Since we all seem to be talking a lot about guns the last couple of days ….
There seems to be a misconception among the hive that most average citizens who own guns do so simply for protection. Based on the gun owners I know, that just isn’t an accurate picture.
Most of the people I know (my family included) that own guns have them simply as a hobby. They enjoy going to the range and shooting. Some of them choose t oalso hunt for sport. These guns aren’t even stored loaded and are under lock and key so they certainly wouldn’t be of any use for protection.
If you or your family own guns, what is their primary purpose? Sport? Work? A hobby? Or is it truely just protection?

First and foremost, hunting. Then clay shooting, then target shooting. We’d use them for protection against an intruder in our home, or the bear that occasionally visits our greenbin, if needed.
I’m also Canadian though, that’s what most of us own guns for up here I believe.
BIL has a number of handguns though, he’s a handgun instructor and shoots them as a hobby and the gun club.

Why, for the end of the world of course! You think that Zombie apocalypse is going to be some walk in the park??
(and I only wish I was joking…)

I’ll comment based on my IL’s. They own guns for the top 3 reasons on your poll; hunting, collecting and protection. Most of the men in DH’s family hunt (actually everyone except for DH which I’m THRILLED about). My FIL has a few really old guns that he keeps for collecting purposes and he has pistols for protection, even though just about any of the firearms that he has will do the trick.

Hunting for us is not a sport. Nor is it for our families. We hunt to live- to eat healthy, free, organic free range meats- they would cost a fortune to purchase.

FI has purchased 4 guns over the past 7 months or so…at first, I was nervous about having them, but now I appreciate them. He has 2 AR15 rifles, and 2 HK handguns. He bought them because each one has a different purpose-some are long-range, some are designed for more close action, etc… He originially bought one for protection. Over the past 2years or so, there has been a huge increase in violent break ins and home invasions on Long Island. Then, he bought another, and another, and another. He also stocked up on ammo—5k rounds of all kinds of bullets. He is interested in disaster prep too, so maybe that should be an option? When we have a house, I plan on applying for a handgun permit and getting one, just to keep in the house for protection because I don’t feel comfortable holding his-they’re too big and heavy. In spite of living in NY and all of it’s gun control laws, I can’t help thinking that when I have children, if someone breaks in and hurts them….they’re not leaving.

Hmmm, I voted other. We have some type of handgun in my parents’ house (that I’ve never seen out or used) that I assume is for protection, and then we have a rifle, and smaller shotguns/bb guns that are used for……pest control.
Not sure what that would fall under though?

Growing up, the guns were for hunting, now mostly we go to the range. My parents got spinner targets that are super fun and ER have some reactive targets that are battleship games. Much easier with 22 rifles than the 9 mm pistol!!,DH really wants to go hog hunting and learn to bird hunt. Personally I’m okay with “killing” the green plastic gophers that spin when I hit them. Pretty much anytime either of our families get together there is a gun range visit sometime. We also both have dads that were military and shot a lot.

Hobby and to a lesser degree protection. We are not hunters.

DH and I personally own a gun for protection, but we have family/friends who own guns for hunting and sport as well.

Strictly hunting in my house. To quote my lovely FI “I gotta hunt! I have to feed my family!”

Sport, hobby, and protection.
DH hunts. (I hunt once in a while, but I hate the cold and the best pheasant & deer hunting is when it’s cold outside. So it’s usually DH & my dad go hunting, my mom and I stay in where it’s warm.)
I enjoy plinking at the range.
DH & I also both have our CCW permits.

I voted for 4..sorry if that throws off results! DH was in the military and also hunts. We both use them for sport( range, skeet shooting) and we also keep 1 loaded with home defense rounds for protection.

Both protection and for hobby. You need to be proficient at using them, so we practice a lot at the range. Range days are fun.
