As a former server, I always really feel for servers when I am at a restaurant and try to be as friendly and polite as possible. I never ever want to be the “bad” table if that makes sense. 😛

Anyway, my needs are pretty simple and similar to the original poster up above. I like to be greeted either right away or a few minutes after being seated (I’ve been to a few restaurants where our table is ignored…we actually walked out of one once where we sat for around 20 minutes without anyone coming up and asking for a drink order/saying anthing to us). I try to be polite to everyone and always hope that a server will be polite as well. Finally, I’d like to receive my order in a somewhat timely manner based off of where we are/how busy they are. Pretty simple altogether, I think! 🙂

Server is polite and has a smile on his/her face

Service is in a timely manner

Attentive but not overly so

Doesn’t bring the check with the entrees

I’m pretty easy to please, I think.

I often go to fancy happy hours with friends and it drives me crazy when I can’t get a drink order in and then it takes 30 minutes to come. Other than that, I’m not very picky. It’s just a pet peeve and it seems to happen at every bar. I mean I think if I have to pay $15 for my martini, it should come quickly!

Honestly as long as the server is friendly and polite I’m willing to forgive just about anything else.

They are nice.

They refill our drinks when needed/don’t ignore our table.

That is pretty much it. 🙂

As a former server myself, I believe servers should always act like they are getting and deserve an excellent tip, whether that’s the reality or not. A good server is above the nonsense of rude customers and will be polite back. A good server does everything he.she can to deliver the right food quickly and to fix any mistakes, but customers should not hold the server responsible for kitchen errors as long as the server is willing to address the situation. A server should be attentive, but not onery.

Pretty much what everyone else has said. One thing that always really bothers me though, is if I ask for more water at the start of my meal, and I’m done eating before it ever arrives. It also makes me mad if I order something that needs ketchup (burger or onion rings) and I have to ask multiple times for the ketchup. I also expect that if someone has food allergies, they are not rude if the person askes if the meal contains whatever they’re allergic too. Future Sister-In-Law is afraid to even ask most of the time about ingredients because some servers have been so rude to her.

Once we set our menu down, you better be there. don’t make us wait for half an hour! We’re hungry already, that’s why we are there in the first place. Pay attention, we are your bread and butter.

-a waiter/waitress that doesn’t seem pissed off to be doing their job

-making sure what i ordered is what they serve me (i get they are at the mercy of the kitchen, so if it’s wrong, don’t make a fuss to get it right)

-checking in to see if I need anything at some point

-bringing the bill shortly after plates are cleared

-NOT trying to upsell the heck out of things

1. No hair in my food (it happens, it makes me sad, and naucous

2. pls come by and check in on us. Fi and I have been to alot of restaurants and this gets missed alot. Worse thing was when we were in an Indian restaurant and he had hot food and instead of just giving us a jug of water he just kept giving him a glass. Fi definitely won brownie points for that though cus his taste buds are made of steel now

3. Please dont forget about us- it never ceases to amaze me how often this actually happens.. and when it happens ( before we even order!).

Ugh, I hated having  to do this when I was a server. Give them a break when they do this; sometimes it’s required, and we never know when a manager will come around the corner or a guest is a secret shopper and we can lose our job over not suggestive selling whatever the target items are at the time.

Great Service at a restaurant means to me that the waiter/waitress is friendly, attentive but not annoying, quick, and actually gets me what I asked for the first time.
