As a spinoff from this post I thought it would be interesting to know what people are most afraid of!
For me, it's tornadoes. They terrify me! They come out of nowhere, move so quickly and do so much destruction.
What about you, and why?
I'm with you .. Tornado's ... we've had some teeny tiny ones, nothing like the midwest, and the destruction they caused is amazingly terrifying. I've been thru blizzards and hurricanes but the tornado's scare the crap out of me.
Tsunami's - They leave such widespread devastation/disease and when the surge goes out so many people think it is safe and venture out to the beach and WHAM! get swept away.
I am weird and LOVE tornadoes. They are awe inspiring. I hate for people to lose everything or die but in unpopulated areas they are amazing.
Tornados.
Storms scare me to begin with, and tornados are real fear here in the midwest!
I would say tornados for the same reason! They are sooo fast and come out of no where. As for blizzard, being from WI I'm sort of used to them, and actually I get excited when I'm in a blizzard :-) weird....I know!
@MsBrewer: not weird! I get excited too! When we had the blizzard in 2010 it was so much fun!
Depends where I am. I am an easterner living in California and while I am totally fine with earthquakes out west, they terrify me back east. The buildings there just aren't made for it.
Tornados terrify me anywhere, probably because I've never lived through one.
@MsBrewer: I love blizzards!!! February 2010 was awesome. Two 25" blizzards in one week here in PA. It was awesome. :)
Tsunamis for me. I agree with the PP that they leave such widespread destruction and disease.
I actually find tornados to be really neat (obviously I hate to see people killed by them or lose their homes though). I just find them kind of majestic with all of their power. Tornado watches don't even phase me.
Tornados!
They typically aren't very large in Florida, but they always hit at like 2 am. I love storms, but something about one popping up in the middle of the night gives me the willies.
I love hurricanes...something about being able to watch the wind like that.
For me personally, based on where I live, I voted for wild fires. I know that seems strange, but I grew up in the country and every summer there were grassfires and at least twice that I remember, they came frighteningly close to our house. Fire scares the crap out me, my biggest fear is losing my house to a fire.
However, I am convinced we are due for a big earthquake in Northern CA and that scares me. I try not to think about it and just be prepared for if/when it happens.
Almost all of them! But especially earthquakes, tsunamis and tornados.
I've been through some pretty big blizzards, those don't scare me. You pretty much know they are coming -- the others give no warning.
Totally terrified of tornadoes, too powerful adn out of our control-short notice
I love blizzards :)
living in the NE I just got a taste of what earthquake is like and didn't enjoy it xD I find that scariest because it seems harder to escape it.
Well the only one I haven't endured personally (in a scary destructive fashion) is the tsunami. But I'm actually most scared of fires. They change direction and hot embers can fly for miles and spark up a new hotspot. We were evacuated for wildfires four years ago, and it was pretty scary. There was ash everywhere, covering everything. The air was thick with smoke and there wasn't much sunlight. It was like a foggy day, but it was ash. We had to wear masks to breathe. And it was difficult to find an escape route. Scariest event EVER. The rest, meh. They didn't scare me as much.
A potential of:
Blizzards/ Ice storms...
It's terrifying being stuck in your home with no electricity in the freezing cold.
Tornado or earthquake. Both for the same reason. You have limited to no warning that these things are coming at you. Hurricane...we know for a while there's one in the vicinity and the projected path, you can get out of the way. You are warned.
Flash floods might be a little scary with all that water coming at you, but tornados can do so much damage in so little time!
I just "survived" my first earthquake yesterday (I'm in DC). It was a bit scary as we had no idea what was going on or what to do...everything just started shaking! We jumped in a doorframe and after about a minute everything subsided, but it was just so weird! (Sorry west coasters, it was my first and we are not used to those!)
My house is right on the water and we were recently hit by a hurricaine. . . so I still have a fear of them.
@jenewitt: Thats's my other worst fear. Flash flooding (terrifying if your in a car! I've been caught off guard in a flash flood... I almost lost my car)
I chose tornadoes, because they seem the least avoidable. Flash floods are scary, but I can't imagine there being one where I live or work (both at 2 of the highest points in our county).
@Jaynee:I agree with you about being scared that we're due for a big earthquake...it's terrifying!!
Tsunamis. I've experienced many earthquakes and though I'm afraid of a giant one tsunamis just seem so much more brutal and scary.
