For the holidays, I am buying personlized welcome mats for my co-workers customized with their family names. For my American friends, it is simple–it’s their last name. However, I have a co-worker whose last name is her husband’s first name. They are from Sri Lanka. Does anyone know if they have a “family name” or how this works?

I have no idea, I would just ask her! You could just act like your curious how it works in other countries with the tradition of changing last names.

@babybee92: In Sri Lanka, the surname comes first. Most likely, their family name is the husband’s “first” name (your co-worker’s last name).
One of my close friends is Sri Lankan. If you can wait another day and remind me through PM, I can double-check with him for you.
