Chores are definitely a sore subject in our house. Fi does all of the "outside stuff" like the yard, garbage, etc. I get stuck with cooking (which I love), dishes (which I hate) and we split up most of the big overall cleaning--I can't stand an icky bathroom.
One thing we don't agree on is how to do dishes. Fi would put everything in the dishwasher if he could. I never grew up with one, so I still wash everything by hand. I hate the film that tupperware gets when you put it in the DW, and I feel like glasses never really get clean, especially if they tip over during the cycle.
How do you wash dishes?
I don't really do dishes. That's one chore I leave to DH (for the most part)! However, we tend to do both. Glass and metal goes in the dishwasher after it's been rinsed. Plastic all gets washed by hand.
I wait until I absolutely have to do them (when we run out of every dish, or it starts to stink, or I need to cook something involved.) Yeah, it is awesome and I love it. Actually I just hate doing dishes.
I took out the dishwasher to make room for a wine fridge, so you can tell which is more important to me.
We put the dishes to soak in super hot water after dinner, then wash and dry them together a bit later .
Everything goes in the DW right away, unless it needs to be soaked. A few things get done by hand...not much...
FI and I both take care of the dishes. He's a Chef and is used to a clean kitchen. He's also good about bringing his dishes into the kitchen. We never go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink except the odd coffee cup or so...
my FI actually lke does dishes.....I HATE doing them! we live in an apartment so everything is pretty small...we pretty much split up everything and and take turns. this house gets pretty messy durig the week because we a pretty much in and out most of the week so whom ever has a day off first gets as much cleaning as him/her can. i was off today and did a serious deep cleaning of our apartment!
I usually make dinner and afterwards I'll run or do some kind of working out and while I'm doing that DH rinses the dishes and puts them in the dishwasher. We don't usually let them pile up very much because it drives me nuts!
How do I do them? With hatred and disgust.
No, but really. :) I voted for the "when you can't see the sink" option. Some get done by hand, but usually only the ones it is necessary to do by hand. Cast iron, for example.
@AmeliaBedelia: I thought you weren't supposed to wash cast iron; how do you clean it?
@Miss Longcoat: Well, you'd have to ask FI to be sure ;) since they are his. But we rinse them and soak them in hot water. I'm not sure if he uses any soap? I know they aren't dishwasher safe.
A combo of "when you can't see the sink" and "hand washing and dishwasher". We share the chore because we both hate it. I handwash things I have only a few of (serving spoons, wooden spoons, measuring cups, cutting boards) because it takes us awhile to get the dishwasher full enough to run and I hate having to dig something out of the dishwasher while I'm in the middle of prep
I don't wash the dishes very often, because I make dinner everyday, so my FI does them. When I do wash the dishes I hand wash like pots and big things and everything else gets rinsed and put in the dishwasher. We wash dishes every night. I cannot go to sleep with a messy kitchen.
I never had a dishwasher growing up, but that means I HATE washing things by hand. I will always rinse and put in the dishwasher.
I had to vote other because you didn't have an option for "wait until you can't see the sink anymore and then stand there puzzled about how to hand wash everything when your sink is full." I grew up always having a dishwasher, this whole poor college student with no dishwasher thing is killing me. Dishes are my least favorite chore. No really, I'd rather clean the toilet.
It depends. Some days I wash and dry right after eating, other days I rinse and leave everything, still other days they don't even make it off the table.
I hate washing dishes sooooo much. I would probably commit a crime to get a dishwasher in my apartment. Not possible at the moment, but soon. Soon.
Right now, since we don't have a dishwasher, everything gets washed by hand. I'm lucky that SO washes the dishes after I cook, but he often lets things pile up for a few days, unfortunately.
Really looking forward to the day we get a dishwasher!
Maybe you just need a different detergent that won't cause the film?
I hate them. I rinse of the dishes after I use them, but they pile up in the sink until I fill the sink and complain while I wash an hour's worth of dishes (we don't have a dishwasher). Thankfully Mr.ND hates laundry as much as I hate dishes, so we'll be able to never do the tasks we hate once we're living together. :-)
We let them pile up until theres no sink and guess what theres no sink left today... ugh. I mostly buy plastic forks and spoons and paper plates though so it's always bowls and cups.
I don't. I cook, he does the dishes.
How does he do the dishes? Immediately and they go into the dishwasher. I hate dirty dishes laying about. We only run the dishwasher about once a week since it is the two of us so it is pretty cost effective.
There are a lot of people in our house right now, so the dishes need to be done at least once a day. DH and I make sure they get down every night before bed. We rinse them off before putting them in the dishwasher.
