After seeing another thread going around about whether or not your FI asked your mom or dad (or both or neither) for permission… I wonder how long it took after those conversations for him to pop the question?
For me it was from Christmas day (he asked my dad) to Jan. 26 (he proposed) — a month.

My DH didn’t ask permission. He asked my dad years ago if he would want him to ask his permission before proposing and my dad laughed and said “please don’t” lol.

Haha – FI lasted exactly 2 days. He bought the ring and it was just burning a hole in his pocket, so he couldn’t wait it out. He told the jeweller he was expecting to propose in April, but he bought the ring Feb 18, asked permission that same night, and proposed on the 20th.

I knew he asked my dad in September because he told me he did (and my mom kept asking if we were officially engaged yet). My fiance and I lived across the country from my parents and he wanted to ask my dad in person while they were visiting us. My fiance actually proposed in June…so that was about 8 months later.

@DeathByDesign: I’ve added a “didn’t ask” option in the poll 🙂 Sorry to leave you out!

My husband (then FI) asked my brother for permission on a Wednesday, my parents for permission two days later on Friday, and then he proposed that same night, mostly because he was afraid my mom would spill the beans somehow, which is pretty likely.

About a year after he was given a family stone from my mother. He obviously had her permission & my father had passed away years before.

@mrsm915: We were in a similar situation (although not quite as long as you), because we don’t live near my parents and DH wanted to ask my dad in person rather than over the phone =) So he asked in May when my parents were here visiting and we got engaged on Labor Day weekend that year – so about 4 months.

FI asked my dad Thursday morning and we went out of town that Friday and he asked that night.

FI asked my parents permission on a Wednesday and proposed on a Saturday!

Ring chosen: Tuesday
Parents visited: Thursday
Ring picked up: Friday morning
Proposal: Friday lunchtime
DH said he doesn’t know how some guys keep the ring for any longer than a day — he was so excited to propose!

One month exactly, and I was dying the entire time. It was more picking up the ring than a permission visit.

- Wedding: June 2012 - Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards
I told my husband that if he asked anyone before he asked me, I’d say no.
BUT, we picked the setting on July 6th. The proposal was on November 26th. He had the ring on numerous occasions between July and November, but no moment seemed right.

I voted right away, but really it was 2.5 days later. I knew he had asked and got the ring, so he did it sooner rather than later since he knew I thought he would wait a while (or at least until we got back home – We were visiting my parents and I didn’t think there was any chance he was going to do it while we were up there!) – I was TOTALLY surprised, despite the fact I had been prancing around the house with the ring on just an hour or two before!

My FI asked my grandfather years before he proposed. I think it was 3 years?
However, it was more of a conversation that went something like, “Hey, I want to marry your granddaughter someday,” followed with “You’re a fine man, that is alright by me,” or so I’m guessing.
