So, what was your favorite book that you read as a child (preschool/school age)?
My most favorite is Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZD1dbwdP0w&feature=related
I love this story because it's about a very odd bird who does not fit in with the other penguins. However, his oddities save the day! It teaches that it's alright, even good, to be different/unique/special!

Grover was always my Dad's favorite Sesame Street character. He used to do the voice and everything. I'm *much* older now, but whenever someone's going somewhere, we talk about "Grover packing his overnight bag". :)
@FlutterbyBee: I've never read that one. Is it a rhyming book, based on the title?
P.S. Can someone move to the Lounge, please?!
Does Little Women count?
Oh! Little House on the Prairie! I loved those books :)
@melisslp: It's more about the anxieties of a child going on their first sleepover at a friend's house. Grover is going to a sleepover at Betty Lou's house, and he wants to pack *everything* in his overnight bag - his goldfish, his cereal and bowl, his begonia, etc. His Mom keeps reassuring him that he'll be fine, and doesn't need to take it all with him. LOVE it!
I LOVED the Amelia Bedelia and Berenstain Bears series.
ETA: When I got a little older, it was all about Sweet Valley High.
I had three that I had to have read to me all the time. The Fox and the Hound, Green Eggs and Ham (which I can still recite most of :)) and There is a Monster at the end of this book!
@FlutterbyBee: Awww...super cute!
@hisgoosiegirl: I just love Little House! Brings back many memories!
@maudemaisha: Great choice!
My brother and I LOVED Jelly Belly by Dennis Lee. I think it was probably the voices my parents used to read the poems to us, but it was our first pick for bedtime reading everytime. I made a point of making sure that my nephew had his own copy when he was born!

@Eva Peron: I vaguely remember Chicka Chicka Boom Boom from "Reading Rainbow"!
I love the classics...
The Little House

Ferdinand

Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel

Oh wait and the very best of all...

@FlutterbyBee: I loved that one too!!
@Diet Coke:Also a huge fan of Amelia Bedelia!!
My favorite growing up was The Purple Coat- a story about a little girl who always got a navy coat, but one year wanted a purple coat. I won't ruin the ending for you!

I also loved

and

And currently my favorite children's books (as an adult/teacher) are the Pigeon books by Mo Willems.
The Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton (and any sequel books). Just pure fantastic fantasy!
@Diet Coke: Great choices! Gotta love Amelia Bedelia and the Berenstein Bears. I have a few of their books on CD that I still enjoy watching at age 40!
@furtureffcaptwife: Gotta love Dr. Seuss!
@Eva Peron: Excellent choices!
@Shosha1: I don't think I've ever read that book. I need to see if they have it at our school's library!
@mink: Me too!!!!
Iloved Ferdinand! I loved the Jolly Postman... I still have it.. And still think its cute.. There are many other books that I loved also.

I get to read a LOT of kid books since I work with kindergarteners. I love it.
Some of my favorites growing up (among others that have already been mentioned!!)

I'm loving this thread! Although I've read many of them, there are quite a few I'm not familiar with. I've got to check them out soon!!! (I love children's literature, as I work in an elementary school).
@maudemaisha: This is one of my favorite books from my childhood. In fact, I have the whole Munsch collection. My Dad gave me a new copy of Love You Forever when I graduated from University. :)
@Showers: I loved Enid Blyton when I was a kid! I especially liked the Five Find-Outers books and the Adventure Series books.
Here are some of my favourites from when I was young:

@thisismeAXiD: I've never heard of My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes, but I love the name!
Corduroy and Bearstein Bears (: I also loved the Princess and the Pea! There are other lesser known books but I don't remember the titles completely :( I'll have to look at them when I go home sometime haha
@mink: Yes to all these. My daughter is obsessed with Make Way for Ducklings. I remember the day we were bringing her in for her autism evaluation in Boston, everyone was so stressed out before the appointment. We had about 30 minutes to kill and I was like "Let's go see the ducks." She LOVED seeing them "for real" lol. It was a nice thing to do that definitely eased some of the tension we were all feeling.

@Blueknightess: How sweet !! :) I am hoping to read the book and sing that song to my future kids :)
@ruby26: I had completely forgotten about Sylvester and the Magic Pebble! One of my favorites! The Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle Treasury was awesome, too. I read that one so many times!
I loved The Westing Game and Peter Pan. And Walk Two Moons -- that was a great book.
@Lemma: Neither had I until Mr.TKE and I were talking about it one day...I guess we both had obsecure choices in faves :)
