So, as long as we’re discussing period-related issues, I have a question. Do you all gain water weight during your period? How much? Does it affect how things fit you? Do you have to wear different sized bras/pants during PMS and your period?
I seem to gain at least 2 pounds from PMS– for the week before and during my period, I feel bloated and utterly disgusting and fat. I am barely 5’1″, so 2-3 pounds is visible and uncomfortable. I weigh 118 lbs (feel/look much better at 110) and that 2 or 3 extra makes me feel awful about how I look. I have trouble keeping with exercise routines because I don’t have much of a routine in my life right now (I’m working and doing an internship for grad school, and taking a summer class, which means that I am in several different places each week and don’t have much of a daily schedule). Blah.
Anyway, there are certain garments (pants especially) that I just can’t wear during that week-10 days. Most of the weight ends up in my tummy, so that makes my pants (many of which are a little too tight already) really uncomfortable. 🙁 I’m small up top and don’t wear cup-size bras, but I definitely find that I need support during that week when the rest of the time I don’t really.
How does this work for you?

I gain about 2-3 pounds as well, but my clothes do still fit with the exception of fitted shirts. I have never had to wear different bras. I do wear “period panties” because I want to be comfortable and they are a littlle bigger but not huge.

I was just about to post something similiar! Mine is due tomorrow and I feel like crap today. I’m so bloated it hurts so bad and my boobs are so much bigger than normal that my shirt is stretched. It happens every single month. Ugh.
I don’t wear anything special though. My period is half a day of medium flow, the rest of the day is super light, then spotting for 1-2 days after that and then it’s over. I just wish it hurt less!

Sometimes I’ll gain as much as five pounds. It’s miserable. Nothing fits and I’m hot and don’t want to wear anything confining anyway. I usually go up a size in pants for that week. I do have a shirt I notice that I wear almost every period. It has a built in tight fitting layer and the outer layer is more flowy. It keeps me pulled in, but not in an umcomfotable way.

I don’t actually gain weight but I still feel super bloated!
I think it has something to do with the amount of sodium in your diet because I will have the bloats if I eat lots of lentil soup pre period!

Yeah… sometimes I gain 5-6lbs! I’m only 4’10” so it is definitely noitceable! Ugh, I dread it. If i don’t eat ANY salty food and drink lots of water then I can avoid it though.

I don’t actually gain any weight (I’ve been doing WW and weighing myself more often so I know the scale isn’t going up during that time) but I can feel super bloated.

@orchidaloha: Yuck, we’re in the same boat. I imagine my period is going to start in the next couple days and it just sucks. . . ugggghhhhh. I’m so grumpy! It doesn’t help that it’s been raining in both parts of New England I live in for like the last 2 weeks. . . urgh.

@woodchuck: I know wht you mean about being hot. I get hot flashes as part of PMS and during my period. It is awful because I tend to be really cold a lot of the time during my period (I suppose because of blood loss and the pain of cramps) and then all of a sudden I will be SWELTERING and really agitated. It’s so gross, and the fact that I get hot flashes during my period now makes me expect that I will have miserable ones during menopause. Eeew.

I’m also barely 5’1 and I know that feeling of a couple lbs of monthly weight gain… Of course it has to be all in my stomach, and during a time when my emotions are already a roller-coaster. I have a couple pairs of pants that are a little bigger in the waist, so I wear those to work, and then as soon as I get home it’s all about the sweatpants.
I also crave salt hardcore when I’m already bloated, and I know it doesn’t help! I try to drink water, coffee, and cranberry juice as much as possible and avoid soda since I don’t want to make it worse.

I totally sympathise with you ladies, I’m so bloated and feeling so fat. The period pain horrendous, thank goodness for tramadol.

I’ve never weighed myself to see if I actually gain weight during it.. and I don’t really notice a big difference in my clothes fitting… but I do feel bloated.. fatter.. whatever you want to call it. I can definitely tell it’s different from the rest of the month.

I am in the process of trying to lose a 5-10 pounds (post honeymoon weight) and was doing well (about a pound a week) until my period hit….. now I am up three pounds……….
Can anyone recommend any food/drinks that can help with the bloat?
How many days before/during/after do you notice a weight gain…..

ugh, bloating is the bane of my existance. FI knows when im getting my period because he can see the bloat show up. Its like night and day my body before the bloat and after the bloat. I tend to wear lots of dresses when I have my period since pants seem to just sit uncomfortably on my bloated belly.
