There have been a few posts today regarding Bees who don't want to wear their e-ring or wedding bands in the pool, on the beach, or on vacation...
For me, I was SO nervous about my rings on our honeymoon, particularly when I was in the ocean - I kept double/triple checking that my rings were still there and contained all of the stones!
So today, as a result of reading through all of these boards, I stumbled upon a website www.inspiredsilver.com, where I found a set that looked pretty close to my real set - I figure that I won't worry as much about the "stunt double" set on vacation and at the beach since it costs less than $40 including shipping! Not bad for something I'll probably wear once or twice per year and will give me some measure of peace of mind!
And then when my ring needs repairs, cleaning or sizing, I have something to wear and not feel nekkid!
Here's what I found, compared to my real set:
On some of the other threads, people mentioned that they were nervous about getting mugged for their real rings, and that's why they'd get a more understated "stunt double" - thoughts?
i personally wouldn't get one, only because it's not my style, lol. if i'm doing something where i fear my ring will get damaged, i usually just take it off, and then put it back on afterward. it never occurred to me to get a "double" for it. but that's just me. if you like the idea, you should totally go for it!
I had a plain white gold band I wore during my first marraige when I was working (as a pastry chef) or out and about to and from work or the beach (I was living in Miami).
I won't bother with this set... I'm very mindful of my jewelry and always take it off and put it in a safe place when something comes up.
I used to check my earring backs on my diamond studs constantly... and the day I went for my last dress fitting I wasn't paying much attention and totally lost one that day. Bummer.
I guess I've never been fearful of getting mugged for my ring, but for me it's definitely the potential loss of either a stone or the ring factor. It never really occurred to me to get a "double" until I started reading some of these threads!
If I were to go somewhere that is known for mugging of tourists, then I wouldn't even wear a stunt double because it still targets you. I've lost necklaces and thumb rings in the ocean, so I will be leaving my ering at home.
@thewheelsonthebus - I am usually really good about taking my jewelry off when I'm home (getting better about it) and going in the pool or hot tub, staining our fence, things like that - but I definitely would still be nervous about my rings in the giant waves when we go back to Mexico - when we were there on our honeymoon, I swam with my left fist clenched so the ring couldn't slide off, but even then, worried about loosening the stones in the crashing waves!
@MissTattoo - agreed - if I were going somewhere where I felt unsafe, or targeted for mugging, I wouldn't bother wearing a duplicate, though an understated band could at least keep the creepy guys at the bar away ;)
@7SEVENJ9: lol you would think! I think I've gotten hit on MORE since I've gotten engaged!
I don't have a stunt double ring, but I do have several right hand rings. My latest I bought for myself after finishing my teacher training. It's cubic zirconia but it will fit on my left hand. I've worn it once on my left hand while on a night out. Other than that, I wear my regular engagement ring.
B and C. As I mentioned in the other thread, my baby got super scratched up on a camping trip/multiple fishing trips. I wore it since I wanted to see it in photos. So that, plus the fact that I have to send it away for plating, cleaning and that is 7-10 days, I can't stand to be without it.
My ring:
Sterling silver and white saphire "fill in ring"

i have a stunt double ring. its a titanium ring. since we go fishing and to the lake and are working on cars a lot i know i will feel better if i lose my $30 craigslist band than my $500 wedding set!
@AnnieAAA, my ring set is insured, but the sentimental part of me wants to do anything I can to make sure I don't have to replace the set that my hunny proposed/married me with! So for me, if I lose the $35.11 set from InspiredSilver, I won't be heartbroken, but if I lost the real thing, even if I got the same set as a replacement through our insurance, I would be devastated.
I felt it was innappropriate for me to wear my ring in Guatemala where it's worth is more than the annual income of most citizens. Also, we were travelling a bit so it made sense to not bring unnessicary attention to my group as we were trying to blend in (as much as a dozen gringos can in a town of Mayans) so I wore a plain titanium band.
@Knubbsy-Wubbsy - where in Guatemala did you go? That's one of our "must-visit" destinations... Hubs and I are making a list :)
I just wouldn't wear it if there was a situation were i was afraid of theft or loss.

