SPINOFF of the "Can you get a home for 125K in your area" thread!
Curious to see the prices of homes/ types of homes of other home-owning bees!
How much was your home and what kind of home is it? Also, what country/city are you located in?
18 years ago we paid $153,000 for a 3 bedroom raised bungalow in Ontario Canada. It's valued at approx. $250,000 now
The market is really good in Texas, specifically Dallas. We bought our home for under 250K. It is a 4 bedroom, 2 bath, almost 2300 square foot home with a pool and hotub.
$225,000 for a 3 bed, 2 bath about 20 miles outside Chicago. ETA- it was a foreclosure
My 2 BR/2BA condo was 250K in a suburb of Washington, DC. I am renting it out now and living in FI's semi-detached house which was in the high 400's when he bought it but is now valued in the upper 500's.
205K. 3 bed 1 bath 1200sqft rowhome in philadelphia (not center city)
Our home is an older home, built in 1978. We moved in just over a year ago. 3 bed, 2 bath cost us 325k.
380k. 3 Bed, 1.5 Bath about 1500 sq ft (ex basement & attic) fully detached in Northern NJ
ETA: built in 1941 and my taxes are outrageous ;-)
We found a 2-bedroom condo with a parking space we liked here in the closest suburb of NYC. It went for $650,000 and was about 1280 square feet. It was not in a luxury building, nor did it have a lot of amenities or a doorman. That's just standard pricing around these parts.
Edited to say: we didn't get it! 10 couples bid on it, and we were outbid. It went for $35,000 over asking price. Ouch!
We paid $185,000 for a 3 br/2ba ranch near Chicago. It was a foreclosure though, and the previous sale price was around $450,000 so I'd say we got a really good deal :)
Our house was $159,000 for a 3 bed/3 bath, 2,000 square foot, 2 car garage home.
295k For a 3(+1)bedroom 2 1/2 bath split level with a finished basement on the island of montreal.
FI and I just bought a home. The original owners walked away from it and so it's bank owned. They were asking $88,000. We got it for $82,500.
It's about 1500 sq ft, two big bedrooms, one bathroom. Nice red-wood kitchen with a beautiful bar front, laminate everywhere, beautiful bathroom with a glass stall shower with jets etc.!
The home he currently owns is worth about $145k. It's 2,000 sq ft, three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, very beautiful.
Our home is a 2,000 sq ft, 3 bed, 2.5 bath single-family home in downtown Houston, and Mr. W got it for $250k. That is very low for inner Houston, especially for a new home with all the works (granite, stainless appliances, hardwood floors, high ceilings, crown molding, etc.). I am getting antsy about moving to another neighborhood where most of our friends live, where there are more restaurants, neighborhood bars, and grocery stores within walking distance. So we are looking at selling soon, but we don't want to buy any higher than $300k because we want to always be able to afford our mortgage on one of our incomes alone - that way if either of us were to be laid off, or just unhappy at work, or if I wanted to stay home with future kids, that gives us total flexibility.
$110k for a 4-bed, 2-bath 2400 sq ft home with a 2-car garage. We did spend about $15k doing renovations (hardwood floors, new doors, new kitchen, etc)
Bought an all brick 2000-square foot 4 bedroom/2 bath single family home with an inground pool on a nice sized lot in 2004 for about $150,000. Suburb of Dallas. The house was also custom-built by the original owners (as were all of the homes in my neighborhood), so no two houses are alike. I love that - no cookie cutter.
Now, my home was priced well, but my property taxes are higher than some. But that's ok, because I live in a great county. Also, my house was less expensive than some because our suburb is further out, so more driving.
We bought a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom rambler build in 1977, but updated for 195,000 about a year ago. But, it is a 2 acre lot on a river. It also only has electric baseboard heat and no AC, we heat with wood. It had been on the market for almost a year. The start price was 250,000... we got a killer deal, because the appraisal came back quite a bit higher than we bought for. WE LOVE IT! :) Oh yeah, northern suburb of Minneapolis.
180K for a 2400 sq. feet, 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, single family home in NE Ohio.
Just bought a house for 160k 2 bed 1 bath on 50ac. I'm about 40min from a close city.
