AF visit, and they ALWAYS back up the sewage lines.  It's pretty easy to tell who did it, it's the newest girl.  New girls hate to sort their sanitary items, and on a ship you have to sort in three bins: paper, plastic, and metal.  Tampons are for the most part easy-paper.  But pads are a mix of paper and plastic and you are supposed to pull them apart and sort them.  There is some poor schmuck in the garbage room going through ALL the garbage who has to touch this stuff, and you can imagine HE doesn't want to be doing it for you.  Smart women know to hold their sanitary trash until the next port visit!

When I first started using tampons I read all of the instructions on the packaging very carefully.  It says they are flushable.  Of course the wrapper and applicator aren't, but the actual tampon should be fine.

@JoJo Bananas: LOL, I haven't read a tampon package since I was 13 so it has probably changed, but it's a habit I haven't lost.

Never.  I work in a water/wastewater plant, and we advise everyone to only flush waste and toilet paper.  For one, most tampons expand when soaked with liquid, making it very possible that the tampon could clog plumbing, both at private residents and at the wastewater plant.  Secondly, tampons and things of that nature do not break down, which means sewer treatment plants usually have to skim this type of waste and dispose of it in another way (usually either burning or sending to a landfill).  It's not really pleasant to think about, but someone is dealing with everything you send down the toilet, and these types of items make their jobs a lot more difficult.

I was a lifelong flusher and never had any problems and no one ever told me differently.

Until about 8 years ago.  I had just moved into a brand new home and after about 3 months, the toilet in the masterbath began routinely clogging.  Finally, it clogged to the point where I had to call RotoRooter.  The plumber came and worked his magic.  Then he said to me "Would you like to see what the problem was?"  To satisfy my curiousity, I responded: "Sure."  He proceeded to lead me outside the front yard and there, displayed for the entire neighborhood to see, was a line of tampons snaked across my lawn.  "There's your problem!" he proclaimed.  And then proceeded to lecture me about flushing them.  I was mortified.  And will never be a flusher again!

@JoJo Bananas:  some say they are flushable, some say not to flush, but your wastewater plant will always give you the same advice - Don't flush!

I have never once in my life flushed a tampon. I lived in an apt with a roommate right out of college and our landlord b*tched about the plumber having to come and unclog the pipes. My roommate claimed she didn't flush her tampons... liar

I flush them everytime. Unless there's a sign that says not to... like my work does.

    But pretty much, everytime.

I'm completely toilet flushing phobic! I barely have the guts to flush poop. I love airport bathrooms and public bathrooms with big strong flushers.

For most of my life involving periods, I have been wrapping and disposing of the tampons.

As for me, I'm mostly a flusher, but after these stories I believe I will start throwing them out. Yikes.

There was no option for "I don't use them", so I didn't answer.

I have been using the Diva Cup for about 5 years.  I swear by it.  The idea of my feminine products getting thrown in a landfill is horrifying and I have saved a ton of money over the years since the Diva cup lasts 10 years.  I will never use anything disposable again!

@MrsMaine:Just wrap them up in toilet paper and take out the trash as soon as your cycle is over, you'll never even see them!

Better in your garbage can now than stuck in your pipes or floating in your yard later! lol
