Never been but we are looking at Sri Lanka and the Maldives for our honeymoon next year!

I’ve been doing quite a lot of research and I think we are going to do a private ’boutique’ tour through Trailfinders in the UK….that way we get to see the places we want to see but with a private driver rather than trying to do it independently.

I went to Sri Lanka 3 years ago and it was AMAZING! One of my favourite countries! The foreign office says to be aware because there was a civil war in the north that ended in 2009 and ever since people have been a little wary of going. Recently tourism there has picked up and it was very safe when we went.

As far as renting a car and driving though, I wouldn’t. They drive a little crazy, we saw elephants and cows in the road with cars trying to overtake at dangerous points and even a family of four without helmets sat on one motorcycle. We booked on a private tour and it was incredible, the driver was really safe and friendly and we got to see everything we would have wanted to see by ourselves. It was affordable as well!

We stayed in Bentota on the beach for the last 5 days in the south. We started in Polonnaruwa in the middle of the island and Dambulla, and rode elephants there, its amazing! The climbed Sigiriya Rock which is also worth it. We actually found a safari park in that area too where you can see wild elephants and monkeys and loads of other animals. Then we drove down to Kandy to see the temples and to Nuwara Eliya by the tea plantations where there is a huge elephant park. I think you can ride them and swim with them there but we didn’t have time to do that unfortunately. Overall we toured the centre of the island then returned back to Colombo and drove down to the south on the west coast! I also recommend having a look at some attractions on the south west near the coast as we found a turtle hatchery that let us hold baby turtles!

The roads could be alot better, quite a few potholes and bad drivers but otherwise fairly simple. They have alot of long windy roads that connect city to city so I don’t think you would get lost easily but I would still recommend a private driver over driving it yourself just for safety 🙂
