To answer the question iin your title, I don't enjoy it, but I do it for the sake of the relationship.
I'll go ahead and post a pic of a dress that I wasn't crazy about initially, but it actually turned out pretty nice and the color made for really cool shots from the photographer:

I wasn't a fan at first because we ordered them off of a website that was a little sketchy IMO, and also it cost me $70 in alterations, so I was pretty witchy about it up until seeing us all getting ready.
As long as it isn't totally unflattering to the point of humility! My friend had to wear a tank- like a cami that was too small! She got her a size that was too tight, and it was just that with a puffy bright skirt. The bride had it out for her! :)
@julies1949: that is how I feel, too.... I just kind of have that "27 Dresses" mentality of we can make it as fun/miserable as we want...
I have been in 4 weddings recently, and I can honestly say that while I wouldn't have picked them for myself, I actually *kind of* started looking forward to wearing them because I knew how much it meant to the bride!
@cbee: yeah.... that would be terrible :(
Nothing makes you feel worse than when something just does not fit properly
When it fits properly and I am comfortable, I actually kind of like it when a bride has chosen a dress that I normally wouldn't have chosen for myself.
I mean... as long and I didn't look absolutely ridiculous or like a hooker, I'd be fine with it. I know all my good friends really well and I don't think I'd get stuck wearing something awful anyway. They're all pretty fabulous ladies.
I look forward to wearing something I wouldn't normally pick out. For my friends wedding this summer I ordered a dress in DB's "begonia" which is an electric BRIGHT fushia pink. I would never wear that color, but I'm excited to wear it just to see how it looks.
@Amanda_Rae: oh my gosh I LOVE this color and you look BEAUTIFUL! Please share the website as you know I'm in the market for my BMs and this is sooo cuuuute!
As for my vote, I'm pretty adventurous so I'd be excited more than anything because YES it gives you an excuse to step out of your comfort zone and what you're wearing is really a reflection of the bride's tastes and you are a good friend for supporting/wearing it for her!
I'm in a wedding in June where our friend is making us infinity dresses in all different pinks and mine is a baby pink that I definitely would not have picked out myself but that I'm not opposed to wearing... I am the most olive/tanned skin in the party and I'm actually not sure why she chose the lightest color for me but whatever~ she's the bride and her opinion reigns supreme!
I just hope I don't look goofy in contrast to the other ladies in more muted purpley pinks...
I think dresses should be FUN because everyone knows its kind of like a red carpet scenario~ the boys don't care too much/have a lot of freedom but the girls do! ;D
@pccl: I know what color you're talking about because I seriously considered it for my girls, too!! I'm sure it will all look great when it comes together!
@KimmySumShuga: Thank you! I think she got it off of zappos.com, it was over a year ago so they may not have it anymore :(
@zippylef: yes, all of my friends are SUPER trendy and all about the latest fad! So every wedding is a new event to get creative! I try to trust their instincts as much as possible! lol
@mkathleenwhite: I'm with you on that one.... comfort!!!!!

A thread going now reminded me of something... I actually like when I wear a BM dress that isn't my personal style because it A) Gives me a chance to try something new that I wouldn't have on my own B) sets me/my friends aside as the wedding party ( silly) and C) because sometimes it is fun to know that you MAY look ridiculous in 25 years, but hey.... there are worse things in life and you're having fun!!!