I'm not a huge fan of blizzards.
I voted earthquake because of the huge one that's predicted to either destroy St. Louis or Memphis. My entire family (minus my SO) is in St. Louis, so for it to get destroyed, I don't like it. However, earthquakes are kind of awesome when they are happening.
Flash floods to me are more inconvenient than scary. Like "Hey the house is filling with water!" "Oh crap, grab the boogie bags and let's go!"
@MissPumpkinPie: so I'm supposed to be going to a bachelorette party in AC this weekend. I am somewhat terrified of going because of the hurricane potential. I know it's supposed to be a very mild category once it reaches NJ, but still, I'm not looking forward to it to say the least!
It's interesting that Tornados are considered the scariest natural disaster when at least those can be predicted, to a degree. I mean, it might veer off course or whatever. But a general warning is issued and you can go underground or make whatever preparations you need.
An earthquake comes out of nowhere-literally. It's way scarier to be completely caught off guard like that. Okay, that's my opinion:)
@PutABirdOnIt: Meterologists can only predict the possibility of a tornado which ends up being often so some people get really relaxed about it when tornado watches and warnings come on for days. Sirens only do some much and if you live out the country/rural like much of the midwest, you don't hear them at all. Weather radios help though. Living in the midwest and the potential of tornadoes from Sping through Fall is a huge time period. You can't outrun tornadoes when they touchdown. Even getting underground doesn't prevent the possibility of death since tornadoes vary a bit in severity. This spring our weather was particularly bad, we had two tornadoes touch down in my county, not to mention the others in the rest of the state. The sirens went off three times in less than 24 hours which is a little nervewracking b/c you don't know if you'll be in your car when one touches down or out shopping where there isn't a basement.
However, if I lived on the West Coast I'd be pretty nervous about Earthquakes, especially around San Francisco--ugh, landslides and building collapsing is terrible. I read somewhere that there's a "Big One" overdue.
Living in Tuscaloosa, AL, it is most Definitely tornadoes for me! Lucky the recent tornadoes did not affect me, but so many people I know had major damages to thier homes, and there is very little warning from these storms!
@PitBulLover: Well, I keep hearing different things regarding which category it'll be. Granted if it's a 2 or 3, it's still going to do some damage. I'd definitely be careful and stay in hotels if possible. Long Beach Island (not too far from) is being evacuated. No matter what category it will be, it will be washed away.
@beekiss: That's true-I do realize they can be unpredictable and do a lot of damage in a short time. Plus, they happen every year. So, I can see the terror for sure. I guess I feel that if I had some warning, I would feel like I had a bit of control. I could at least try to prepare for a just in case scenario.
With an earthquake, there is no warning and no control. You could be in an elevator, a parking garage, an underpass of a freeway, with tons of concrete over your head wondering when the last bridge inspection was. Once I was standing in front of my college library waiting for it to open for a geology mid-term (oh, the irony:) and the entire front is made of glass-four stories high.
There was a bunch of us just waiting for the doors to open when that glass started to vibrate from a huge earthquake, we all just looked at each other and RAN like rabbits. It didn't break, but the idea that it could have was bad enough. A few years later half the campus was destroyed by the Northridge quake but it happened at 4:30 in the morning. So, there you go:)
@PitBulLover: I'm sorry! :( It's ruined my plans as well. I am going to be stuck in the house and hope to god we don't get flooded in. Basically, I'd keep your ears open more Thursday night if anything. I think they're jumping the gun a bit with the emergencies and evacuation. If you'd like, I'll keep you updated. Not sure where you're from.
Right now it's wildfires. We're in an awful drought and fires keep springing out. Just recently several acres and a few buildings burnt down, only a mile away from us. I'm terrified that something will happen to my house, horse and dog if a fire started near us. So scary.
Tsumani and Tornados! I have nightmares about botrh of them pretty frequently. Growing up I had tornado nightmares at least weekly...I was pretty convenienced I was going to die in a tornado. It still freaks me out....
@MissPumpkinPie: yeah, im trying to contact the other girls to see if we could maybe do a last minute change of plans! I think we have 24 hrs to cancel the hotel reservations. Anyways, I would love if you could keep me updated if you hear anything more. I've been looking online a lot, but I'm sure being more local you get more info. I live in Northern VA so we are just supposed to get rain all weekend from the hurricane.