Our dishwasher started spluging water all over the kitchen last week, and we (I) had to handwash them all every night. By the time we got the new one (4 or 5 days later) I was about ready to just start throwing them away and buying new dishes, lol. But now we have a pretty new one, yay!
It's a combination of hand washing and dishwasher, though I hand wash everything first anyways because our dish washer sucks! I hand wash all dishes that can fit in the dishwasher first and put those in. Then I hand wash all the other dishes the can't fit (like our dinner plates that are too big) or aren't dishwasher safe (like nice wine glasses) and put those on a drying rack. I only ever towel dry something right away if there's no drying rack space left or if I need that dish right then
Depends. On a good day, it gets rinsed and in the dish washer right away. But with a baby things just don't always work that quickly, so sometimes they pile up. We try to have them in the sink no longer than 2 days tops though, and always rinsed, b/c that's just gross.
Everything goes into the DW right away. Our sink is pretty shallow so we tend to be prompt with putting away. I take care of running the DW. My hubby is more of a neat freak so he takes care of washing by hand any pans that can't go in DW or that we need if DW is not run yet. I think we have a win-win here :-)
everything is handwashed because we don't have a dishwasher! it's mostly "pile up and hand wash" ;)
I do both. If there is a lot of dishes, I rinse with hot water and put in dishwasher.
If it's just after one meal when everyone is finished eating, then I just wash by hand.
I usually hand wash every day or two.. then use the dishwasher as the drying rack. There's only two of us, so really only maybe 4 dishes max per day, its faster to just wash them by hand. If I get too lazy and it piles up for 4+ days, then I'll throw it all in the dishwasher. My husband idea of washing dishes would be to let it pile up in the sink until its full and we have no more clean dishes, then load the dishwasher. I cant stand to see them in the sink that long, nor will I run it for like 4 dishes.. even though he would.
We don't have a dish washer in our house. Oh wait, sorry I *AM* the dishwasher, haha :)
I handwash them & I do them when the sink starts getting full. I always rinse them when I put them in the sink. I wish I did them everyday (I do them every few days) but with everything else I have to do cleaning wise I just don't have the energy to do dishes EVERYDAY which is also my least favorite chore.
Neither of us really mind doing dishes. I hate having dishes in the sink though.
We always rinse before putting into the DW. There are quite a few items I don't put in the DW though. Nicer dinnerware, my rice bowls, knives NEVER go in the DW and neither do pots, wine glasses. Those all get hand washed.
I just toss things in the dishwasher. Usually without even rinsing unless they are soup bowls or something that will drip into the dishwasher. I'm super lazy like that. And I love having a dishwasher. When I didn't have a dishwasher in my college apartment, I almost never cooked and only ordered in or went out because I HATE doing dishes.
I do them every couple of days, once they start piling up in the sink. I hate doing dishes, but really I just hate putting away dishes. Therefore, the dishwasher is always full which makes it hard to put the dirty dishes in there instead of the sink.
I can't stand a messy kitchen it gives me anxiety!
Our dishes get rinsed and put in the dishwasher right after eating and then the pots and pans are washed by hand right after dinner!
I grew up with no dishwasher and in all of my post childhood homes\apartments i never had one. I still dont lol. I have no desire for one either. I dont like doing dishes but to me its the norm. I am a freak about keeping the kitchen clean when i cook. I have to clean as i go. so like if im done with a certain dish or utensil it gets washed right then while something is cooking or whatever. I wont sit down for dinner until i have washed every dish that can be washed. That way after dinner all I am left with is any serving dishes and dishes we used to eat off of. I make my son rinse off his own dish (he is six and does a damn good job)and everyone is responsible for cleaning their own spot which includes dishes and wiping the table top. and because i am a freak i have to take a really hot wash towel and go over the entire kitchen surfaces with it after everything is done and put away. so its a team effort and im very methodical about it. but Im a psycho about my house and cleaning habits so ....there ya go :)
We have a dishwasher but dont use it. We wash by hand. Sometimes we wash it immediately or we wash it before the next meal time. Truth be told DH does most of the dishes since I cook the most.
Oh I voted dishwasher for everything but I meant to vote a mixture! Some stuff can't go in there like fragile glasses or wooden servers. Also sometimes it's just quicker to quickly hand wash stuff if you need it again. We run the dishwasher nearly every day cos we cook most of our meals from scratch.
We dont have a dishwasher boo!!! So we wash by hand and have a dishes strainer thing so the dishes can dry then they get put away. When we move though. I am getting a dishwasher!! LOL
Rinsed then put in the dishwasher. Pots and pans are washed by hand.