We have a single family home and I believe when my husband bought it (about 8 years ago) it was valued at $150-160k, with some updating the house is now valued at $180k. Though, looking at what is available in that range with a little effort on landscaping, I think we could actually get close to $200k for it if we sold.
I should also say, we have a 3 bedroom, two full bath house, eat-in kitchen (no dining room), small living room with fireplace, separate large utility room and attached garage and a separate car port in the back, and an in-ground pool.
$105K for a halfplex midcentury modern style home in Sacramento, CA. 2 bed, 2 bath, about 1200 sq ft. It was seriously beat up when he bought it! He bought at the bottom of the market - now they're going for about $140K. We'll be here a few years and hope to sell for $160K before we buy our next home.
We got a great deal on our house in 2010 - $250k, 3br 2ba just outside Seattle. We put about $35k into to before we moved in though.
$150k, 3 bed, 2.5 bath single family home (1900 sq ft) in city limits. It takes my FI less than 15 mins to drive to work.
140K. 3 bedrooms, 3.5 bath. I bought it as a foreclosure and fixed it up a bit and it now appraises for 215k. It's a great first house for the DH and I.
I don't own it but the house we live in that my SO bought is a 1900 sq. ft. 3 bedroom 2 bath home in Denham Springs, LA and he paid $165,000.
New home owner here as well!
$158,000 for a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom 2200 sq.ft. semi detached in New Brunswick, Canada. 5 min drive to downtown.
Last year, $230k for a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath. It is about 2.600 SF. We could have gotten a new build for less but in a less desirable area to us.
$145k for a 3 br 2 bath single family home in Abilene, TX. The house is only 6 years old and beautifully finished. Two car garage, large fenced yard, fireplace.
@Petite_Fraise: We bought our home 2 years ago and was listed at 450K wayyy over our budget, but because the owners were going through a nasty divorce and the house was the only thing keeping them together, we negotiated and got the price down to 320K...it took a while for them to accept, but because they were desperate they gave in....our house is a 4 bedroom 3 full bath 2 car attached garage with a vey long driveway and plenty of backyard room for a future pool bi-level home and it was also ready to move in, the schools are one of the best of New Jersey and the beighborhood is quite and clean...love it! oh yeah and the mall is just minutes away :)
End unit townhome 20 minutes NW of Minneapolis in an affluent city. 2 bed, 1.5 bath, 2 car garage and 1600sqft for $165,000.
I have a two bedroom one bath condo, small patio, 965 sq. I paid about 765,000 for it.One deeded parking spot although I rarely use my car maybe once or twice a month. I pay 300 dollar hoh fee. It was actually a great deal for me. The seller was extremely motivated and I think he needed to leave fairly quickly. Because I was the first offer and the house was only on the market for a week.
I could have easily bought a condo for half that price 30 minutes out of the city or maybe in the surrounding neighborhoods. But nothing beats my place. I walk everywhere, Have an easy train ride to work. I think for the time in my life it's so worth it. I haven't decided if I should sell it after I'm married. Either way I love my place.
This thread makes me want to move. I live in the Boston area and it's tough to get 1500 square feet for under $400K. And that's often needing lots of work, old houses. Ugh!
@TwoCityBride: DH and I also live in a condo right downtown that was about that price. We love being central! However, we recently bought a house about 10-15 minutes away from the downtown core and are planning for the big move soon! It will be a brutal change for me to go from city to semi-suburb!
We snuck in and bought our house right before the market here flipped from a buyers market to a sellers market last spring.
We paid $236k for 2300 sqft single family home the was built in 1992. Its now valued at $264k.
Fh and I built a single family home (~2100 square foot, 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath [it has a full bath in the mater 'suite']) in York Haven,York County, Pennsylvania, in North Eastern York school District and we built for just over $195,000.. Our house has since appreciated to over $250,000, and will continue to go up as the development develops.
My parents paid $240,000 (local currency) or USD $40,000, 15 years ago when they bought our home which was pretty standard price back then.
It's now worth approximately USD $800-900,000 with minimal renovations thanks to location and a housing boom in the local economy. I'd say we got a fantastic deal.