It's from a Canadian chain, Peoples. I like the fact that it's sapphire too. Kinda neat and it's $70.00
@Oneeleven - great deal! I found their site, checking out what other gemstone rings they have! :)
@7SEVENJ9: I just got back yesterday so I'm a bit... bitter right now as my system is a mess. We went to do research but for tourism:
Antigua (worthwhile, especially if you want to do language school, decent resturants, shopping is good but you can't bargain that much)
Momostenango (we lived there, it's in the highlands and not worth a visit unless you know someone there, nothing as far as shopping or food beyond barebones comida tipicos)
Chichicastenango (worthwhile for the market on Wednesday or Sundays, you can really bargain, not much else to do without driving to Ututlan to see the ruins)
Panajachel (kind of hippy-esque, variety of resturants, alright shopping but there's an international supermarket there that was a God-send after a couple weeks of Momos)
Xelaju/Quetzletenango (we were only in Zone 1 but there are some resturants and shopping, just not on Mondays)
We also travelled around Lake Atilan using Pana as a base for a day
When I first got engaged, a coworker of mine was complimenting my ring and told me to get a 'perfect fake' so I could bring it with me on vacation, etc. I appreciated the advice, but honestly I don't think my ring would look at all good as a fake since it's all diamond. Every jeweler I've spoken to advises me against it since the large cubic's get cloudy really easily and even the best ones just look silly after you wear it for like an hour.
I took the opposite approach. I decided I didn't want to wear a ring that would make me nervous about theft/loss/damage. We skipped engagement rings, and have plain gold bands for our wedding rings.
@2dbride - another great idea! I've known people who only wear their bands when on vacation, rather than worry about the e-ring, but since I got mine soldered together, that's not an option for me!
I Wouldnt get a stunt double ring. I just wouldnt wear my ring if I thought it would get damaged some how.
my stunt ring is to wear when my real ring is at the jeweler. I thought I would wear it on vacation, but as other posters have said, it still attracts attention. so maybe I won't after all!
I have a plain steel band for camping or other "rough" outings.
if I'm going to do some hard work around the house, I wear no rings at all.
Ahh, yes. :) Well like I said before, my "stunt double" ring is for work. Not only do I work in a hospital (i.e. wearing latex gloves, taking them on and off) but I also work in the city of Atlanta...at the only Level 1 Trauma hospital in the state. Lol. My stunt double isn't JUST for fear of theft (though is has crossed my mind) but more because I don't want it to get damaged being knocked around while I'm working.
Since I am getting a "stunt double" anyways, and will therefore use it when we go to the beach or whatever, because why not? I don't want to have to worry about it. For those that are like "just get it insured" I don't think that's the problem. I risk damaging mine 5 days a week...not exactly my idea of anxiety-free. Lol.
ETA: It's not going to be a real stunt double, it'll just be a plain cheap band.
Um, all of the above? Losing stones, theft (a big fear of mine) and just plain old clumsiness would keep me from wearing my ring set in certain situations yes...I would replace it with a plain band though.
I wouldn't ever get a stunt double. If your ring is sized properly, it isn't going to come off. And if something does happen, that is what insurance is for.
Honestly, I find it a little silly to own nice jewelery if you are just going to wear a $40 fake set instead.
@FutureKMM - for me, I'll be wearing my nice, real set 99% of the time. The $40 cheap set is for that 1% of the time that I'll worry about damage/theft/loss (we don't go on vacation much, and most vacations arent' to the beach where I'd be nervous about it!).
OK so I love that I got my ring from Zales. They have this lifetime insurance on the ring so if I ever lose a stone, stratch, or even if the ring gets stolen they will replace it for free! I have no fears about wearing my ring when there is so much insurance on it. It definitly gives me peice of mind knowing that all the money we spent on the ring wont just go up in smoke!
My wedding band is just a plain white gold band so that I can just wear that alone when I go sailing and other things that I don't want to risk my ering.
I have a CZ stunt double, that is very much like my actual e-ring, except the side stones are white/clear. The shameful part? I bought it before we were engaged, as a not-so-subtle hint of "this is what I like, darling." And if you've read the story about the birthday right hand ring I bought days before he proposed...subtlety is not my strong suit.
Actual e-ring...

And stunt double...
ETA: I wore it on occasion in between FI proposing and my actual e-ring coming in (he proposed with my wedding band while e-ring was still being made). Haven't worn it since. As my wedding band is a plain white gold band, I'll just wear my wedding band only in situations that call for less/no bling.
I have a stunt ring that is a simple cz eternity band. I wore it when I went to Mexico. I've heard stories about bees losing their ring in the ocean and that scared me. Also, I wouldn't want to be targeted because of my ring. Lastly, I'm a bargain hunter so I hear that people will look at your jewelry when haggling. Plus, I felt so much better that my ring was at home and it was safe in it's jewelry box during my honeymoon.
My eternity band cost me $15 on overstock.com.
Oh, I know my insurance covers my ring in case of theft but I would be devastated if I lost it. It means a lot to me. I guess for me, I would rather be better safe than sorry.
I totally want a stunt double ring, and have thought about it myself, but don't know where I can find an affordable one in Canada. I definitely don't want to take my e-ring on vacations, but my finger will feel so naked without it :(
I never bought a stunt ring. But I do have a CZ solitaire on a yellow gold band that my husband got me back when we was engaged for a anniversary. Since then he has gotten me a nicer right hand ring. So I never wear the CZ one anymore. Thus it was being neglected, so now I wear it to the gym! So I don't bend or scratch my e-ring & wedding band (white gold.) I just wear it by its self to the gym since I feel naked without wearing a ring at all.
My wedding set:

& A ring that looks like my "gym" ring, only mine has 4 prongs instead of 6:
