I know the feeling. I make more than my SO does also so even though my ring didn’t cost a whole lot in my opinion that’s a little different for guys. Especially the one’s that don’t splurge. My SO never gave me a budget though. I just went with the least expensive ring that I found that I loved. And he was okay with it. I plan on upgrading at about 5 years too so I was okay with going cheaper. It actually still turned out relly good because I love the ring. Just still waiting for him to propose! He’s had it for 17 days now! Ugggh! Hopefully this weekend. Our 4 year anniversary was yesterday! **fingers crossed**

And I totally agree: “The whole idea of being engaged and starting wedding planning is just starting to hit me.  Can’t wait!!”

No matter how much little you spend, unless you get it for free or close to it’s still an awful lot of money for something so tiny. I’m certain he thought it was the best use of his money or he wouldn’t have offered that amount to you, but no matter what, when a person spends a large amount of money on anything, it’s always hard not to picture what else that money could have gone toward. People do that, even when they know that the money they spent was for a much higher purpose than what they’d have spent it on otherwise (I remember the day I realized how many pairs of Manolos and Louboutins my college tuition could have purchased…). That feeling would be very much compounded by the fact that the object I’d just spent that money on is only about an inch square.

Those are just the very practical considerations. Part of his feelings might have to do with being emotional/nervous about what he’s just decided to do.

I would bet anything it wasn’t the price so much as coming to the realization that he will soon be doing one of the most important things in his life. . . proposing to you!!!

I’m sure actually putting money down makes everything seem so real for him too!

I’m so excited for you!  I think I’d be giddy for a while if I were you!!!!!  Keep us posted on any progress!  🙂

I was sticker-shocked, too, when we bought my ring. But look at it this way. Let’s say you’re wearing it for 60 years (give or take, depending on age, health, etc, of course!) and let’s assume a $5000 ring. Calculate it out: to wear that ring every day for the rest of your life, it costs about 23 cents per day. 21,900 days of happiness from a nice ring.

Right? Present it to him that way 😉

It’s honestly how SO had to present it to me so I didn’t feel guilty..

a good cure for sticker shock…take him to a very expensive jewlers, pick a random ring and tell him its the cheapest they have lol. Fiance was in shock at how much weddings cost and i made him watch platinum weddings with me lol

@Big Truck: That’s so exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You’re so close!!!! And ya, about the sticker shock… J and I went to a jewellery store and I saw a ring I liked and pointed it out. The jewellery store was very clever… They hid the price tag, which was a shocking $14,350. Not. Kidding. I was turned off immediately, lol. J nearly poo’d his pants at the price of it. He realized then that the ring I wanted really wasn’t that bad ($1400, not including the centre diamond).

My Fiance gave me a budget of 8-10K and the ring we spent about half that, significantly less than the budget, but it’s still a shock when you have to pull out the credit card.  A budget us just a number until it arrives on your credit card statement 😉
